Pretty sure I remember reading online during the time the new artwork was showcased when the season was coming out, they made the change to be more in line with the artwork from the source material. It's why a bunch the girls mostly went from normal-ish looking people to a moe sexy anime girl artwork. Same thing more or less applying to the dudes too.
