- The make the chain driven differential, I used gears taken from the BMW e46 2.0d differential. The differential can drive vehicles such as trikes, go-karts, buggy and other vehicles that will be powered by a motorcycle engine.
guys who can build stuff like this blow my mind. I'd rather watch this than some guy chasing a ball any day.
Good, because football's not on till tomorrow, anyway.
Me to !!

Welcome to our world of engineering and innovation, sure we make it look simple by showing results and some processes in between but our minds work differently to most with knowledge of materials, machinery, and step by step processes to create items.
It's a craft we hold dear in our hearts and nothing can stop us because we fully understand that without us whom do this nothing moves forward nor gets repaired.
We're a breed of our own who thrive on reinventing the wheel 💪

I love these kinds of videos. no stupid narration, no god-awefull music, just two hands, a shit load of powertools and their (slightly and tremendously sped up) sounds. making something that i myself do not have the knowledge and skills nor the immediate use for.
👍👍
Not only gets upvote for the awesome build but also for letting us hear the sounds of the saws, grinders, arcs & whatnot without having crappy dance music or some such drowning it out.
👍
можно уменьшить площадь фланцев крепления тормозных дисков. это снизив общий вес, инерцию. балансировка корпуса лишней не будет. отличная идея и Великолепное исполнение. Мастеру Уважение
Man you are a freaking wizard! Appreciate your knowledge of tools and machines! Never think about chain driven diff!
Thank you :) But i will need this mechanism in my next project :)
👍👍👍
Cub Cadet lawn tractors used small Chrysler automotive diff assemblies for three decades. the rear axle/gear box assemblies have been a favorite transplant part for builders for a long time.

VERY IMPRESSIVE!!! That would be perfect for so many other projects!! I can't wait to see how you use it.
Thank you 😁
I will now shamelessly steal this for my next build. Thank you.
Some of those scenes remind me Iron Man when he was building his suit! Excellent work.
IMPRESSIVE! There is nothing else that needs to be said. From video idea, picture quality, sound and editing. All around one of the best video I've seen here on CZcams. Be proud my friend, your talents go far from just what you do in the garage
Thank you 😁
Oh wow that's some serious work .. you make it look so easy . I'd guess a lot of planning and thought as well as precise measurements. Can't wait to see part 2 .
Yes, the gears from BMW differentials are not a good idea to make a chain driven differential easily. I am working on a certain vehicle 😁
Классная работа! Талантливый механик!!! Респект!!!!
This is one of the best channels on CZcams. Love watching this guy make all this stuff. Every videos is interesting
Thank you 😁

Thanks for this... I'm building a very similar design of diff, but at a much smaller scale... It's for an HPV/ small EV with a power of under 2kW... My output shafts are 12mm in diameter, the outer casing is 70mm in diameter, with only 2mm wall thickness... You validated a lot of my design choices!
That was amazing to watch, a lot of thought and accurate measuring went into that one !
that looks like an ideal dif for a chain driven bike trike !
With the disc set up it looks like the jag 4.2 rear end i was using for a rover v8 trike i was building some years ago, that would have been ideal as a engineered minimised alternative as had to cut down the length of the drive shafts to fit 15" wide back wheels ;)
You sir, are a first-class engineer, there is no doubt in my mind about that. Brilliant job.
What first class engineer would choose sleeve bearings over ball bearings on an axle? Those axles will be separating from the differential case in no time, if they don't seize up first.
Мощный механизм отличный технический подход, спасибо за видео!
да, еще тут весь редуктор крутится будет... надо его еще как колесо на балансировочном станке проверять.
I really appreciate the time you put in on these videos. Thank you.
Thank you 😁
I had to watch this twice it was so amazing. It looks like your diff is leak proof so you might be able to put diff oil in it. When I did mine on my trike I had the prop shaft input flange cut into a sprocket but then I had to also use a bevel gearbox from a farm implement ( Rated 70 HP). That was ten years ago and it's still going around England somewhere.
That my friend is so cool!!!
Most of you people talking crap about this dudes work couldn't even imagine to do all the work he just did. Great video
👍
This is art! Amazing. Please keep sharing your work. 🙏🏼
👍👍👍
If i didn't just spend a whole lot of money on kart parts, trike parts, steel and then save for a couple more years, i might of had enough to make a tenth of the down payment needed to buy a lathe so i can build a differential. Thanks guy, i truly feel inspired 😅
I’ve been thinking of making this exact design for ages! Just went live axle for the buggy instead. LSD or locker would be so cool to have
This is art! Amazing. Please keep sharing your work.
Love it !🥰Especially the inboard brakes ! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Very nice job!
Well made and compact size!
Great work, i was at the scrap yard one time and saw a ball differential, it was lawn tractor size, should have bought it.
Also visit my channel, friends, there are interesting things to watch
Thank you 😁 Yes, in some lawn mower tractors there is a differential which is driven by a chain with a separately attached gearbox, my neighbor has one and he changed the seals in it and I saw what was inside and it seems to me that quite a lot of power can be picked up this differential :) But it is difficult to find such a mechanism that you can buy it in a few models of tractors, it was mounted, So if you come across such a mechanism again, I recommend you buy it as it probably wouldn't cost much:)

I just need this for my project! when i get money later. I will be in need of your amazing skills
With great interest I saw your design of a chain-driven differential. You did a lot of technical operations to make the vision of this device come true, congratulations 👌.
Thank you 😁
I started watching this to get an idea how to build one myself since I wanted to build something that requires one for couple of years now, I think it might take some years still to be able to build one like this. Impressive! Good job! Maybe one day I'll use this video to actually build one.
You don't need to do anything this complex mate. You can use the original diff housing, and make plates to fill in the holes, and save all the machining. I've got 3 i use on my race car.
This was a beautiful project. I do not know its intended use, but watch out for internal pressure from heat blowing out your seals. Most diffs have a pressure releasing vent for this reason. It lets the pressure out when it gets hot, and it prevent a vacuum when it is cooling.
How is the vacuum in a differential bad? I would like to know, thanks in advance.
@@zefror_7078 It can suck dirt and grit past your seals.
@@zefror_7078 can also suck in water and mud . Both cool down your axles creating a vacuum if your deep enough and don't have a vent.
He could just use heavy grease instead of differential oil/lubricant. He wouldn't have to worry as much about heat unless he planned on driving something fast. Or he could use bentonite grease. That stuff never seems to heat up. It's found in ride on mower transmissions in case anyone's wondering.
@@TheCommo81 It is not the oil or grease heating up that will cause the problem. It is the AIR inside. It expands and contracts with heat and cold, causing pressure/ vacuum as the case might be.
All differentials should have a vent !
that would make a sweet drive for a miniature tank or something similarly tracked , awesome engineering
You're a genius Sir. What an amazing work of art.👍👍👍👍
Seems this probably saved Rather B Welding some time in figuring out.

Excellant idea isn't it ? Done this on an off road buggy 20 years ago. Stupid straight axle spurred me on to design the same thing.
You do some DAMN FINE work my friend, this is AWAZING.. Thanks for the video, I loved watching it...
Very very Beautyful and interesting work.
I need one of these for a trike build I'm working on. Perfect 👌
Great skills involved in the project.
Heat should not be a problem since there is no hypoid (ring and pinion). You should consider adding a ounce or two excess CV grease. It will find its way around as the spiders and side gears rotate. Then you can rifle bore one of the side flanges to vent into the CV without worrying of cross contaminating the lubricants.
👍
My thoughts would be to use o-rings in place of the paper gaskets and run a gear oil like a 75w140 instead of a grease to extend gear life and cut down on driveline noise.
@@Ratkill9000 main thing with this, when driving straight it acts like a straight axle with no gear spin which cuts a lot of wear
Props to your skills. Thank you 🇨🇦
Outstanding mechanical engineering to say the least.

Beautiful Upload friend. keep it up. Thank you for sharing this to us. Greetings from Korea
Beautiful ! I did machining for 40 years. Only thing he should do is record sizes & make a drawing. 1978 done this way & by 2020 create a cnc programs for lathe & machining center. No disrespect meant
You're dangerneering skills are top notch.
I love your work! ,I hope to see more soon!
Really nice vid thanks for showing us! P.S. If you need a small sized, very strong diff that is REALLY light. Subaru aluminum diffs work really well too. Most boneyards have a few.

David making chain differentials since motorized vehicles first developed as horseless carriages steam electric gas they were driven differentials to a separate drivetrain
Very nice. I do see a tracked vehicle in the future.
Just a kind word of caution. I would put some gear oil in the diff. you made. The grease will sling off the gears when at high speed and have no lubrication. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you 😁 There will be no tracked vehicle, but maybe I will undertake such a project one day. I am thinking of installing a valve that would reduce the pressure and pouring oil into the mechanism
This is real professional! Very good, studied construction. Perfect realization. No unnecesarry doings - all movements aim to final effect like in master chess play :). Last not least, he doesn't afraid to touch elements without terrible lateks gloves (awful plague among so called "masters"), much better feeling of material (what I know from myself experience). Congratulations and thanks for real pleasure to watching!
It is also overkill and it adds a ton of weight to the go-kart and it will suck up some horsepower after the final weight. And it will throw off breaking. And it will throw off suspension.
And I love it and I love the overkill!!! LMAO !!!!
Привет Очень хорошая работа
Звук издаваемый редуктором при работе прям воодушевил, как у Форда Т 1905 года выпуска :-)
Awesome job! 😉
Dziękuję 😁
Piece of cake... You only need 250 thousand dollars to buy the equipment and tools and take a 6-month course to learn how to use the machinery.
A little chat explaining sizes etc would have helped.
Amazing job, but unfortunately we don't all have a well equipped workshop.
I have wanted to find a way to rig one of these up for years. My dream project in high school was to build a tracked go kart and a differential would be a necessity to drive it.
You need a little vinyl cutter to make yourself nice clean gaskets. I use a knk force and use it for all sorts of materials, it's great.
I am so glad there is no music!
Very nice work.
Great project.
Take care, EM.
Wow amazing work

the 1966 Honda S 600 had a independent chain drive rear end . My dad has one .
Great design concept, and well made. Would be a little worried by the noises!
Yes and no vent. But it will work. Could have used the oem Diff with a chain gear adaptor on the one side shaft and removed the pinion . would have been quite.
Can’t wait to see what you build with it.
👍👍👍
This is an open differential, I can appreciate all the work it took to make and engineer, but as soon as you have any loss of traction it’s going to be spinning one wheel.

Nice work, must be a good quality 3 jaw in the lathe!
You are making new device
I am very impressed
The thing that separates this differential drive from what most are typically used to seeing is that it's chain drive, not shaft. This eliminates the parts that create the most friction and heat, the hypoid gearset. Second, it also eliminates preloaded pinon and carrier bearings, which is the second most heat generating parts in a typical differential.
Unless this differential is used in a manner opposite of a typical differential, minimal heat will be generated because spider gears are not designed for high speed rotation and by nature of design do not create much heat unless high speed rotational differential speed is stained between one side and the other for longer periods of time.
An awesome chain drive combined with a terrible open diff, looks like a good work just the same.😉
Awesome build. I want to build a 4wd go-cart with less than 10hp. Eventually, just because, I might try to turn it into an EV go-cart. Instead of trying to mount 2 motors, one and chain drive F & R differentials.
2 changes I would do on your build. 1, I suspect, was just not noticed during assembly. One pillar block has grease fitting facing the opposite way. It is easier to grease if both are in the same direction. The other is I would have put a bit more grease on the inside, not packed, but a bit more.
All in all, it was a great build. Wish I had your lathe and bandsaw. 🤔
Seriously Impressive Skills 😮😮😮
Very Good parabéns gostei muito
