For those of you who are not woodturners, I'd like to point out something TRULY impressive. The tool Andy uses almost exclusively to shape the exteriors of his pieces is called a spindle or fingernail gouge. It is a great shaping tool for relatively flat surfaces but it is almost IMPOSSIBLE for mere mortals to control on any rough surface. If I ever trued to use that tool to do the things Andy routinely and skillfully uses it for (like knocking the bark off), I'd quickly end up with that thing imbedded in my ear. Andy, your skill is truly breathtaking.
What about someone with insane forearm and grip strength?
The amount of sheer control Andy has is unmatched. His hands are so steady and precise that’s what it means to be a skillful wood turner
CNC lathe's would most likely end end in disataster.
Looks like a bowl gouge, not a spindle gouge. A typical spindle gouge wouldn't hold up to the end grain turning in this video, and shouldn't be tried on end grain turning.
That said, this is a nice piece of work. Inspires me to try something different. You don't see many vases turned with end grain orientation.
@@luncans8291 im guessing you are joking. It's about technique. Strength really isn't the biggest factor. The roughing does take some, but technique / tool presentation is what really matters if someone wants to do this a lot. Once the piece is rounded it is completely about technique, the grip and strength isn't a factor to finish the outside. The tool does the work, the turner steers it in the right direction with a lot of skill. The lathe typically wins over bad technique. Grip strength and Popeye forearms will result in a destroyed piece if that is all a turner brings to the lathe. And, someone could get seriously hurt or even killed. Even the pros get killed sometimes, or has to be taken seriously.
There is so much about this project to love: turning air, the top down camera angle when you were turning the inside, the spalted figures in the beech, the shape, and the finish. Another beautifully crafted piece of art!
That part around 4:20 when it looks like he is turning thin air... Mind blown.
It’s sort of like being an alcoholic - I can’t stop watching!
In some angles it looks like a rolled up ancient map from the middle ages. Beautiful wood👍🏼👏👏🤘😷
I really appreciate that you don't do voice overs or add music to your videos; you let the work speak for itself. Thank you! your woodturning videos are my favorite to watch :)
Thanks 👍
amazing! I would never in a million years thought of mounting it that way around :) inspiring Andy.
You’re a braver man than I, Andy. There’s no way I’d turn that for fear of injuries! It’s a brilliant piece!
Good video Andy! Thanks for sharing with us!💖👌👍😎JP
Sometimes I imagine that I am learning how by watching and thinking how would I do it differently. Not because I believe I can do better but to make it unique to me. I wonder if many of the people that dislike these videos are simply jealous of the art you create? @Andy Phillip.
2:30 AM. I’m here early, beautiful work as always.
Started watching same time here to lol
Once again you start with a piece of wood that should really be split for kindling, and you finish with a beautiful vase that would take pride of place on my fireplace ! You never cease to amaze me. Thanks again👍🏼🏴
The whole Universe is spinning ! I hope our soules get a little bit more beautyfull , by each turn, like your humble Lumb of Wood .
Thanks for sharing🌞
Beautiful pieces as always! I love the swirls of the wood, and the stunning tree rings hidden amongest the swirls! Put a large choco-vanilla ice-cream on top, and voila! Tasty and wonderful art! ;)
You are by far my favorite wood Turner. What a beautiful peice of wood and gorgeous grain. I'm so in love with the shape. I can see it holding a bunch of the darkest colored roses. 🌹🌹
Fantastic vase. I really love the live edge and how that turned out. Definitely a win
I absolutely love your art. Even though I live in Denmark I must buy some of your artwork. So much love you have putted into the wood.
Gorgeous! Love how you kept the wood’s natural lines.
I just love spalted wood. It is so beautiful and the grain is always so interesting. I love this piece and know where’s the perfect place to put it if it were mine.
you made the right call for this piece of wood, it's a work of art
No words, simply perfect, you have such an amazing vision for pieces, so beautiful.
Very nice! Love spalted wood as well. And it's nice to see I am not the only one who turns with gloves on.
i would love to see some chess caracters made out of stumps and epoxy resin in black and white/silver :D
Mesmerising to watch you create this stunning art piece, truly beautiful
Dang, who would’ve thought an old chunk of wood would turn into art!? I am so impressed!
Hi Andy. Starting with your channel, I have a serious appreciation for "wood" Moving towards the guys who mill their own wood on saw mills. It is a beautiful medium. And I find it meditative to watch you and the others "work wood" to its either milled on a lathe, or milled raw on a mill. Fall Line Ridge and Southern Indiana Saw Mill. My top three wood workers. Another beautiful piece Andy. Hope you and yours are safe and well.
I learned what "spalted" is today. Thank you for showing us this beautiful wood and what your amazing talents can create with it. :)
You're insane! When you started hollowing that out it was like the tensest moment of my life. I was expecting a disaster at any second.
Wow Andy, this vase looks so beautiful, don’t ask my why, but to me it looks like it has been made using an old wooden globe. It truly is a beautiful piece xxx
I am always impressed with how far he puts the chisel away from the rest without it catching. Masterful work as always.
Hi I from 🇨🇦. What an AMAZING piece you created . It’s amazing how you see what’s inside that fire wood log and bring it to life. A wonderful gift you have been given.
Such spectacular beauty, from such an often discarded hunk of wood. You are a master, Andy. Magnificent.
andy i truly love all the work you’ve done it’s beautiful.
Best vase I've ever seen. Ever.
Beautiful work like usual. Thank you for sharing with us.
Watching the cutter cleave its way along the groove, into seemingly empty air space, yet yielding wood chips aplenty, always fascinates me.
Positioning really made the spalting stand out, nice work 👍
I see for the first time this channel, I am upset by your extraordinary ability to model a simple piece of wood and make it a work of art. The lamp with blue plastic resin is a real masterpiece. Congratulations, I would have already gone crazy just for the patience that needs a job like yours. 👍🍀
Nice looking piece. You've inspired me to try something new and turn an end grain vase.
Superlative design! I’d never have thought of that!!
Oh, you make it look so easy. I love your work!
An excellent work of art! Thanks for sharing..
That looked like a really rough one to get started. Awesome creation!
A very nice piece. Love the live edge with the bark.
You are definitely the best I’ve ever seen.
Wow!!! Just wow. Very nice work.
Its pattern and color is artistic and beautiful. The shape is unique and ingenious, great job.
I like all of your turnings and your videos are great. But THAT is a fantastic vessel. Wow! And you are a very fortunate man to have that inventory of splayed beech. Thanks for all the great videos.
In a hundred years one of your pieces will be on a future version of Antiques Roadshow and spoke about with great reverence. Beautiful work.
Beautiful Piece, thanks for sharing
I am on awe of this piece!!😍
Awesome job. First saw lump of wood then saw a beautiful piece of well done artwork.
Andy what an awesome and stunningly beautiful magnificent and spectacular vase. The dpalted wood and the grain is fantastic with the rough edge. Fantastic.

Very nicely done, Andy. Turned bottom and maker coin a nice touch. The Hope hollowed looks great - very stable. The finished piece reminded me of a high end gelato cone. Beautiful!

Naturally beautifully elegant!!
Awesome. It is simply amazing to watch you stick a chisel inside, what to the camera looks invisible and turn the inside of that vase! Another work from the master!

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing your amazing work.
Very interesting grain, but the beauty that you brought out of this chunk of wood is truly wonderful.
Your videos are making the lockdown a bit more bearable, your pieces are beautiful.
1st thing I'm doing when we come out of lockdown and you reopen your online store is buying a piece, hopefully this one if it's still available, my coming out of lockdown treat.
