One thing I never see people talk about with the characters is that Toad/Koopa can often take corners at full speed without needing to drift, and without spinning out.
If you let go of the accelerator right before the start of the turn, then begin turning, and then hold the acceleration, they'll power through the turn at full speed without sliding/spinning/drifting. Combined with their tighter turning radius, you're often able to hug the inside corners of the track and end up finishing corners faster (overall) than other characters who drift through the corners on a wider angle.
With this you can pretty easily take 1st place in every 150cc course even though their top speed isn't great.

This poster knows what’s up! As a long term Toad user I agree that Toad/Koopa tight corners and understanding of the kart is a great way to beat out 150cc. To this day I still use Toad and in most cases knock out almost everyone I play. Yes every race is different and there are people out there that can beat me (not full of myself here) but long days and time trial racing on the original Mario kart setup my future lol. My family hates this version of Mario kart… they don’t understand why I love this hard for most game. Lol

I always play Koopa, I never really do this though, I always powers like but a few times I found out that if you can hold the gas down the whole time, never letting go and powersliding through the corners, if you never bump into anything eventually your kart will go into overdrive and speed up and it sounds different, it's like a boosted top speed... I could only ever pull it off in browsers castle though...

    @davidklein8608 Před rokem +88

Koopa Troopa and Toad are a lot better than you give them credit for. Having tight controls means you're not sliding all over the place like and can stay on the inside line and hit the zippers. Another thing they are great for is being able to drop items with precision. The computer players always follow the same path so you can strategically drop shells and banana peels to make them fall off the tracks and really set them back.

    @Don-yf6yo Před rokem +11

I remember playing this game on the SNES and only discovered a few of the shortcuts and tricks discussed in this video. I was surprised to learn of how many more there are! I did come up with a strategy when playing the computer gives you some breathing room. When you come in first place in each race, you'll notice that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place cars are the same for each race. After the first race of each circuit you'll discover who that is so you strategically take him out in one of he later races. For example, in the 5th lap I get a red shell or star man, I would take out that racer near the finish line which means he would not even place. So this racer does not end up getting the 6 points for coming 2nd. So now that gives you an even bigger point lead at whoever is now the new #2. So in the later races in the circuit, if you come in 2nd or 3rd, you'll still have a good chance of winning the trophy for the entire circuit.

The guide omitted the very useful counter-steering technique. This one can help you regain traction much faster after drifting, especially with the worse handling characters on slippery surfaces.
This technique works by briefly drifting the opposite way of the preceding drift line, so you can attenuate the kart's momentum much faster. Then, release the powerslide button once you reached the desired momentum.
The same can be done without drifting, although its effect is lessened.
Master this, and you might never need to let go of the acceleration button outside of certain shortcuts. This is vital along with using DK Jr. and Bowser for achieving world records in Time Trials. It also helps you a lot on winning against CPU racers, especially since you'll be more easily staying on track and end up being far ahead of the pack.

If you got to play mario kart DS then played some mario kart N64 you will see how sloppy the controls are on the N64 title. I think the multiplayer aspect clouded our minds back then. I didn't even realize that the turbo boost mini was first used in the N64 game. If you read up on the IGN N64 mario kart review the 6 out of 10 I believe was given to the game due to the sloppy controls. I owned mario kart for the N64 in 1998 when it costed 300 CAD just for the N64 system. Man in the mid 90s it was great
for our collage funds since it was in US mutual funds but man did it suck donkey with the conversion ratio in the mid 90s. In 1998 just as I had saved up the money for the N64 I got a flyer route that paid about 35 to 45 dollars CAD a month and man it was 80 CAD for OOT.

As the discoverer of several shortcuts back in the 90s, here are a few to add:
    1. In CI1 (Choco Island 1) you can feather jump to the right of the finish line to skip a lap, similar to ones you've shown.
    2. KB1 (Koopa Beach 1) showcases one of my more infamous water tricks. At the beginning you can actually drive into the water to the left, but be sure to cross over the finish line backward while out not terribly far away. No items are needed, and you can skip laps this way. Yoshi and Princess are the best choices if you wish to skip laps multiple times, while Bowser and DK Jr. are ideal if you only wish to skip the final lap.
    3. KB2 has a lap skip if you drive rather far out and deep into the water to the right of the finish line and hook back before Lakitu grabs you. A well timed feather or mushroom at top speed will give you the needed distance to pull this tricky one off.
    4. VL2 also showcases a shortcut similar to the KB1 lap skip but you'll need to drive into the water to the left of the finish line and turn back. No items are needed, but they do make it easier. For similar reasons, certain drivers are more ideal for skipping laps multiple times, while others are ideal when you only want to skip near the end.
    Enjoy!

My younger brother thought that the N64 was half his and I was like no way. The physical console was all mine. He could take claim to owning half the games and the extra controller if he wanted but damn no that system was my gaming system. I got a flyer route job like 2 weeks after getting the system that paid about 35 to 45 dollars a month (depended on how many flyers they ran for the month) and I spent 2.5 to 3 hours on a weekend sorting all the dumb stacks of flyers together and delivering it with a wooden radio flyer wagon with the red paint. I think it took 3 trips with that wagon to deliver those flyers. I'm still thankful for my pops and ma for me not getting a Snes or Genesis like most of the other kids on the block since it taught me how to save up for stuff and to appreciate the value of a dollar. l still to this day do online surveys like on the prolific website for an average of 12 dollars CAD net an hour to save for my entertainment slush fund. All my other money has to go towards investments,
house repairs and the mortgage principle payments. I think 85 to 90 percent of my gaming needs are paid form doing the online surveys since 2015. The focus groups back then were fund and paid decent. The prolific ones are more psychological surveys at times and half the time some even play like a video game. Those other surveys about oh what crackers are good for consumer products were mind numbing. Mainly do then while watching videos or streaming.

I gotta say, there's no shortage of love for the channel and the games you cover. And boy do they inspire nostalgia. But given that my grandparents (who whom are gone) and my mother rented or bought me most of these games growing up, they hit me with a different kind of nostalgia, because most of the games (that you've covered) are tied to the memories of them. And those feelings (both sad and happy) are absolutely humanizing in an otherwise cold and uncaring world.

One thing I’d love to see is more mistakes and mistake recovery.
You mentioned hitting right and left to getting a mole of your face. I’m curious how that looks, as I’ve always just repeatedly mashed the jump button to get it off quickly, vs letting it time out and eventually let go of it’s own accord.

I use Yoshi and Toad interchangeably throughout the game. The lightweights "handle" so great is because they are the only ones that counter steer their turns. Yoshi and Princess can throttle steer and its very difficult to do which makes the handling of their carts far harder but it can make them fast especially since they can maintain top speed. I can be as fast between the two classes.

If you counterhop after each slide, you can right your steering and avoid swinging off the edge of the track all the time (or spinning out if you slide too long). This is especially devastating if you're Bowser or DK, as you can really get the most out of their insane top speed. I had something like a 47 second lap in Mario Circuit 1 because it was just so effortless to glide down the track.

Some corrections, thoughts, additions/ things you missed:
    1. How is the 180 boost/ sigzag boost not mentioned *(was briefly mentioned at the very end)*. It's literally one of the most important things in racing. It gives you speed and can be used with the correct timing to drive through dirt.
    2. Toad and Koopa are not best for battle mode. Watch the world championships. They are decent choices for noobs. There are many nuances behind the choice in battle mode raging from speed to cycle through items and velocities to dodge red shells. There's a lot of battle mode tricks.
    3. The star is not a ?most powerful item" at top tier play. You want mushrooms and feathers.
    4. The window for the start boosts changes with certain courses and on different cc modes. Thought this should be pointed out.
5.DP1 nice wall jump, it's usually preformed at the earlier water patch.
    6. GV1 I thought the long mushroom jump (the biggest legal ship) should have been mentioned. It's really hard to do.
    7. BC1 has another feather skip crossing the bottom of the track.
    8. CI1 there is a better feather spot to jump to the finish line.
    9. GV2 you missed the legal finish line feather skip.
    10. DP2 you don't need to bump the wall for the final mushroom trick you listed.
    11. BC 2 you forgot to mention the feather jump across to the finish line over the lava.
    12. MC3 you didn't mention the super zipper boost or the associated infinite long boost possible with middle weight classes.
    13. KB1 How can you not mention the water slide technique to keep speed while driving through water?
    14. VL1 You can power slide through snow without loosing speed by releasing the gas.
    15. GV3 The platform jump is easily made without a feather, and the super zipper boost wasn't mentioned.
    16. RR there's a few epic skips here with mushrooms hitting ramps. Also the legal feather finish wasn't mentioned.
    Overall great video.

Some other commenters probably pointed this out already, but Mode 7 and sprite scaling are separate functions. Sprite scaling is exactly what it sounds like, hardware acceleration for scaling sprites. Mode 7 does involve scaling, but on the background layer.

There is also another hidden yellow jump bar next too the wall in the grassy area right after the finish line, and before the ? Blocks. You can see it plain as day when at the lap skip part of the video. If you have a feather keep it for the entire lap. Then power slide hard as crossing the finish line. Basically U turn. Head toward the blue part of the wall. Use the feather hit the jump and wall to get a power jump boost. Hold left and you will be able to cut practically the entire course. Similar to the Lakitu trick on other courses. Instead of Lakitu it’s all skill using the hidden jump bar, and wall to super jump boost in a circle.
