    I'm sitting on a bottle of each of these, so I'm going to watch this again and replicate your tasting and comparisons this weekend and see what I find. Really enjoyed this. Thanks!

      @@WhiskyMystery I replicated what you did exactly. I have to say that I pretty much came to the same conclusions. Poor Balvenie Double Wood didn't shine as brightly as it used to next to either Glen Garioch or Glen Allachie. I also found the Glen Allachie much more appealing than I remembered with hints of red apple, mango, pineapple and a fleeting glimpse of coconut cream. I don't know if it's just the abv, but the Glen Garioch with the pepper finish was my favorite. When all was said and done, I tried the Balvenie Caribbean Cask along side the others and I think the rum cask and the sweetness helped it show better. It's also a couple more years in barrel. Anyway it was a fun way to kill a couple of hours in this shelter in place world we now find ourselves. Cheers!

      @@befuddled2010 Oh great. Thanks for the update. I really believe you can not go back to a lower ABV after tasting something higher as the High ABV numbs your tong a little each time and really cheats the lower ABV whiskies that follow. Good to know you got a similar experience.

    • @befuddled2010
      @befuddled2010 Před 4 lety +2

      @@WhiskyMystery Yes I understand. The power of the higher abv to deliver more flavors puts the lower abv whiskies at a disadvantage, although I'm sure there are certainly exceptions.

    Great video. I agree on moving up the Glenallachie. I'm kinda Blah on the Glen Garioch 12, too. About 9 months ago at the WhiskyAuctioneer site I snagged a Cadenhead's Glenallachie-Glenlivet 25 yrs @ 58% ABV. Distilled in 92, bottled in 2018. Refill Hogshead. That has been one of the most complex, frame changing whiskies ever for me. The Glenallachie distillery has always had something special going on there and now with Billy Walker at the helm, the recognition of that should rise . Cheers!

    This one was a conundrum for me there were things to like about it but just didn't connect with it. I always put away at least 8oz in the library so coming back to it at some point will be interesting. Always seem to find new things to appreciate when I drink the library bottles. Guess we have two more of these to enjoy after the triple reveal? Cheers

      @Ryan Uchman OK... The GlenLivet Founder's reserve was MEH!!! in my estimation, but the Glen Garioch is just right... Liquor stores in BC could close any day now, especially since I have a good buzz on...LOL

    just picked this up and decided at this late night to pop it open..i was amazed so i had to search for reviews.. i compare this to a Loch Lomond.. do you get smoke on the taste?

    • @WhiskyMystery
      @WhiskyMystery  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Erik. Officially they use unpeated malted barley but it is a 'robust' set of flavours and I sometimes think a charred barrel might come through as a bit of smoke. I was more caught by the green flavours mixed with the sherry. liking it more and more as the bottle goes down.

    I guess Glen Garioch 12 is a bit of acquired taste and temperamental. I like GG12 (for its quirky character), but on some days it tastes ok and on some other excellent. I also detect the peppery note on the finish that you noticed. And adding water just emphasizes it. So this one no adding water for me. (I don’t like too peppery.) Good idea of comparing it to Glenallachie 12 and Balvenie 12. I would never have thought of these two.

    • @WhiskyMystery
      @WhiskyMystery  Před 4 lety +1

      Adding water can certainly push oily pepper to the surface I think. Sometimes a bit more water takes it back down. It is an interesting one. I think generally we like it a bit more now.

    • @bourbonryescotch1
      @bourbonryescotch1 Před 4 lety +1

      @Whisky Mystery Give the GG12 some more time. Maybe it’s an acquired taste. ;-)
      BTW another one that gets too peppery by adding water is Deanston 9yrs 2008 Wine Cask Matured CS. I found it unenjoyable after adding water.

      @Whisky Mystery That’s a good suggestion, keep adding water till destruction. I need to try this. (I always stop adding water way too early. I guess I am a bit afraid of overdiluting it.)
