  • After 8 years of school and 1 year of residency, I finally accomplished my goal of becoming a clinical inpatient pharmacist! I'll be recording my pharmacy journey - navigating life as a first time pharmacist fresh out of my pharmacy residency.
    This video is my overall advice about each year in pharmacy school and how you can set yourself up to become a hospital pharmacist like me! Keep in mind, everyone has a different path to get to where they are - this is just mine. Yours might be different and that's okay!

    Great advice Sarah! I also recommend obtaining an intern pharmacist experience during school and was fortunate to work in a progressive hospital setting during my P1-P4 year.

    hi!!! I’ve been a tech for about 4 years (outpatient / retail) and i LOVE what I do. I recently made the decision to start a pre pharmacy program ( about two years of general pre reqs, then apply to a pharmacy program)
    My only concern is that I’m not confident that before I get admitted to a universitys pharmacy program, that I will learn everything that there is when it comes to basic science (biology and chemistry), unless they will teach me all of that once I am enrolled. Any insight will help, I love your videos and thanks for what you do!

      Congrats on starting your pharmacy journey!! That is a very valid concern, but don't worry - most pharmacy schools will have courses during your P1 year to refresh everyone regarding the basic sciences. A lot of people start their pharmacy school journey at different stages of their life so most pharmacy schools will understand and provide several courses in the beginning to make sure all the students have the same basic foundation to start off.

    I've been told that there is a difference in pay for a entry level pharmacist as a clinical hospital pharmacist?

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před rokem +1

      It varies depending on the hospital! However, I assume that’s standard for most hospitals. For the VA (veterans administration) your pay increases in “steps.” So you start off as step 1. The longer you stay at the VA, the more your pay increases to the next step. The first couple years, your pay increases yearly. Then every 2-3 years, etc. you can max up to 10 steps!

      @@L1L2L3L4S it stands for Veterans Administration! They are federal hospitals for veterans and there are multiple VAs spread throughout the United States. It’s one of the largest American health systems

    How many hours did you work as a intern during P1?

    • @SarahPharmD
      @SarahPharmD  Před 5 měsíci

      I actually didn't start interning until the summer after P1 year! P1 year we all applied for internships, but most of them didn't start until the summer :) During the summer, most of us worked full time. During school, I worked the weekends and had one weekend off per month (~16 hrs/week). It sounds rough, but it was actually pretty doable. Most people in my pharmacy school had internships!
