Here we are again my friend. Great video as always. That being said; the original NES will always hold a special place in my life. The only other home console I had ever played was my older brother's Atari 2600. He was so good at Spider Fighter and Seaquest he could flip the score back over. But then came the almighty NES and I turned a blind eye away from Atari's weak hardware and never looked back. Countless friends were made discussing, passwords, battle tactics, music and graphics, that to this day; I'm quite certain there will never be another gaming phenomenon quite like the introduction of the NES.
...I think the N64 Expansion Pak deserves its own t-shirt too.

Wii and newer got very… commercial feeling. Obviously there are lots of amazing new nintendo games but back in the day it seemed like they were more edgy, less censored, more questionable themes (majoras mask anyone?)
Still love them but I miss their darker side
Majora's Mask makes sense because they needed to make it stand out from the rest.
What a lot of people don't know is that Nintendo actually SUPPORTED Conker's Bad Fur Day for the N64, which had very sad themes and crude humor. This is also likely due to the PlayStation GREATLY outselling Nintendo because of how edgy they are (let's face it, GTA gets on top of every 10-year-old Christmas list).
Now, I think Nintendo is more or less just taking the child friendly approach because then it would be a giant battle between them and PS5 and XBox.
Amazing how ninty never picked up Eternal Darkness again, that was such a cool game.
If you like your Nintendo more on the dark side, don't miss out on Metroid Dread. Also the Famicom Detective Club games on Switch. And not for nothing, but Nintendo were the ones that funded and published Bayonetta 2 & 3. There are more examples but that should get you started. Cheers!
You could also argue old Nintendo was more censored. Remember the green Mortal Kombat blood on SNES?
@@bryanfahey3144 Yeah, but that was *one* game. The other MK games had full blood and fatalities, and the SNES had DOOM. Not to mention RARE and Nintendo developed/published Killer Instinct for SNES which was very bloody and violent.
The SNES version of Mortal Kombat had censorship for sure, but it is...not nearly as bad as its reputation would have people believe. But I won't get into that now.
As I age, sometimes I think about how there will eventually come a time where I am waiting for a new game to come out that I'm looking forward to but will never see. Also, I look around my room and have to come to terms with the terrible fact that I will not beat all of these games in my life.
I've been gaming on Nintendo systems since the original brick Game Boy. The SNES is one of my favourite consoles of all time and I love retro gaming. That said, my favourite system of all time is the Nintendo Switch! It just blends everything that was great about Nintendo's home consoles and handheld consoles together. Also you get all the great modern games as well as so many great ports of retro titles.

We grew up in a normal neighborhood, except my neighbor across the street. They had a gated driveway, a horse stable with a horse, 2 go karts that looked like real cars, rc nitro cars, a pond and fishing dock, but the thing that stuck with me forever was what was inside. It was something that would change my life forever...The Nintendo Entertainment System, and the first game I played was Super Mario Bros. THE END.

Nintendo still has a bunch of folks who were around during the NES and SNES days. I can't help but wonder how much they'll change once the old guard is fully gone.

Nintendo will release a couple of duff consoles in succession then start making games for other systems, like Sega.
@@WiiGamer77 I find it unlikely, even though they are a mostly software company their hardware sells very well, the Wii U was a one off, the Wii was a massive success and the DS too, heck even Gamecube did very well for its time in competition with the biggest console of all time!
I don't see Nintendo leaving the hardware space anytime soon.

I'm a Nintendo Kid & I love all the old throw backs the Switch is doing. Big fan of side scroll adventures and racing games. Last game I bought due to cover was Super Monkey Ball Mania!
Had to play two player mode & say were playing Super Monkey Balls Now! Too bad the cover did not come with scratch & sniff. Might of smelled like Banana! Can only hope for it in the sequel.
I love Nintendo in general, whether old or new. Its one of the few companies who have stuck to a more colorful, cartoonish style that feels like a videogame. Its what turns me away from other companies who focus on more realistic and gritty.
You said it best when you said the Wii was the console that really split up old and new Nintendo. I was born in 96' with a couple older siblings already playing vids when I was born so I got to experience the best of both worlds, that being the world of Super Nintendo, N64 and GBC. The Gamecube was the first "new Nintendo console" I saw release and by the time the Wii came out I was already 10 years old and we still preferred gamecube/ps2 over the Wii, but Nintendo switch was the console that sort of brought me home to my nintendo roots
I grew up in the 8 and 16 bit era. It was quite a fantastic time for gamers! That being said, I like both but for different reasons. I do like the comfort food that is older Nintendo titles as many of them are still quite fun to just pick up and play again! Though, I also like new Nintendo for taking established franchises and adding a new spin on them (case in point, Kirby and the Forgotten Land as you displayed)
Although, unfortunately, Nintendo's crummy business practices haven't evolved like some of their game series have.
Nintendo has always been about quality games in my opinion. Were there some stinkers that somehow had that seal of approval? Absolutely, but the in-house games were always fantastic!
I remember getting my 1st Gameboy Advance SP Nintendo for Christmas. I was impressed with the whole charger concept that replaced batteries. Although, I also loved how you didn't need to buy a light for it if you play in the dark.
I can't really say if I like old or new Nintendo more. I didn't get into video games until I got my 3DS and later my Switch, but old Nintendo is still so fascinating.
Old Nintendo was the peak. The company these days is only a shadoe of it once was in the 1980s to early 2000s.

I wanted Super Nintendo when I was a kid. But my family couldn’t afford it and bought me Nintendo when I was a kid. Now I have a snes after 40 years and am enjoying it thoroughly.
I honestly think I might love new Nintendo just as much as old Nintendo, which is a lot of love. They continue to innovate and push their IP’s into new and interesting places (for the most part). But it does kill me that there is SO much potential for amazing new entries for Star Fox and especially F-Zero! Come on already Nintendo, take more of my money!!! Please!!! 😭🙏

I honestly loved the Wii u, It's still hooked up to my TV and sits right next to my switch on the shelf it's on. Not only is it a great emulation device, it has access to a ton of great games, be it from the Wii, Wii U or the GC side of things, and not to mention the amazing virtual console support it had. Sad that it's coming to an end in 9 days though, I'll miss the times with my wii u, though I suppose in some way or another the homebrew scene will bring the servers back online at a future date.

Honestly, my biggest gripe with modern Nintendo is the gap in hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft. The Switch has graphics roughly on par with the Xbox 360, a console which was released in 2005. Graphics aren't everything, but I wish they'd use the next console generation to catch up, power-wise. I'd be happy with a "Switch Pro" that was on par (or close to it) with the PS5. Or even the PS4.
Switch is not a PS4 but is still pretty far from the 360 in terms of power.

You're correct! The GameCube and GBA were the last of Old Nintendo, whereas the Wii and DS were the beginning of New Nintendo. A nice clean split.
Old Nintendo wanted their hardware to compete. New Nintendo doesn't really care about competitive hardware.
While I’ve lost touch with how many titles any given publisher might release in any given year, I can’t imagine a company like Konami (all things hypothetically equal) would even be able to release the likes of enough titles per year to worry about publishing limits. AAA titles tend to take years and $$$ to develop, seems they’d be working for console GENERATIONS to even try to parallel the output required to spin-off something like an Ultra Games sidestep of limitations (as alluded to in the video). Fun trip down memory lane, as always!

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the channel and I appreciate the kind words. Funny you should mention mostly listening to the channel, because I actually make a joke about that in my last video (the one about GBA compared to Genesis/SNES).
Switch era is good but point taken about old Nintendo being the pioneers. Respect where it’s due. I do think the Switch library is my favorite library for a Nintendo console since the GameCube, so I look at the current era as a bit of a renaissance. But everything done now is built on the foundation of those first few consoles and their innovative libraries. Happy to experience both eras!

I wish people would discuss the "kiddie" reputation they got during the N64-GC era, which really peaked in the early 2000's. Their decisions to ignore a lot of what the market wanted & instead dictate to everyone what THEY wanted us to buy, really hurt sales & made them rethink their entire strategy.
It's like they had a habit of learning all the wrong lessons from failures, or at the very least, didn't want to look bad by admitting fault & succumbing to fan demand.
*Example:* N64 sales aren't what we hoped. Fans don't like getting 1 game a month or paying $80 for a cartridge of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Fans are also complaining about lack of variety in our games & everything being a cartoony collect-a-thon, cartoony platformer or a racer. They're calling us "kiddie!" They also seem to like multi-functionality of CD's & the hype for DVD's is huge! 🤔
*Solution:* Oh yeah?! Would a "kiddie" company release a lunchbox-looking purple cube with a handle?! And what's our most significant IP that targets teens/adults? Zelda? Yeah! Make that as cartoony as possible...like a literal cartoon! GENIUS! That'll shut up those "kiddie" complaints! 😎
We also ditched cartridges, but moving to DVD's like everyone else would show we're following instead of leading... let's do mini-discs with 1/3 the capacity! Oh, and tell media in interviews the GC is a "toy" & Nintendo is a "toy company" first & foremost. That'll make Sony & newcomer MS look foolish for targeting multimedia accessibility, just like their future online multiplayer plans! Tell everyone we're ignoring that in favor of GBA link cable support!
*Result:* "You mean to tell me all those changes resulted in even LESS sales?! 😱................................. Well I guess it's because we were chasing power! Definitely wasn't because we ignored the fans & market. Nope. It was definitely chasing hardware specs. Guess we gotta change up our whole philosophy!
It is weird how Nintendo got the reputation for being "kiddie" during the N64/GCN era. I mean, some of the top games for N64 were Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, and the Turok series. Not exactly cartoony collect-a-thons.
The GCN was an odd choice, no argument there. But to be fair, it also came out in a jet black color. And Zelda may have went cartoony, but Nintendo did publish (and help develop) Eternal Darkness, as well as Metroid Prime. Not to mention they someone convinced Capcom to make Resident Evil exclusive to GCN. The mini-DVDs weren't a big hinderance anyway. Most games came out on one disc regardless. And at worst, two. Not like the PSOne (and the 360 in the next gen) where games would come out on two, three, or even four discs!
Nintendo seems to have learned their lesson though. Switch sales are doing pretty good. 🙂
New Nintendo having a gimmick with each console is like a gamble. A good number of people want the Switch successor to just be more powerful and backwards compatible with Switch games. However “Nintendo has got to Nintendo” and the next console’s gimmick can affect its sales either in a good or bad way.

Heck yeah! I also have these digitally, the former on 3DS and the latter on Switch, but busting out those old consoles on the CRT is SO much more satisfying. These were '92 and '96 Christmas gifts, so playing on original hardware feels like a nice trip back to early '93 and early '97! And these days, I sure need to remember and reminisce about those days once in a while (if not often). Great content as always--please keep it coming!
They should do with F-Zero what they've been doing with Mario Kart. Release one game and then just add tracks to it over the years instead of having to keep releasing new games. I think that would make F-Zero fans happy.
Whenever I hear “New Nintendo”, I always think back to the horrendous 3DS naming scheme.

Anyone else picture retro bird living in Minnesota or Wisconsin, the palm trees really surprised me.
I use to go shop to shop & wear all their nes consoles out, cause I was a peasant. Then after a few years they started fitting timers lol so you could only play for a few minutes. still didn't stop me.. Then the cheeky gits took the control pads out, so I took my own controller into town & plug her in. Best days of my life getting chase around the shops & all that.
To me the old versus new Nintendo line in the sand is the CZcams scene and when Nintendo started striking down all of the gameplay footage. I realized the childhood company that I loved it so much was just a corporation trying to make sure that you would buy their product instead of watch someone else played and I realized they weren't interested in how much I enjoyed my experience they were only interested in me purchasing what they had made. For me it's around 2012 is when Nintendo kind of changed in my eyes.

I didn’t really have the majority of video games growing up so the switch is great! And the the retro emulators on NSO make it possible to play the games I could only dream of growing up.
All in all, I like ALL of Nintendo.
It's funny how the gimmick for the SNES was the 6 button controller and its layout. Ever since then; it became the industry standard of the base controller. Im hoping the Switch dies the same as it reinvented the way we think about playing our games and it becomes the standard for all other consoles moving foward.
I think of Nintendo’s business as Pre-Iwata era, the Satoru Iwata era (best if you like crazy swings for the fences/innovation/“gimmicks”) and Post-Iwata era, that technically hasn’t released a game system yet.
I'm the most likely to turn on my SNES, but my modded 3DS and Switch Lite get a ton of attention too, so it's really a horse a piece for me
As far as game development goes- Nintendo is still going strong, if not stronger than ever. Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Kirby and the Forgotten Land are some of the best games they have ever made. Making the Switch a hybrid console was a genius move and the amazing 3rd party support has made it one of the best consoles of all time. On the business side of things though, I would say they have reached an all time low. Whether it be refusing to even acknowledge Joycon drift or releasing straight up unfinished games (Pokemon Scarlet and Violet), it's safe to say that their current management don't really care about their audience.
*Absolutely* the "old" Nintendo, especially in the not-so-old GameCube days: between the quality of the hardware and the quality of the games, they really put in an effort that we haven't seen since, in my opinion. And their prices were arguably at their most reasonable in history: $300 Canadian for the console at launch (dropping to $140 and lower within a few years), $50 for a new first-party game, and $20-40 for Player's Choice titles (hey, remember those?).
Starting with the Wii, Nintendo took a hard turn in a direction that I disliked, and they've never looked back. I've become interested in newer games again since then, but never to the same degree as back in 2000-2005. And while I'll probably pick up and enjoy a _few_ Switch games a decade late (similar to what I did on Wii and Wii U), I dislike the company on several levels now.
But hey, that's one of the great things about retro gaming: pick what you like, and don't worry about what modern gaming is doing! :)
In the last 20 years we got more new IP as we can imagine...
Splatoon is the biggest one sure, but Xenoblade is become one of the best JRPG series and many other like ARMS, Ringfit, Astral Chain, the Wii series, Codename STEAM, Dillon Rolling Western, Pushmo, Boxboy and many new spinoff like Mario Kaker, Captain Toad, Hyrule Warriors...
Nintendo being strict and only allowing 5 games a year from publishers was so they couldn't flood the market with crap. Overall I think it was a good choice. It meant they had to be more creative and careful with their releases. Some companies got around this of course like Konami creating Ultra Games. Since games take alot longer to make now it doesn't sound like a big deal but it was back then. It would be like if publishers were only allowed to put out 2 games a year on Switch now a days.
What's funny is that there were still plenty of bad NES games released anyways :)
I don't play anything more recent than the N64, since I have too much old stuff to discover, but I'm glad Nintendo is still around and being successful. They are the only true videogame maker left, in my eyes, and if I had to buy a modern system, it would be no doubt the Switch
Gamecube and Switch are my favorite eras of Nintendo. N64 was my first console, so I have a sweetspot for that era as well.
What about f zero, kid Icarus, the goonies, excitebike, pro wrestling, Castlevania, tiny toons, wrecking Crew, dragon warrior, super Spike V Ball, nintendo world cup, blades of steel, Ice hockey, super sprint, and super dodge ball.
Modern versions of all those games would be cool.
Nintendo is the same... I changed. Used to play Super Mario Bros and Rockman in the 80s, but now I play Rimworld and Automobilista 2, that aren't Nintendo material, for the good and the bad. Nintendo is that old pub where you go to meet old friends and talk the same talk... but with better graphics. Cheers!

I think I've come to terms with the fact that Nintendo will never bring back most, if any of their old mascots or storylines. I'm 29 and I literally just got into the earthbound series, mother 1, earthbound (mother 2 in japan) and mother 3. I honestly have a hard time believing they abandoned such a storyline, sure they released the old games on the Nintendo eShop for awhile, I'm talkin full on remake. Also conker was a mascot that never even got off the ground, they took a bare bones game, 12 tales, or conkers quest and just forgot it ever existed because of the failure of bad fur day. Which I get, I played bad fur day recently and while I was entertained, I never beat it. I accidentally deleted the file because it was emulated and the mechanics screwed that game. They really just cling to Zelda and the Mario Bros at this point, maybe kirby here and there. I miss they era of Nintendo where mascots were still a possibility, almost like applying for a job.
It makes me cry to see so much demanding for F-Zero and Nintendo is like... "nope".
Growing up with Nintendo was a great time. Unforgettable moments, so the nostalgia part is big point for old Nintendo. The Nintendo magazines have been loyal companions.
Nowadays I have to say their online system is a mess. Especially on the Wii U it has been a big mees for some games to setup a session. And it felt that it has taken ages since a Mario Party game was playable online with All functions. On the other hand, their online service is far from a GamePass, but to have the option to play SNES games together online is something I believe not even emulators are capable of.
And, off topic, great to read that there are some more breadclip lovers here😂. With bananas and water, great sidekicks in this show.

In my country, SEGA dominated the market. I was a NES kid, but upgrade d to the Mega Drive and Sega CD, eventually. I used to be envious of those who had a Master System. Nobody cares about Contra back here.
I lived in a small village in the Netherlands and as a kid i did not even knew Sega was a video game company, i thought they just made pc games as Golden axe is the first game i played (the dos port) But i love me some nintendo and i would be sad if i need to miss it.

They've had new ips but it's been untraditional. Pikmin, ChibiRobo, Arms. So youa re absolutely right... from a certain point of view.
Funny enough, the first Pikmin is over 20 years old now too. Arms looked like Nintendo actually tried to position it as their next big IP. It didn't really blow up the way Splatoon did. We'll see though... a sequel could come at some point and start to position it differently.
I like the old Nintendo for their Zelda games. Breath of the Wild just isn't my kind of Zelda that I grew up playing.
Back in the day the Nes used to be called the old Nintendo and the Snes was the new Nintendo.

I think I'm torn: a part of me prefers the old Nintendo (in games) for the nostalgia, and reliving that fun, but the other part of me thinks that Nintendo at the moment as a company, are stuck in the past, and need to catch up to the 21st century, lol.
Old Nintendo: fun, complete and ever lasting game consoles
New Nintendo: not that fun, lots of DLCs and micropayments and 1 year lasting console material designs
It's amazing that almost all game series that we love now was born during the NES era!
Just look at NES Classic Mini and you understand that.
I still love NES so crazy much! I don't have one. We sold our NES in the early 90s to buy SNES. But I have NES Classic Mini, and of course NES on Switch Online but that's just "ones and zeroes". NES Classic Mini is hardware, it's a real thing!
I also prefer the controllers from NES and SNES. Especially NES: only Dpad + select + start + B + A. So easy! The more buttons and stuff is not always automatically better.
I also liked the Wii controller. Thanks to the few buttons. Almost like the good old NES controller.
I also see Switch + Switch Online + a good NES controller as a great way to play games. Why spend 40-60 dollar per game when you can spend 20 dollar/year to have so many great NES and SNES games? And now also GB games... to save even more money you can buy a used Switch console.
New Nintendo because I can play every single Nintendo game 🎮 and Etc, Swich is the kind of gaming 👌

While their policies old and new have their good and bad their push with controllers has always been interesting, each IP and the variety in them. Whether you care for graphics or interesting uses of tech/gameplay then a typical methods forever. It's one of those things where the other two are tech companies they still have their toy company aspects to them I think even if a gaming company not into other tech areas at all of TVs, computers, MP3 players, phones and more only software on phones and their consoles and their hardware. So their in a very interesting position to be the most different and I think their stance while can be awkward makes sense because they aren't Sony or Microsoft with tons of other business sectors they get money from.
Great point on the phone/tablet side of things too. Having many consoles makes it interesting for kids today then just a tablet being an easy one for educational or just an easy device to put in the face of a kid due to being a gamer parent I bet then the days of before for sure will be interesting due many from different platforms to just 2D/3D or handheld to start with. The parents make it clear what the child gets access to and a phone/tablet is easy unless into gaming and are knowledgeable enough or have existing ones still around.
I think GameCube was the case as the tonal difference in games even if N64 they did consider it a bit as well but otherwise yes the cartridge/Mini GameCube disk focus or Wii/DS were different factors (besides the Gameboy Advance rumble and tilt cartridges too are notable) as well. 3D with Virtual Boy or GameCube or GBA that were planned till before the 3DS.
With tech Nintendo aren't always the first but they do interesting things. I mean I just learnt the GPX2 had Linux and tv support something I knew the PSP and Nomad had before the Switch but besides their other handhelds have a Gameboy accessory with their consoles. Or laptops/tablets/Pocket PCs and PDAs wirelessly or cable to the TV meaning the Switch isn't the first but the Joycon and splitscreen to a handheld is still unique and cool even if most people focus on the TV part and I just laugh as it isn't the first to do so in gaming but still a welcome feature to continue the possibility to do so like those before it or just casting my phone to the tv even if it's laggy and not a great experience.
Splatoon, Rhythm Heaven, Arms, Clubhouse games is a series now DS/Switch, others are one offs of Game Builder Garage, Toycons or others or you have the Wii series people forget to mention.
Mario is popular and a good gateway to genres but eh. The design is fine but I think some people overhyped what they do. I prefer their less platformer (depends what they offer as I've looked to sixth gen ones or Indies doing interesting things more)/adventure (Sony or third parties offer too many so it put me off them. Nintendo are known for 2D platformers for a while in the 3DS/Wii U era but also NES/SNES era too) games and more their strategy like Pikmin (not a big strategy person but I enjoy them and Pikmin's formula for strategy is really unique and cool) Tactics with Fire Emblem, Starfox as I like vehicular combat games just rarely get into them, and such.
Missed out on GameCube and before (only experienced some either physical with Wave Race, broken Double Dash disk, or emulation mostly) but am getting around to it. Virtual console N64 on Wii U.
Their the company I look to for gaming even if I still look broad at the others, started with Sony consoles and tried out Xbox or some Nintendo systems and research whatever their efforts even if sometimes safe others out of this world are good to have around.
I definitely prefer older gaming but I gotta say I’m proud of where nintendos at. And this is coming from a Sega fan back in the day. I think they’ve done great at respecting where they’ve come from and even respecting their former rivals
I think many can't remember old Nintendo being bad since most of us were kids but now we can tell the awful things they do to their most loyal fans which is sad especially for the smash community
honestly the publishing limit is probably what led those years be full of all time great games. Totally makes sense, a publishing limit today would up the quality of games overall
I’ve been waiting for this discussion from you. So glad we finally are getting it. Love it, RB! Grew up on the old NES, skipped over the SNES, jumped into the N64 in the mid-2000s, played the GC at a friends house frequently and just bought one in 2022, played GameBoy Advance in the mid-2000s, skipped all of the DS stuff unless a friend let me play on one of their spares, played Wii with friends for years, dabbled with the Wii U briefly, and dove headfirst into the Switch era. Nintendo has always been a good time for me. The company has definitely changed these days catering more towards limited selections, making weird releases, and definitely needing some hardware upgrades. Overall it’s been a mixed bag the last 9 years. Nintendo proper really doesn’t know what they want, development of simple things takes longer than it should, and not every game appeals to a wide variety except for the first party Mario titles minus the sports games, some Kirby stuff, Splatoon sort of, Zelda, and just recently more: Metroid. It’s been hit or miss. I find myself going back and playing older stuff and newer stuff at random. Gamecube, while fun, definitely got expensive over the course of the pandemic and doesn’t seem to be slowing down all that much. Certain systems likely won’t drop pricing on titles until the markets start to level out again if the economy ever recovers. I’ve pretty much stopped buying games outright because my backlog is massive and I’m trying to appreciate more of what I already have in my collection. After recently cataloguing it all, it dawned on me how very little I’ve truly completed. So that’s my goal to start really diving back into games of all generations and really getting the whole value out of every single one. Nintendo or otherwise. Overall there have been clunkers in every Nintendo generation, but it’s been a fun ride overall no matter the era you play in. I would say if they invest in better servers and slightly upgrade the tech, I would give them a standing ovation. While my singleplayer titles are fun, games like Smash and co-op online stuff really should be seamless in 2023.
So agree on this one. Old Nintendo till NGC and GBA. After that forcing me to get along with gimmicks. I have 2DS basic model not the clamshell one and Switch. The reason I like NS is because it leaves me with option how I want to play it as a standard without forcing me to some gimmick'ish play style. Good video as usual keep them coming 👍
I grew up in the 8 and 16 bit eras and I thought old Nintendo was great. I still love new Nintendo but my one gripe as some CZcamsrs put it is that “Nintendo has got to Nintendo.” This means Nintendo has to do a gimmick with their console and make the established series use it. The best example is the Zelda series. There are some great ideas like using a second screen for inventory but bad ones like using motion controls that had to be recalibrated frequently in Skyward Sword.
I enjoy both old & new Nintendo for different reasons, but if I had to choose then it's old Nintendo all the way. I find their older games to be more repayable as they usually have shorter lengths or are more about the gameplay, well most old games anyway. Though Mario Odyssey & Breath Of The Wild are amazing games in their own right.
I feel like bringing back an equivalent to the only 5 games a year for publishers would be a great rule. It'd have to change as games take much longer to make (for AAA at least) so some publishers are lucky to get 5 games out in a year. I think it's more around quality control of games though, Nintendo always nail it (same with other first party games usually) but I think it'd be nice to have some curation on consoles again vs the mess of releases it's become.
To be clear I'm all for allowing anyone to release a game on your platform so there's more games, but I think what defines an actual video game that qualifies for release (not a mobile port, substantial effort put into the gameplay, presentation, etc) should be a more narrow definition than it is now.
