- honestly one of if not the worst special edition changes its changed in literally every single version of the special edition (1997, 2004 DVD, 2011 Blu Ray, and 2019 Disney +) and its gotten to the point where they fire at the exact same time rendering the whole entire change pointless
i made this cuz i was bored
@Star Wars Mansplained it might honestly, theres no other video that i know of with all 5 versions of this scene
Its good! I still haven’t seen a good explanation why they added that Greedo line. To let Greedo have the last word? Stupid
Thank you! I never laughed so hard!
Yes, I bet you were.
Background: Greedo once saved fellow bounty hunter Spurch ("Warhog") Goa's life. HOW does Goa repay him? By accepting a genocidal tyrant's bounty on Greedo's life and (since he didn't have the heart to squeeze the firing stud himself) setting Greedo up to take on Han Solo, knowing Greedo would probably be killed.
I guess you could say Dante Alighieri would have... rather _chilling_ words for Goa, and _absolute zero_ sympathy.
Wow this scene gets better every time they change it! For the next version they should just have them shoot back and forth across the table missing each other about 25 times until Han finally says “Oh yeah? Macklunkey THIS!” and then blasts him
Lol underrated comment 😅 I could see Ford saying that for sure.
Ah, the SWRPG edition.
Is it bad I'd be down for that?
They blast 'em
Nah, next time Han will not shoot at all) Greedos blast will just bounce from the wall and kill him)

What’s ironic about it? That’s kinda the whole point of the meme is that absolutely nothing of value has been added by ANY of these additions.

The special editions had editions that range from kind of annoying to kind of neat usually falling under pointless.
The kind kf neat stuff is stuff like They added shots of the wampa in ep5 that had no cg and was great. They made the emporor less ugly in transmission in ep 5. They fixed the lightsabers glow. They
Now the pointless the goofy laser they added was supposed to fix a movie mistake. Han was never meant to shoot first. The thing is though nothing actyally changes in the scene besides the goofy laser. They added some breif cg momments that added nothing.
Kind of annoying stuff includes alien covering a shot for no reason. Out of place Visuals that werent that great because they were dated (context tbe prequals pioneered a lot of cgi used today and it shows because while they looked great at the time they didbt age well and the special edition clearly was made aroubf the same time as the prequals and they released it in 2011. Btw this isnt to say the prequals are perfect but the cgi is a criticism is a unfair cretique because they had to render battlefields on old computors by today standards)
The first version, Greedo is a seasoned killer. The other versions, he's never even hit a target on purpose. The Original is the only one that makes any sense.
If it was up to me, I would use the original version, but with the McClunky line added.
having greedo shoot microseconds before han is so pointless because with human reaction times it is equivalent to han shooting first
It just makes Greedo look absolutely incompetent
I look forward to the 2026 version where Greedo just says "Maclunkey" and then falls down dead, no shots fired by anyone.
Wrong. He sees a Disney Princess and falls over out of duty.
_Maclunkey_
The fact that there are 5 versions of this is insane.... This is the embodiment of "if it aint broken dont fix it".
"if it ain't BROKE..." there, fixed it!
"If it ain't broke... fix it til it is!"
@@erik0x4dBy bypassing the compressor?
The original version of this scene is true to the original script, which says that there is a blinding flash of light and then Han pulls his smoking gun out from under the table. The script contains no evidence of Greedo firing a shot. In the original version, the video evidence is a little unclear, but the audio evidence contains the sound of only one blast. To me, I find it hard to believe that a skilled bounty hunter would miss the easy point-blank shot so badly, and then Han would make the harder under-the-table shot just a fraction of a second later.
Totally agree
If Greedo shoots first Han would be dead, that's why the original version where Han is the only one who shot is better, because it is impossible for a bounty hunter like Greedo to miss a shot.

The final iteration of this scene will be Han and Greedo putting their guns down. They have a romantic dinner, and have an intimate night together. They go back to the cantina after an argument, and Han shoots.
A romantic dinner at McCluncky's.
Or maybe Greedo and his chicken wife just invite Solo to a dinner to reconcile, they resume their hostilities again after trying to pay the bill at the same time, and Solo ends up frying Greedo's brains.
But who shot first during the night together?
Like with a blaster, or a money shot?
McClunkey Time!

I have tons of respect for George but there's some things he does that I just cannot get behind, like adding "no, NOOOOOOOOOOO" to the end of ROTJ... I think he was trolling the prequel haters or something because that change is ridiculous.
He's a scoundrel and a criminal anyway. He should be a cold blooded killer. Instead they made him kind of goofy.

@@lukastace3154in the disney+ version, Vader screams "noooo" again when he saves Luke, that change was made during Lucas' reign
@@cloudmaster182 ahh, i see
Honestly the original scene makes perfect sense with the situation and Han's character generally in the movie no matter how you cut it. Either Han knew he was about to get blasted and just took out his attacker, or he's the scoundrel Lucas painted him as and murdered the bounty hunter.
george lucas putting maclunky into the scene is genuinely psychotic, there's no meaning and it was put in after 40 years.
It’s from new language used in the prequel trilogy, apparently. I like it, but Greedo needs to not shoot, and Hans shot needs to be under the table.
Georgie was destroying Star Wars long before Mickey got his woke white mitts on it.
I want to see this scene changed so many times that it’s no longer recognizable. By the year 2040 I want it to have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the movie. Have an entirely different alien other than greedo walk in and past Han then have the entire cantina erupt into a flash mob and start singing for absolutely no reason
“When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk.” - Eli Wallach
I'm pretty sure you are allowed to shoot first if the other guy has a gun pointed at you, Idk why this was ever a big deal for them.
Some people honestly believe you shouldn’t hurt someone unless they hurt you first. No matter what the other person’s actions and words say they are about to do. I disagree with that. I believe in FAFO. With that being said, in a wild wild west setting, Greedo was justified in wanting to harm Han because Han owed him a lot of money and obviously wasn’t ever going to pay. Greedo can’t just sue him in galactic empire civil court. Han was also justified in shooting first, because his life was in imminent danger. George should have left it alone. But I do like the McClunky addition TBH.
so much smoke and we still have to see his weird cgi neck bend

All these changes and Chewie still gets no medal.
Had Greedo somehow survived this encounter his marksmanship skills would have made him an excellent stormtrooper.
*George Lucas sitting bolt upright from a dead sleep* : "Maclunkey! By god that's it!"
The fact that theres 5 versions of a scene that never needed changing and Chewie still gets no medal is laughable
The best version is the 2024 Remastered Maclunkey Edition Vol. 6 Sec. 5 where Greedo says “You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?” before firing at Han.
Greedo is worse than a stormtrooper if he misses when Hans that close. For anyone else he would have been impossible to miss.
When Han said "It's shootin' time" and proceeded to shoot Greedo, I sobbed uncontrollably.
The part that got me was when Greedo went "it's macklunkin' time", and started macklunking all over Han. Such an epic moment.
You know, this is a bigger change than it appears on the surface. 70s solo was a cold hard reality of the world. Not a good or fair man, or a bad one. Grey. And I love this.
that Maclunkey really brought the scene together! Bravo George!
We came from Han straight murdering greedo to Han dodging and killing greedo for autodefence
The change was a moment of weakness for George.
If Greedo shoots first Han would be dead, that's why the original version where Han is the only one who shot is better, because it is impossible for a bounty hunter like Greedo to miss a shot.
It was self defence in all cases
The original was absolutely the best by a long shot.
it's maclunking time
Ranking from shittiest to best:
1. Macklunkey
2. 1997, it’s so slow and the bad effects really show
3. 2004, slightly better than ‘97 but still awful
4. 2011, at least it’s the same speed as the original
5. Original. Of course.
2024 Version: Greedo shoots himself after saying MacLunkey. 😊
2031 Version: Greedo shoots first, but it ricochet off the wall. 😁
2037 Version: Greedo has an explosive heart attack. Says something else after MacLunkey! 😊
2047 Version: Greedo's shot ricochets, kills him after saying MacLunkey! and the new word.😁
2077 Version: Greedo implodes after saying MacLunkey and the new word. 😁
No matter how hard they try to change this, they will never replace the original 1977s way.
I don't understand Lucas’ reason for altering this scene alone.
George didn’t want Han to look like the “bad guy” but that’s what I don’t understand, Han is supposed to be this shady smuggler who shoots first and asks questions later. That change was so incredibly stupid.
@@Kraemerrr Not to mention the fact that Greedo is outwardly there to kill him, so shady smuggler or not, he's acting in complete and utter justified self defense.

But where is the version where Greedo said: "It's greeding time!" before firing his shot? I remember it from when I was on it in the movies as a kid. The whole theater sighed in relief when Han fired back and got out of it unharmed.

Just put it back to 77 for god's sake! Nice Video showing all the different versions
I was as kid in 77 when I saw this. At no time have I ever had an issue with Han firing first. I always thought Greedo was going to shoot him, his speech and actions lead you to believe this. Lucas wrote the novelization and stated that Greedo made a mistake by letting Han put his had below the table. The Times today had an article on this and talks about a Han Redemption arc, I never thought there was redemption arc, the redemption arc was caring more about the money than the rebellion and then saving Luke at the end, not shooting Greedo.
Unironically, the only thing they could have done to make the original better is just add Greedo saying “macklunkey” right before Han smokes him. George Lucas, come on man.
Agreed. Original version with McClunky added gives the best of both worlds. It’s my dream edit.
There has to be an interactive Star Wars where you choose only the edits you want to see:
- Greedo shot first ❌
- "Macklunkey!" ✔
- CGI Jabba ❌
- Storm trooper head bonk sound ✔✔✔✔✔✔
-....
This serves as the perfect symbol for the incremental deterioration of the trilogy films stories and production. They just couldn't let a good thing be...
Nice! I like all versions of this scene as long as GL made them!
All these versions and not one of them still make as much sense as the original. And the reason why the change was made was even dumber, since Han was in it for himself initially and Greedo clearly threatened his life first and he was defending himself anyway.
I bet
2999 version edit will be cooler
"Han missed his shot and Greedo managrd to kill Han"
I never understood why Lucas felt the need to change this scene. 1977 is perfect as is.
Me neither. Kill the stupid bug at any point in the movie, there is zero moral dilemma to Han doing it.
If Han shot him for target practice it would've been fine, it's an ugly bug.
Wait, Maclunkey wasn't in the original version? 🤣 (or any of the the versions I probably saw) Why did the line on it's own sound so iconic though... xD
In retrospect the 1997 version is probably the smoothest (other than the og).

The thing is that in every version Han shoots in self defense. Whether greedo actually fires or not he’s still pointing a gun at Han. So Han shooting is always an act of self defense no matter the version. The change doesn’t change or ruin the character it’s just neutral on that point
Jabba leads to Han Solo. Han Solo leads to Greedo. Greedo leads to Maclunkey. Maclunkey leads to suffering... suffering leads to the Dark Side...
I honestly don't mind the last change as they both fired at the same time and in every version Han was always going to kill Greedo whether he shot first or not.
See if greedo was a bounty hunter you would have thought he could have hit solo at point blank range, for me they spoiled the whole scene with the edits on later versions of film was nothing wrong with original.
If Greedo shoots first Han would be dead, that's why the original version where Han is the only one who shot is better, because it is impossible for a bounty hunter like Greedo to miss a shot.

I'm a complete star wars casual and the weird Alien dude is threatening him
Its manslaughter applied to a butt ugly Alien who's asking for it, Threatening Han Solo over the results of a gambling debt (?) on an Alien Planet that appears to have a skewered view of morality, based on the stuff we see in this movie and the prequels (I know, retcon reeeee)
With that said, I'd love to know why this is anything more than an after thought. There's nothing morally wrong with killing that Alien in this scene, much less when it's brushing its teeth (?) in the morning just for fun.
Thanks guys!
If you listen to this with headphones, you'll really notice how every post-1997 sound mix sounds worse. The cantina ambiance becomes so much more muffled.
Less discussed than "Did Han shoot first?" is "Did Han shoot twice?". In the original version there is one blast, apparently fired from under the table. In every subsequent version you can see two quick blaster bolts shoot out of Han's gun, although there is one blast on impact. Only in the 2019 version is there one bolt.
So the 1997 version really was "Greedo shot first", and the later versions re-fixed it by letting the two shoot at the same time. That's at least something I guess.
So sad tho
If Greedo shoots first Han would be dead, that's why the original version where Han is the only one who shot is better, because it is impossible for a bounty hunter like Greedo to miss a shot.

My knowledge of Star Wars only goes as far as bare basics, the Bounty Hunter game, and Clone Wars series. What is Maclunkey?
Original and 2011 are both pretty good
Don't worry, all will be corrected with the Disney reboot that's coming. Han won't even be in the movie.
D+ might have them fire on the same frame, but Maclunkey is close to “You’re dead” in Huttese, meaning Han had a warning and therefore had reason to fire immediately. They STILL haven’t committed to letting Han just be a jerk in this scene

I have to ask what's the difference between the 2004 and 2011 versions?
What does Macklunky mean. I remember reading what it means somewhere but I am not sure it is right.
I am wondering what that last line Greedo says in the 2019 version is? It doesn't appear in the other versions.
He said Maclunkey and I have no idea what it means. Just another pointless change lol
Does anybody remember a crime drama t v show where a guy was quoting the scene
He says you know.
What this reminds me of.
That green Feller from Star Wars. You see han solo shot first but then they changed it so that the green guy shot first I was wondered why they changed it and I thought maybe it was because they wanted to Give the green guy a chance.
In the next one Greedo will try to shoot, his gun will jam and Han will say:
"So you wanted to kill me right? Well, see those pictures? Yes, that's your family. I mean, it was, because you don't have one anymore, but now, why don't you join them"
To which Greedo responds: "Mcluncky!!"
And Han shoots him
