Why does my car jump when I change gears? You'll understand after watching this and it only takes a little practise to get your gear changes smooth every time. It mainly comes down to the fact that your cars speed is too high when you change gear but if it's too low your engine will stall.

This is the exact video I needed! Thank you. I was doing it wrong - just like you say here where I brake to 15 mph and then let go of the brake and push down the clutch to change it down to second gear....this explains exactly why I haven't been able to get it right. I simply could never get to a low enough speed for making a turn, so always felt a bit out of control. I need to STAY ON THE BRAKE during the whole thing :D

Thanks for the video, Paul. I want to suggest a video idea. How to downshift without slowing down. For example, when you need more power to pass somebody on a country lane, or to go uphill.

I've been known to rush the clutch release, I'll use your method then I can lol.

    Great advice as always.
How about mentioning rev-matching as well? :) Or is that technique a bit too complicated or disallowed for new learners?

This video helped a lot. What if I need to slow down to drive at around 17-20mph through a village centre with poor visibility, do I stay in 3rd even if the car feels like it's struggling a bit? It's not really a low enough speed to change down into 2nd comfortably.

In that case you can lift the clutch a little slower than usual. It's not good practice to take too long to lift the clutch but there is another method you can use that I'll cover in a future video.

The jumpy banger car brand you are referring to has to be Vauxhall right ? ;)

A video won't help, you just get it with practice.

    How about block change ?

Yes, it works for that. I do 6 down to 1 or 2 using this method.

What about rev matching? I know what car you mean that jolts no matter what you do

I thought you were gonna talk about rev matching 🤔 maybe that's not considered an officially approved driving technique?

You have to keep in mind that learner drivers are his target audience. Rev-matching is a more advanced technique that would be too complicated for the vast majority of learner drivers.

So the secret is to brake enough for the desired speed
