This kind of video is exactly what I needed to see, just some real driving so I know what to emulate on the day of the exam / adjust my own driving habits going forward. Mind you, I drove a lot in Brazil and yeah, don't drive like you at all, so plenty to learn here. The ADI I got is...not that good, maybe too stuck on his ways when teaching new drivers? Would you be able make a video in detail of you doing a "mock" driving test and you are the learner attempting the test with the "driving instructor" to go into a detail walkthrough of the test from theory to the end. So learner drivers know what to expect on the day. The 'ism" Irish school of motoring made a video a number of years ago on CZcams, a walkthrough of the driving test. But I was wondering could you do your own version of the topic. Thanks for the informative videos. Happy driving!!

    Great Video, watching this after my instructor said I shouldn't learn manual as I drive too slow and stay in 2 - 3d gear max as have quite low awareness of what speed i should be in for a gear. I have just completed EDT and had no practice outside of this but their suggestion makes me think I am impossible to teach :( I learn in Wexford so stress of tight and bendy roads are always there, shame I didn't found a clearer guidance on which gear to choose when (I know that if revs go up i need to go up the gears, but I have no idea when to go down) before my confidence was knocked off completely

    Hi Dane, your videos are a great help in preparing me for my test on Monday! I'm driving a Fiat 500 and on my dashboard it tells me when to change gears. Its roughly change gears every 10 km/h. So anything above 10 km/h should be in second gear and everything above 20km/h should be in 3rd and so on. Should I follow this and change gears when it tells me too or should I follow your advice? I sometimes find that dropping to second gear for larger roundabouts I can hear the engine too much. Thanks so much for the great videos!

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 2 lety +3

      It does depend on the car, all cars are different. Try not to be looking at the dash too much because you need to be focused on the road ahead. You shouldn't need the cars technology to tell you when to go up and down gears.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před rokem +1

      There is no specific gear for overtaking, it will depend on the situation and what speed and gear you're driving at prior to the overtaking manoeuvre. Each situation needs to be treated individually, there's no generic one size fits all answer to the question. Best wishes, glad you found the videos useful and informative 🎊

    Hi Dane, thanks for sharing the video. I have a question in this video 23:11:When you are approading the roundabout and you changed the gear to 1 as you needed to yeild to the traffic on your right hand side, you took the 1st exit and you changed the gear to 2 after you exit the roundabout.
    Usually we need to get in the roundabout with 2nd gear, but sometimes we have to stop at the roundabout and yield on comming the traffic on the right, in this case when could be the best time to change the gear to 2nd gear ? Some says that it's not the best idea to change the gear when turning the steering wheel, but we have to turn the wheel when we are in the roundabout. If we stay on 1st gear, will we lose marks? (1st gear stopping only if the traffic is busy but mostly the roundabouts near test center are busy) looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 2 lety

      That depends on the individual roundabout but a good confident driver will have no problem changing gear as they are turning the wheel, it'll be fine if you are driving slowly enough to maintain control.

I'm Just wondering, when you stop at a stop sign or traffic lights do you have to use your handbrake or is it perfectly okay to use your brake pedal? And also is it okay to go into neutral gear and then pull up handbrake when using it?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks very much, you should use the handbrake if you are stopped on a hill or over 5 seconds, it's usually better to wait in first gear so you are ready to move off. You could just use your brake pedal for a short stop but not long stops. Check out this video on using the handbrake.

    This lockdown drive me crazy, i bought a car just before this storm start and now I'm stuck as my instructor don't do lessons anymore, the good part is that i drive it myself with my friend at work and I improve every day, the main problem i have at the moment is downgear, i keep getting different answers and it drives me crazy, each time i go from 4th to 2th the car shake, can't describe the feeling, what i usually do is i slow down till around 20km/h and i switch from 4th to 2th, some friends say i take my feet from the clutch to fast some say i should give it a little gas before i release the clutch, i got like 10 answers so far

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 4 lety

      First of all try lifting your clutch very slow when dropping gears. If you slow down first and then drop to 2nd gear it should be better - especially if you lift the clutch very slowly.

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive Wow, thank you very much for replay, pleasant surprise, my problem with this is im keep getting paranoia that if i do this on exam day i will fail for coasting

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 4 lety +1

      Coasting is when you press the clutch in for too long, if you're aware of this then it should not be allowed to happen. I always try to advise people to go down the gears one by one because I think it is more gradual and you are less likely to cause the car to jump. It is also very important to be braking at the same time as you are changing down the gears - especially when you are going down the hill- this video will explain more.
      czcams.com/video/s7QjfXslfm0/video.html
      But as long as you slow down first and the come off the clutch slower after the gear changes you should be fine.

  • @ketchup5344
    @ketchup5344 Před 5 lety +2

    I must admit, I select nutral at traffic lights-and use handbrake- rather than hold down the clutch and wait in first gear, unless or until lights are about to change then I'll select first. My car has quite a heavy clutch so I like to work this way. Im assuming thats not a test "fail" 👀

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 5 lety +2

      That's fine, you can do it that way if you want but I prefer to be ready in first gear to be able to move away quicker, it's not a fail doing it your way. I don't work on the basis of what some random tester thinks is a fail or not, I operate on the basis of good safe and practical driving for life, not just a once off test.

      I wouldn't completely rule out that as a potential idea for a future video but it's not really that complicated. Just study the rules of the road, do lots of practice with the theory test CD, book the theory test online and pass it with at least 35 out of 40 questions correct. If you fail repeat until successful.

The important thing is to be aware of oncoming vehicles and giving enough room to the stationary vehicles.

    At 6:25 and 7:30 when u went down a gear, did u slow down using the brake, or did u just take your foot off the accelerator? And when u were going uphill at 6:25 and went from 3rd to 2nd, u had to slow down momentarily to avoid a jerk, won't the car behind u get annoyed? I remember going up a steep hill and having to slow down a bit to go from 3rd to 2nd (I was in 3rd gear at the beginning, then decided 3rd was too weak), and hoping the car behind me wasn't too close. Also, parts of these Irish towns (or are u in Scotland?) are picturesque!

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 5 lety +2

      At 6.25 I did slow down slightly and drop a gear as I was approaching a sharp bend as it was the appropriate and safe thing to do. I couldn't care less what the car behind me was thinking (I can't even remember if there was a car behind me) as I've more important issues to be dealing with as opposed to second guessing what the person behind me may or may not be thinking. People need to drive based on the conditions in front of them and react accordingly, if it's a bend all cars will have to slow down to some degree anyway.
      And yes all these videos are made in Ireland, mostly in Wexford in the Southeast but also a few in Dublin and Cork, this particular video was when I was in East Cork last week in the towns of Cóbh and Middleton.

      The automatic handbrake is absolutely fine, I've never heard of a tester asking anyone to turn off the auto hold.
