This video had help me I wrote down all the tip so I can get a better understanding of my world for my comic/manga
@@Kingsmoove5423 Super happy to hear that!! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a nice comment! I really appreciate it!! Best of luck with your comic!
@@MonitorComics As neat as this video is, it doesn't help me with the actual designing of the world I am hoping to make. Do you think you could help me out? If so, I'll send an invite to my Discord server where I am trying to get a manga started. I will need all the help I can get.
is there anything more on the map comment?
@@MonitorComics I am still in highschool, but I have already thought of an idea for an animated series I want to make. Do you think these concepts and laws can apply to a film medium, or are they slightly different?
‘One piece’ and ‘tower of god’ s world building is insane and what I aspire to be able to create, or at least create something half as good
Happy to see someone say Tower Of God and I know this isn’t much I believe you’ll be able to create something as good 👍🏾
made in abyss > tower of god
Avatar, Warhammer 40k, Lord of the Rings, Game of thrones, Wheel of Time and Mistborn are all amazing as well.
@@namiboy787 Nah
@@namiboy787 No one but you brought up MIA. I like them both but there’s so reason to state your opinion here
So the Conclusion Tips
1. Choose your World
2. Where to Started the Story
3. Created the Laws
4. Created the Places
5. Created the Cultures
6. Ways of Speaking
7. Write the Worlds History
8. What's Your Characters Act
9. Take all Cliches and make it your own
10. Build your World Slow and Clever
One idea that I propose to all aspiring writers is to KEEP IT SUPER SIMPLE. Most people will watch a video like this and get bogged down under all the details and feel the need to micromanage them. When you keep your world building simple, it makes your overall story easier to understand, and everything else falls into place.
Great advice! Thank you for taking the time to share your insight!
Yeah I agree. I personally don’t like reading or watching stuff that have super confusing worlds. If you are making a world in a story, explain things about the world little by little and keep it concise and simple to understand
World Building in One Piece are so amazing and great that most people wanna lived in that world. Also the concept of freedom and civilization are wonderful in One Piece
DUDE- I WANNA BE IN ONE PIECE SO BAD.
Idk anymore depends on where you live I guess cuz one piece would be ass 💀
yeah imaging being a normal height dude and find out some "people" are over 10 ft tall I would be terrified
I wanna live in hxh or pokemon world
@@idkanymore4664 u would not. u would get raided by pirates all the time or you would live in poverty under the corrupt government. if u were a pirate u would most likely die from the marines or against other pirates. it’s still cool tho.
World Building TIp: Learn from One Piece.
FACT
One Piece: King of world building
HxH: King of power systems
Jojo: King of unique character designs
You might as well call JoJo King of Visual Style/Artistic Sense and One Piece King of Long Term Storytelling.
@@abylaiashken2611 I think berserk has the best art imo
@@luucid5734 Yes, Berserk is a king of art. What I meant is that JoJo has very strong visual idendity cause frequently the color swap happens to fit specific mood.
jojos character design is trash
@@abylaiashken2611 i think the climber has best art
One Piece is the King of Worldbuilding.
TRUE
I’m a huge One Piece fan but O gotta say Toriko does a really good job too.
Unrivaled
@@julfikarsheikh1478 You’re entitled to your opinion but Naruto is nowhere near the king.
@@julfikarsheikh1478 I have watched the anime. It’s been a long time so I won’t speak on it too much but I don’t ever see people bring up the world building.
Mushoku Tensei is a top tier when it comes to worldbuilding. from episode 1 the entire world just feels so real and interesting, and the creator of the manga even developed 2 different languages to fit in his story.
FOR REAL. MUSHOKU TENSEI IS S TIER
@@MonitorComics It's S tier when it comes to story and characters, but in worldbuilding I think, it's more on the generic side of isekai anime/manga. You could easily put the characters in another similar world and they would do the same. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful world but not as good as OP or Made in Abyss in my opinion.
@@blackharmonics4518 Compared to the majority of "starter town medieval town" isekai stories, Mushoku Tensei has a MUCH MORE fleshed out world
I would personally say its FAR from generic. Most isekai series barely leave the starter town and if they do they just go to a generic forest, king's palace, etc
I do agree that series like Made In Abyss have great worldbuilding. But at the end of the day, Made in Abyss is a fantasy series, so we should hope it has a cool world
When it comes to Isekai the expectations are EXCEEDINGLY LOW because of all of the generic titles to come out in recent years.
It definitely helps that Mushoku Tensei was one of the earlier light novels that took off around the time as The Familiar of Zero, WAY before the SAO isekai boom
@@MonitorComics Yes, I absolutely agree. Compared to other isekai titles out there, Mushoku Tensei is waaaaay above the others.
Maybe it's not fair to compare it to straight fantasy titles like MiA.
I really love MT, because of the characters and the storytelling, pace, etc. And it is really nice to see an isekai character actually travel around instead of just make a base in the spawn town. MT is one of the few anime I really appreciated the last few years (MiA is still my absolute no. 1 title)
@@blackharmonics4518 For sure! I don't know if you watched my recent video about Isekai anime, but its really interesting to think about how old MT is
A lot of modern isekai authors credit MT for inspiring a lot of the character archetypes, story tropes, etc in modern Isekai anime
It's really surprising how many of those series dont try to replicate the GOOD aspects though like trying to build a unique world, or making an interesting plotline or engaging characters
I have no clue why so many isekai series copy each other creating the same generic "story" over and over again
Small correction: Code Geass isn't a manga series. It's an anime original
yeah ur right but the anime got adapted to manga
You're right! I forgot that the manga came after. Thank you for correcting me!
Wait really?!
@@MonitorComics wait there is a manga of code geass?
@@SamuraiGintoki4 Yes! After poking around I think there were about 5 different manga spin offs that came out after the anime
AOT and one piece has best world building
TRUE. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
Aot has 3 walls underground city ocean and another town in the other side ain't so special
@@footy743 how is it not special?
@@eunoiaaa_ tell me how 3 walls underground city ocean and another city is so special
@@footy743 Titans inside walls. 50km walls that protect people. I think the underground aint special tho. But imagine you think ppl outside the walls are extinct. Then theres that Island lmao.
Im bad at english soooo... im bad at explaining this.
One Piece and Made in Abyss are the most immersive worlds I've seen in fictional works yet. Both worlds want you to explore them and unscramble all the mysteries. They are not disposable locations where the characters do their thing, they are actually relevant to the story. You can't put the characters of these works into another world and expect to equally unfold themselves (well, maybe you could do that with Riko, because she loves to explore everything, but it wouldn't be the same without the Abyss). It's only possible in these respective worlds. And not only does it matter what the todays characters do... it's equally important and is a major motivation for our beloved characters, what the past characters did and why they did it.
I love these works.
One Piece is the ideal when worldbuilding.
TRUE
Nope. One piece world is just bigger, not better.
People mistake those two things. Like people in the comments really compare One Piece to LOTR lol. In my opinion, even Naruto is as well as one piece :
There is lore, myths (Rikudo), past events and war that are important for the present of the story (like the ninja wars), war heroes and mythical characters as well, geopolitique (kage cousil), a power system based on chakra, dead civilisation as well (like the Uzumaki clan) etc...
Naruto’s world seems real and is pretty well developed throughout the story.
I don’t see what One piece does so much better.
Are there different languages in One piece for exemple ?
@@MartialArtsTechniquesideas stop downplaying one piece just because you like naruto.all of those things are in one piece and more, plus they are fleshed out more.
@@sinsfast5435 if you were paying attention you would see that I’m not downplaying One piece. I’m just saying that many manga as are good at world building including Naruto. But you are probably too fan to understand this kind of shades.
You can’t say bs like "One piece is the best" just because there are a bunch of animal humans and a bit of geopolitics. It’s as good as the other, not better.
@@sinsfast5435 what is done better in One piece lol ?
Thank you for another great video! Appreciate it. Btw, would it be fine if you can make a detailed video on how to get your manga published on saturday am?
Thank you for taking the time to check out this video and leaving a nice comment! As far as Saturday AM goes, there isn't really a secret. I just entered the March Art Madness contest and they learned my name. I didn't make it far I got knocked out in round 2. Then I applied for the Summer of Manga Competition and got accepted. My one-shot ran in issue 106 and they assigned me an editor and asked me to create a series for them. It was pretty straightforward, just take advantage of their submission events and contests! Best of luck!
The worldbuilding for Houseki no Kuni is absolutely one of my favourites
From Gems formed to fight Lunarians to protect themselves and eachother with it's history of the possible extinction of Humans and how the Admirabilis were there to witness the evolution of it all. And how the story would end up back at the very beginning of one creating a human once again. It all connects into something and even for a small type of worldbuilding it has so much meaning and depth to it and I hope one day I'll be able to create such a great world like this.
0:32 oh cool! I've really needed these types of videos! The inking stuff i mean. Thanks for the sponsor man!
Thanks for the video Monitor, I really need tips like these xd. In terms of my world building in my story it’s like the United States but if it was broken up into Islands (it serves an incredibly important part in the story but I’m still having trouble designing the islands).
Sounds awesome Rekter! Thank you for your continued support I really appreciate it!!
@@MonitorComics No problem! You always have the best tips when it comes down to both story and art so thank you for the helpful videos!
Hey reketer start a blog for practice even I did
For my anime world no pictures like a book
Sounds amazing honestly dude
For the story that I was writing, I had a story I was really happy with (still wip)
but I realised I didn't have an amazing world, I took the setting of traditional Asia but that was it. I knew I wanted a fantasy world but I didn't know what to do.
So for me (and for you), here's some advice or guides:
- if you are lost on what to do, try exploring a perspective or theme, and then personifying it into a location.
- you generally already have a setting in mind, but if you don't, just work on the story until it comes to you
- Take the rules, systems, and laws of your world and make systems to fit them (example from attack on titan: big titans, how do we kill them, their napes, how do we get there, verticality, how do we do that, spiderman gear(because flying looks goofy and isn't technologically possible) boom, military equipment that is a staple for how characters traverse the world and survive in it) (I only just realised that he talks about aot in the video now I don't feel unique)
- Taking inspiration is a good thing don't be scared of it.
- History is your friend, there is so much more than medieval Europe, decide your tone and think of what personality it has and what setting would be best to sample
- culture and politics are great for deciding alliances and enemies
that's all I have, feel free to add more or thank me cause I'm an incredible person
Thank you
great video, I would like to add that picking if your starting from your characters or your world is a big difference of how you design your setting
Could you go a bit more into detail for others who might be curious? Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and leave a comment I really appreciate it!
@@MonitorComics yeah of course. I was talking about how there tend to be two starting points for world design. one being based around your MC and other characters. Where you start smaller and build out filling in what you need. the second method being larger design into a smaller design. where you design around larger events and fill in characters later on.
@@niceguy66alain Great points! Thank you for taking the time to elaborate!

@@MonitorComics You're welcome :D
I want to achieve a worldbuilding as good as One Piece and Tower of God (my favorites).
I love the concept of the main story of TOG being set in a GIANT tower, divided into three parts with unique floors and rulers for each one, that keeps the order. Each floor also has a density of Shinsu (TOG's "mana" and substitute of water and oxygen in the tower) that gets stronger as you climb the tower. There's a lot more about the TOG world too, but it's a lot to explain here.
But my favorite is still One Piece, I love how bizarre and creative some islands are. Screw normal places, let's make an island made of Cake. Also, the concept of the OP world being divided by the red line, grand line and calm belt is really interesting and gives opportunity for crazy but pausible theories.
My only fear is that I make a world so big that my story ends up taking years to finish (which is the case of TOG and OP) lmao. Great video!! :]
Having it take years means it's gonna be well thought out and enjoyable
Good luck with your project .. sounds very exciting
Same! I love tog’s world building a lot ✨
I actually made several concept arts about the world of my own fan made manga I'll make very soon. I'm doing it on paper as I don't have the hardware and software to go digital yet (plus my budget is meh) but I started out with a map regarding all the regions of this world (kind of like AOT in which the world map is basically like our world but with the world map upside down and inverted). Thanks for these tips btw!
Sounds awesome! Best of luck!

One Piece is the best in world building in fantasy and scaling of mechanics. It is not completely perfect but one of the best there is for shounen. It has nearly everything that meshes super well together and scales really well and stays consistent to itself.

@@MonitorComics You're welcome. I'm not the most alert reader and have been trying to understand worldbuilding in stories. It's something I find hard to see in many shows and wonder if it's my fault for not being able to see it. I've asked for suggestions before but getting told to go and read the entire State Wars and LOTR collection isn't really the most pleasant experience. These and One Piece are also franchises where the worldbuilding is very pronounced in my opinion. It made me wonder if worldbuilding exists in every/the majority of the non-fantastical shows.
Thank you for the Slice of Life example tho, my favorite SoL, March Comes In Like a Lion has the main character constantly switching from one fictionalized irl Japanese location to another which are labeled as month towns (March city, June town).
@@Eterrath All good! I'm glad my video could be helpful! And I love March Comes In Like A Lion lol. Worldbuilding does exist in every story. Some stories like those in the adventure or fantasy genre tend to capitalize on it the most. With slice of lives for example you could worldbuild by having several locations like you said (school, home, friends home, town over, beach, amusement park, local cafe, etc)!

Best piece of worldbuilding is the world itself
Good point! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
One Piece has the best worldbuilding I’ve ever seen, recommend me some stuff which is comparable to it. A Sky Island above a skull, the 3 marine headquarters, one of which is in the middle of a giant waterfall, random giant human-like monsters near Thriller Bark which have not been explained for 12 years now, a country of toys, a kitty pirate who is actually a cyborg revolutionist. Brilliant stuff.
Toriko
unrelated but im obsessed with the way u say past
LOL thank you! That’s the first time someone has ever complimented me for that haha
Something to add which was something I've learned along the way in terms of worldbuilding in regards to your own story: 'build the character within the world, don't build the world around a character'. It sounds like common sense but this is partly how to avoid creating mary sue characters while creating a more believable setting as well making your characters 'fit' into the world.
And if I'm being honest, world anvil discord taught me a lot about the subtleties of worldbuilding and how to keep the information open to new possibilities instead of making something so specific. Like with One Piece, Oda most certainly did not create the entire thing from the very start. He built up on it over time as he went through the story to a point he has such an extensive worldbuilding that works within the context of the story. The lesson to get out from that is not to go overboard with worldbuilding especially when you're trying to write a story because the rest of the tips on this video goes naturally as you progressed through it.
But yes, maps. Make a map. As someone who does too much worldbuilding and not enough writing, maps are your bestfriend with worldbuilding. Even just blobs of where things go is enough to start off with.
Amazing advice! Thanks for taking the time to share all of that!!
Subbed.
Thank you so much!
Thanks

One Piece, the PINNACLE of world building for me. Absolutley amazing. Hje only one I can think of that rivaled it is Toriko. Too bad it got axed or ended because it too was amazing
Great choices! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Agree about toriko
@@rajsaha7885 One piece and Toriko, best world building
Thank you, Monitor Comics! Trying to Worldbuild is new to me, so I needed a video like this! I'm still learning, so I might just look at this again as a reference!

@@MonitorComics Thank u very much. Hope you will soon reach 1 Million Subs
Another amazing example of world building is star wars. There's a reason so many people love it
I got a good one, a world where the main character with other unknown people get kidnapped to a facility providing soldiers for the war outside and the main cast figures out the meaning of their training and try to escape to freedom
How did you get better at digital art? I want to start making comic but I don’t know how or what to do and I personal suck at any backgrounds so I’m scared it would be appealing I’m not the best at art but I’ve came up with so many different stories and I want to put some out there
When It comes to world building, I can't get enough of one piece, legend of Zeld, and elden ring
An anime I think has great worldbuilding is Fullmetal Alchemist, everything makes sense and generally feels like a believeable world.
FACTS. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
@@MonitorComics no problem!
Idk why I was recommend this but ok pretty useful
LOL I'm happy you decided to watch it and enjoyed it!
Hey. @Monitor Comics, I'm planning on writing a manga that involves a lot of death of characters. Do you think you could explain how to make emotions in writing feel more natural? The manga has the main character face the death of his younger brother. I've tried writing out storyboards of how I want the death scene to go. But it feels so artificial when I try to write it, do you have any tips or advice for writing scenes like this in stories?
Can you make a vid about characters personality?
I will add it to the list of upcoming topics! Thank you for taking the time to leave a video suggestion!

Naruto is a great example of engaging world building
Naruto Shippuden is a great example of how to utterly destroy your world building
Got us in the first half
LOL
Suficiente.
In my opinion, JoJo has one aspect that makes its worldbuilding very interesting and that can be studied: The Invisible Force of Fate (Later Flow). Fate/Flow are inseparable from JoJo, as even some stands and stories don't work without it, like King Crimson, Rolling Stones, Wonder of U, Heaven Plan, Kira's BTD and his downfall.
Stands also bring a lot for JoJo's world as Stands initial purpose is to explain records of supernatural activity like ESP, Gods, or Yokai.
However, not everything is a stand as Ghost alley, Ghosts, and other paranormal activity exist.
Great points! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and adding onto the discussion!
Sorry but Jojo has no worldbuilding full stop Araki makes shit up with no planning at all, worldbuildingn isn’t jojo strong point
@@rcnemesis7645 didn't care I addressed my point
@@abylaiashken2611 And you point doesn't make sense, jojo doesn't even hvae worldbuilding or any interesting worldbuilding in that matter, dude, since Araki basically makes shit up as he goes without much regard for consistency.
Worldbuilding is a mess, like How did Dio even find out about the whole stand ascension thing. Vampires after Dio Death are non-existant like I said Araki makes things up without any care for consistency,
The whole Giorno being the boss of an italia-wide gang thing is never mentioned again after it happens, or even the events of Rome in part 5. Little explaination to the alien virus
Your trying to exaggerate one of Jojo bizarre strong points, it's worldbuilding is kinda shit and messy and have no consistency at all
Literally any Jojo Bizarre fans would agree that worldbuilding is non-existent
Can you make a video about forshadowing
I'll add it to the list! Thanks for taking the time to leave a video suggestion!
TORIKO is one of the best Worldbuilding in anime and manga history
Yeah, it's on par with One piece
Anyone else get excited when they saw magi in the beginning??
I’m not creative at all and don’t have much of a passion for storytelling or art so probably never gonna need this but thanks I will use this to make my unoriginal brain a little better
Glad this video could help! Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Best of luck!
@@MonitorComics thanks
Nah man, u just gonna have to take that pen, and sit everyday drawing atleast for 30 mins, like that Ur creativity and art will improve, and maybe, you make a manga or comic one day
