    for me if you want them to have a relatability write an everyman character.i don't do relatability and more just a character taught to believe a lie.and goes over the whole story to improve that lie.they should be motivated by that lie realising that is wrong and other improve the motivation,change it or add more motivations mixed in.make sure that there is always failure,and pushing through and they dont stand by to wait for others to do things for them

      @@MonitorComics i actually think flat static more 2d characters are more relatable than most 3d round dynamic characters that are more fictional feeling by default and virtue of being more of a plot world shaker and developed/progressive and changed by the end and usually they effect the plot and world way too much to be relateable like they become bigger than life heroes usually or important and thats not who most of us reading are..which is sometimes fine cause its nice to look up to someone or have a role model or see their success and be proud to know them but its not relateable...like sorry but most people do not change or grow that much or have that much sway on others or the world or get that popular./important...they stay who they were at 21 at age 33...like sure teens may have some growth and kids for sure do as you age into adulthood but even then it does not happen over night or over a year or two..it takes time...and we do not have big dreams like that..most of us are simple...we are aiming low...

    How to make a character relatable:
    "My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone."

  • @asdadd6304
    @asdadd6304 Před 2 lety +13

    One thing I tried developing myself. I took the idea of layering characters and created a diagram. The top layer is the surface layer, aka how they seem and act to any regular person, as decribed in this video. But it is also how people view the character generally, such as if they're admirable, hard-working or the opposite if they are hated and discriminated against. This would also include their professional outlook and how they think of business acquaintances and work in general along with their professional outlook. This could be if they are lazy, serious, dedicated, a procrastinator etc.
    The next layer I did was the friends layer, or how they act in the company of people they enjoy being with. This is the best place I think to add their sense of humour, and their friendship dynamic within a group.
    Now, there are 2 more layers. The family layer, or how they act in the presence of family or relatives, along with siblings/ love interests, along with how those people think of them. This is the place to put deep flaws that stick out when with family, such as any trauma that can resurface, insecurities and coping mechanisms, eg- pushing people they care about away to keep them safe.
    The final, deepest layer is the layer of self, or how they think of themselves and the part of themselves that is deeply repressed and that they show nobody. This can include their deepest, darkest impulses, desires, secrets etc, but also their true personality traits, or what truly makes up their heart and mind, and what they define themselves as.
    Between each layer, you can separate them with a line. This line can be thin or thick depending on if they wear their heart on their sleeve, or if its extremely difficult to get through to them. The characters which get attached easy, for example treat friends and family as the same, would have a very thin line between those layers. The same would go if they make friends extremely easily, but keep family isolated and separate. For the self, as a general rule that should be the thickest line simply because that is what their true face is, which they show nobody except the very few closest ones.
    Now, bear in mind I am a HUGE amateur when it comes to this stuff, but I found that it is extremely helpful when writing very complicated and complex characters that are vague and ambiguous when it comes to pinpointing their personalities and what that includes. It also definitely helps because it is completely separate from a backstory, so if your character has a very deep backstory that has a huge impact on their personality, I found it can be really helpful. Hope that helps, feel free to give any pointers.

    After his funeral he reawakens as a zombie and finds someone to live with.
    However, both the terrorist organization and the agency want the agent.

    Hi Monitorcomics!! Congrates on hitting 5k followers!
    I have a question: is character development necessary for most or all of the main cast?
    And also for my main oc for the webtoon I'm working on, i was wondering how I'd properly develop his character arc cause what he's been through in the past, he's develop trust issues and kind of cloesd of from the people he'll meet later on. How should he resolve this?

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  Před 3 lety +9

      Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Personally, I feel like character development is necessary for at least SOME of your characters. When you think of the bigger picture, stuff has to happen in a story lol. From that standpoint, I feel like AT SOME POINT your character is going to change a bit. It doesn't have to be major, like if there's a story about a kid who wants to be a knight. Chapter 1 could be him picking up the sword. Chapter 20 could be his training under a real master after using it randomly. In chapter 50 he becomes an actual knight and can train others. Although his personality didn't change that much, he definitely matured and became more developed. As far as your webtoon goes, I think it's important to explicitly show how closed off your character is. Maybe he only monologues internally and uses one-word answers. Maybe his body language shows that he doesn't want to be interacting with these people. This will set your starting point. Maybe another one of your characters is super friendly and peppy. By having this character constantly bring your main character out of his comfort zone, he'll be forced to deal with his flaws. In doing so, he might learn how to deal with certain situations differently as time goes on. For something mental like that, I think it's important to develop your character slowly. Maybe have them have recurring nightmares about the past events that caused them to be closed off. Maybe in the middle of your story when your character has started making some strides to change, they are reintroduced to their trauma. For example, a character from his past reappears, forcing the main character to revert back to square one. After you resolve that storyline they'll come out even more mature. That could be the moment where your character's outlook finally changes for the better. Those are just some ideas, hopefully, that helped!

    I've worked on and off on a western comic inspired by assyrian/middle eastern folklore. Sort of like Hellboy meets Arabian Nights This really came in handy since my MC seemed too heroic. Then it hit me... I wrote this character as a homage to Christian Arabs who struggled with assimilating with the growing muslim society. Ergo like you mentioned making his angle focused on feeling like an outsider no matter what he did.

In that video you make reference to the big three - you’ve since mentioned believing that the things that worked at the time those stories were created may not work so much anymore - a sentiment I believe full-heartedly, if you were to look at newer works and reevaluate the 3 chapter rule using them as examples I would really love to see if you’d change your take on that or at least other ways in which approaching the opening of a story may be applicable by the tastes of the 2021 audience :)

    I think that instead of breaking out of Character maybe have it be make your character a bit more "mysterious" were he is not 2d nor does he seem 2d and he is 3d but show him doing things that relate to that point and then ahve him break out of character with foreshadowing and it fighting his character although staying in character. I'm wondering if that fits the point and would like to hear others opinions on the idea.

    In regards to the surface layer of a character and their design how do I make a character stand out and look cool but without looking out of place and messy? I have npticed my characters' clothing and hair styles can often look either bland or rediculous (which may just indicate I need to practice my general art skills in said areas) but I was wondering if you had any advice or general tips to create memorable character designs without the character looking totally stupid.

    Great video! I just found your channel recently and I love the idea of making my own comic/manga but I don't consume a lot of the medium and try to learn from these videos so this has really helped me out!
    Currently I'm thinking about two different projects, one about a mythical animal rescue and rehabilitation center, and the other a magical girl/boy based one. Although I'm struggling with the latter as I want it to have some unique spin compared to other manga, comics or anime in the genre but I'm not sure how exactly... Do you think you'll cover about how to write magical girl/boy manga/comic?

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of this! Everybody starts somewhere, so it's good you're diving in headfirst to learn more! I actually really like your mythical animal rescue idea. That sounds super unique and could be really interesting. The only thing similar I can think of is an anime airing THIS season coincidentally, called Heaven's Design Team. That show is a comedy about a design team in heaven creating the appearance of the animals that appear on Earth. It's pretty rare when an idea only has one other property to compare it to, so I would stick with that idea and really flesh it out! As far as your suggestion goes, I can definitely make a video covering magical girl/boy stories! I personally enjoy them but have been unsure if my viewers would be interested lol. I'll add it to my list though! Best of luck!

    Thanks for the information I have a question to ask I'm about to Enter college and I'm wondering what type of major to pick to help me with making mangas and comics

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  Před 3 lety +2

      Hello! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment I really appreciate it! Honestly, I would major in whatever you're passionate about because most things can end up helping you with making comics and manga.
      Art classes are never a bad option if you're the artistic type. Fine Arts Majors pretty much learn the fundamentals of art and practice realism and anatomy and stuff like that. For comics knowing how to draw is important so this is a route you could take.
      An Animation major is also a cool option because animation is more stylized. Animation is a process similar to comic making. You focus mostly on sequential art and creating original characters. I personally don't like the actual animation part of animation but the preproduction (scripting, character design, etc) are enjoyable because its similar to making comics
      English or Creative Writing majors are also cool because you have to know how to write to make good comics and manga. By studying story structure and stuff like that you might get a leg up when its time to make a comic
      Photography and Video majors are also cool because you learn the importance of composition and framing. When you are making a comic you are pretty much a camera director. In photography, you will learn different camera angles, visual storytelling techniques, and different lighting setups. These could all be handy for comics and manga
      And finally, Graphic Design is always cool. You pretty much learn how to use digital art software like Photoshop to make logos, posters, and other advertisement graphics. If you take product design and web design you can also learn a few other cool skills. Graphic design also teaches the importance of typography. In comics, we call it lettering.
      Overall, I'd just choose whatever you're into. Most of the information you would gain from these classes can be gained online so don't be afraid to search up some of this stuff and study it on your own time.
      Hope that could help! Best of luck with college and your project!

    I have to disagree with Deku. Yes, being vulnerable is a good trait for a character to have, but I don't feel related to Deku because despite the fact he is vulnerable because of his dream to be a hero and believe he can become one even without powers, he doesn't do literally anything to prove that and only writes in his journal and studying heroes that ONLY actually came to fruition once he even got powers. He also only actually decided to train after being promised powers by All-Might. I guarantee you he would have just quit on his own without being promised that. Yes, he did prove to All-Might that he was heroic enough and decided to give him his power, but that still doesn't change the fact that Deku would have still done nothing if All-Might didn't make that choice on his own. Also Deku has a VERY bad knack of seeing only black and white in a character yet it's in the worst possible time when he does see that grey area. Like there have been many heroes that have done things that are actually understandable in why they became a villain, yet Deku tells them they are wrong mostly from the fact that they are villains and "villains equal bad". Yet when it comes time for Deku to actually understand someone who has had a troubled past, it happens once they have literally wiped out an entire city, and has killed MANY of Deku's friends and mentors, and despite that Deku wants to help this person and SAVE them, despite the fact a normal human would be mad as all hell. Like it's noble, yeah, but that isn't relatable.
    That is the FURTHEST thing from relatability.

  • @Zeon081
    @Zeon081 Před 3 lety +6

    Oh yeah, Deku. Very relatable. Everyone can relate to a guy supported by a sugar daddy who gives you the thing you always wanted because it looks cool. He is literally a kid who got an expansive sports car and everyone goes "He deserves it since he had to learn how to drive". MHA is so bad smh

      Shhh the shonen kids will start realizing you're right... Big agree though, the more I think about it, you're analogy is spot on lol. When I think of him being relatable I guess I'm more thinking along the lines of "this kid got bullied I feel bad for him" or "he wants something even though he can't have it." Especially after recent chapters, I'm with you that the series is flawed. From the start I wanted him to be powerless like Robin lol. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!

      I used to like Deku a lot more than I do now as it was my first anime and he was different to the protagonists from other series I was familiar with but as I have read more manga I have realised that he is not as great as I thought. Also his quirk is getting out of hand and no longer has the double edged sword aspect.
      Another thing that made him personally relatable was the rejection he recieved in the first episode from All Might as I too have had some one I looked up to tell me I didn't have what it takes.

    • @thatoneperson8042
      @thatoneperson8042 Před 3 lety +3

      Deku at first was relatable: he was bullied (even told to go kill himself), introverted/shy, awkward, and when he finally met his hero rejected. Even with him getting his quirk he was still useless to a degree since he kept heavily injuring himself in the process.
      However I agree, though yes Deku has somewhat developed (more confident and less hesitant to do things, has a good support system around him, etc.), he's become dull and boring. Deku to me is no longer relatable, he saves people just because it's the right thing to do and that's pretty much it. That right there is why I also hate a few other shonen protagonists. Those who do things either just cause or because they had some dumbass moment where someone told them to do it before dying (and there was no showcase of a strong bond to the audience). It feels like lazy writing. Deku no longer has any appeal to me.

    • @thatoneperson8042
      @thatoneperson8042 Před 3 lety

      But I don't think MHA is bad per say. Since some of the villains are written pretty well. Hawks and Endeavor are the only heroes that I find interesting but with the villains a lot of the cast is pretty cool (at least within the manga). Endeavor is probably one of my favorite characters he's written. He can write villains pretty well and heroes who are forced to deal with moral dilemmas (like Hawks). The students though...and all the other heroes...I mean some are cool (Aizawa) but eh.
