  • Do they match? Will they cut together? Which one is cleaner?
    I compare the Z CAM E2, BMPCC 4K, and Lumix GH5s.
    All three of these cameras feature the same or similar dual ISO sensor, which makes them very comparable. In this video I look at side-by-side clips from all three, pointing out differences and unique characteristics of each. Specifically, I cover noise, shadow recovery, rolling shutter, relative ISO, and color.
    This is the first video in a three-part comparison series.

    You can download all of the footage at this link: https:ninja.click/3cam_footage
    This was shot using three Canon 35mm FD tilt shift lenses (with no tilt or shift applied) and three Helios 44/44-2 lenses. Why? Because those are the only lenses that I could easily get three of. Also, no lens-specific corrections are applied when using manual lenses like these. The GH5s applies in-camera corrections for barrel distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting to native m4/3 lenses.
    All clips from the E2 were shot in 10bit 4:2:0 H.265 ZLog. The GH5s was shot in 10 bit 4:2:2 H.264 VLog. The BMPCC 4K was shot in both 12 bit Cinema DNG RAW 3:1 and 10 bit ProRes HQ. No sharpening or noise reduction was performed. The sharpness settings in each camera were turned all the way down where possible.
    Color correction and grading was performed entirely manually. No LUTs or plugins were used. I wasn't going for beautiful, but more technically correct and matching the other cameras.
    It seems that my experience with oversaturated reds is an issue with DaVinci Resolve. Please check out these two videos for more information:

    P4k has IR pollution. Needs IR Cut Filters. Maybe that's the red push? Also, I think they've addressed some of the strong red channel problems in Gen 5 color.

    • @FlannelNinjaTech
      @FlannelNinjaTech  Před 3 lety

      The red color is from insufficient IR filtering. It isn't something that can really be fixed in post since it affects different colors in different ways. It can be fixed while shooting by using better ND filters that have IR filtering.

    The "red push" in the BMPCC appears to be IR pollution in the sensor. Blackmagic cameras tend to have pretty bad pollution and need to utilize a filter to block out IR light rays when using ND.

    This sort of test helps illustrate how camera tech has converged and the rather small differences between camera images once they've been processed. Even 'colour science' applied by different manufacturers to the same sensor starts to mean less when 10-bit log images can be pulled around. The focus for choosing cameras should be the ergonomics, audio, battery life, connectivity, monitoring tools and convenience of codecs. We should then point the cameras at interesting, unusual or striking thing and figure out how to move the camera in compelling ways, rather than look for convenient footage to take home and quickly make look 'cinematic'. But we're spellbound by xK and xxxfps and the idea of owning new stuff!

    The GH5s performed quite well in this test I think. I like the BMPCC 4k but am against it's form factor and massive number of accessories needed so purchased a GH5s today. GH5s seems to be a better balance in terms of ergonomics, battery life and size. Couldn't really tell much difference between all 3 cameras except for the distracting red colour cast from Blackmagic.

  • @Spirit532
    @Spirit532 Před 5 lety +3

    All three cameras use exactly the same sensor in slightly different grades. The rest is processing and processing alone - this is, however, not to say that processing is a minor thing, because it clearly shows how different the images cam come out.

    • @Ryan-Payne
      @Ryan-Payne Před 5 lety +3

      Generally the black magic cameras have had issues with IR pollution when using stronger ND filters. There may be some present in the shadows as it often shows it'self by shading black objects a tint of red but the high light issue looks to be a problem within the colour science 4 which I hope they address soon, they haven't said anything about it yet but bright reds are much too harsh and saturated atm.

    This comparison I was really curious about. Thank you very much for your effort. I have been following the Z-CAM E2 with interest. but suspect that the 16stop WDR feature is a sort of software trick. Please check the 15stop Z-Log is a fraud or not. I don't know why Z-CAM adheres to the 4: 2: 0 color space. The info I recently heard is that they only supported 4: 2: 2 from 4K30. And I recently received an email from Z-CAM and they were told me they will support 4K60P RAW soon(with external SSD). If they truly support 4K60P RAW and 15stop LOG, it will really be a game changer(and I hope they will reduce sharpness on zlog)

    • @Pessivesto
      @Pessivesto Před 5 lety +2

      @@FlannelNinjaTech I agree. But there was a clear game changer in the market. Canon 5d, RED one, and Sony a7 are examples. Of course this does not mean that these cameras have shaken the Hollywood high-end cinema entries. But at least it has significantly reduced the gap in image quality. for the small budget consumer. Black Magic is blazingly popular in the market with only RAW and high bit rate. Despite many shortcomings. As a person who supports the underdog. I hope Z-cam are doing well through radical updates. Then, at least more CZcamsr will give the camera free promotion. It will be a good stimulus for MTF and mirrorless market. As a mini game changer.

Why would this company need to create a Zlog2 profile that has 15 stops of dynamic range when the camera can already get 16 stops through its wide dynamic range mode? Also, it seems that all these camera companies illustrate a certain dynamic range ability and later after dynamic range tests have been done they're usually 1 to 1 1/2 stops of dynamic range less than what was expected. Have you properly converted the log to REC.709 or you just added contrast and density to it? As far as I understand you should be using blackmagic's own lut to extended video to compare those.

    I think the bmpcc4k is suffering from IR pollution. If you had an IRCUT filter then it probably would have helped with matching them all closer in the blacks.

    Hi Mark, I love the video! I've downloaded the footage and I honestly can't see any advantage of the RAW files over the GH5s in any normal scenario. I raised shadows to a high level in the contrasty scenes... still the GH5s was doing great. What do you think?

    • @zee3o221
      @zee3o221 Před 5 lety

      @@FlannelNinjaTech Thanks a lot Mark for your help! if you are doing anymore testing then please include a little sharpness test. Some people alleged that GH5s has a digital sharpness that is different from the Blackmagic (RAW and Prores). From your footage they seem the same (at -5 sharpness -5 NR ) but since they are all wide shots it's hard to be 100 percent sure. Thanks once again

  • @tracksideentertainment557

    The GH5S seems to perform better than the BM or am I just biased?

    You can remove the magenta from the BMPCC4K in the camera settings.

    • @digwillhachi
      @digwillhachi Před 4 lety

      @@FlannelNinjaTech If you say so. The camera adds I think +10 magenta. I set that to zero and use buttery LUTs REC 709 and I don't get any magenta hue. While an IR filter may in some cases be necessary I have never really noticed the need for one in my case.

  • @chrisklugh

    I'm coming from a GH5. If I were to get a 2nd camera but not necessarily interested in RAW atm, what camera would you get?
    I've been ogling the GH5s and probably would take it over the BM as it has a unique form factor with messy battery factor.
    I like how familiar I would be with the GH5s in terms of usage including the wireless app.
    But the E2 seems to have them both beat for a camera that steps into a different 'class'. It does shoot HLG, and its Rec709 profile look very nice.
    So I think I know my answer, but it does not hurt to have someone challenge it.

    • @chrisklugh
      @chrisklugh Před 4 lety

      @@FlannelNinjaTech That's how I feel about it too. Its more 'future proof' then the GH5s. I think I will go that route and hope that I don't have too much of a problem color matching. lol

    Did u use the LUT from Z CAM? Because the LUT also transforms the specific colorspace of Z-LOG to rec 709. So colors get remapped, then the reds and skin tones should look like they should.

  • @MightyDtv

    Very interesting comparison. I was a bit shocked about the dramatic red shift of the Blackmagic. As you said without comparing it‘s something you‘d never really notice. Might not be a problem for me either in most scenarios. Where I really see a problem though is with the concert footage. As I shoot a lot of those it would be a definite reason not to get this cam...
    Do you think you could make up for it by changing the Tint while shooting?
    Thanks man.

    @jayclas4023 Před 2 lety

    Hello, did you use a IR cut filter on the Black Magic? If not you definitely need one before comparing colors, it's the biggest mistake I see on CZcams. Also using BRAW, it doesn't have noise reduction like the internal codec from the GH5s. the noise reduction in post actually reduce chroma(color0 that will remove those pixels quite easily.

Im wondering if this is actually what causes the red push in the blacks that you mention, rather than a color science thing.
