Those bearings were fine. What rust? Some witness marks in the bearing races where the rollers sat doesn't mean it's worn out.

I’ve changed out my CB650SC’s std ball bearings to taper roller bearing and back to std, then back to taper again 20+ years ago. I remember the ..fun I had chasing down some front end weave. Sorry Nick, Santa brought me some new items this year to make life a little easier, I seem to do so many head bearings it was worth the investment... and yeah, with the bar clamps, it's a BMW design that seems pretty logical to me... the Germans always think in a logical way with things like that, apparently you torque up the front bolts first, then nip up the rears to set the bars in place!

Interesting to hear your comments on jet washing. I never jet wash my bike, good old fashioned sponge and soapy water after a scrub down with de-greaser. Then just wash it all off gently with several buckets of warm water, and leather it dry. Were the headstock bearings universal, or are they an individual fit, they did look the same, but the camera CAN lie.

  • @neanderthalsurvivor4141

Excellent; the use of tools to place without damaging the tapered bearings
I always wait for those "special effects" that you print very good sound and slow motion of the fall
I think that manufacturers place balls instead of cones because it does not matter the duration, in the end the water will run out before the pressure wear
those cones on my heavy duty pickup can last 180,000 miles properly adjusted and lubricated
but if the water enters it will destroy them easily
so the manufacturer places a cheaper ball bearing because the conical will not be an advantage in duration

Peter's right, Sealey ship worldwide, you just need to locate a supplier... at the moment the guys at Spanner Monkey are struggling a little with export orders due to various restrictions, but bigger firms like Amazon aren't, if in doubt contact Sealey directly in the UK to place your order and they should be able to sort out shipping for you through one of their suppliers.

I never even knew that there was a bearing press of that nature. Thanks for the video. Has me considering adding more to the tool box though as i have 2 bikes with approx 40,000 km each!

Its increasingly common for bikes to come off production lines with insufficient grease on critical bearings, and it doesn't help if a "technician" without knowing the factory torque settings has over tightened the stem. Both problems I have encountered.....along with that perennial favourite "a chimp with a pressure washer".

Ha ha.. i like that.!! And yeah, im hearing this a lot in folks comments, many finding practically dry bearings from the factory !! and this is the result aye.!

I actually like doing steering head bearings and races. I have done several of my friends bikes this winter. Those were pretty bad. Investing in the tools to do it makes the job not so difficult.

Nicely done!! Seems that bike came out of bottom of lake for how much corrosion and rust it has!! Love the bearing tools you have. Nice!!

With your experience and proper tools, you make that look easy! When I do work like that, a video would be filled with cursing and flung tools…😆
