I too love the Pilot Custom 823 in medium, I have it in brown. The Omas seems like a solid pen, I like the Diamine Emerald pairing. Congrats on a great find. Interesting paper as well.

The motif on the band and on the section is "Greek Key"... great acquisition... great first impression's video. The top-up was a great way to add engagement.

@@CarrotsOlives I got the Whiskey Pilot Capless a couple weeks ago and last week ordered my first Santini Italia Libra. SO excited about that one!!! I'm definitely a sucker for a CLASSY looking pen. I think that's what caught my eye, the Omas in black and gold.

that decoration you call "old style" is well known in architecture and it's called "greca" in Italian, Greek fret in your language. Omas used to be one of the most important and highest quality fountain pen brand in Italy but today it followed the way to Chinese garbage. The real Omas Italian tradition has been taken over by Scribo, a small company founded by ex Omas employees in Bologna, that bought the same machine Omas used for making nibs. I personally prefer the Aurora style but Scribo 's nibs especially flex nibs are incredible.

The center band design is called a greek key.

I have been interested in getting an Omas. How would you compare the feel of the Omas nib while writing compared to your Pilot 823 and your Platinum #3776? (I know the nib sizes vary, but I am wondering about how they fall on a continuum of smooth to feedbacky.)

    • @ironmic9244
      @ironmic9244 Před 5 měsíci

If I can be blunt. And mean no disrespect. Save your money and get the original. If you like a really smooth nib, trust me you will not regret it. There hasn't been one person I've turned OMAS onto, that have regretted it.

I’d like to know what they were known for as a company before the “new” Omas. What the hype was about for those who loved the brand while they were in business?

Can you tell us why there is controversy regarding Omas? Personally, I don't know who to believe because there are dozens of online opinions (pro and con). I do not know who to believe. So, why don't you enlighten us??

      1) Why was OMAS so loved?
2 reasons. Great pen materials, but many have that. Where OMAS excelled far and beyond anyone else was their nibs, especially if you like a super smooth nib.
The pens weren't perfect, but the pens were well engineered, particularly the pens made when Armando Simoni was alive and in charge.
      2) Why I loved OMAS
Again, while not perfect, it came as close to perfection in a pen for me. For me. The pens were engineered well, they had history, pedigree, and when the founder says, all this pen has to do is write, or something to that affect, I feel you can take that to the bank. The pens were also innovative, used great materials, had interesting and difficult to produce designs and of course those nibs. Those nibs, those nibs. The nibs haunt my dreams, they are that good. I say 2 things regarding OMAS nibs. There is OMAS, one thousand levels, and then Pelikan (my second favorite). The other, is the pen is the only pen I can't describe the writing experience. You feel out of control and in control at the same time, much like you get when driving a very finely tuned car. You can't describe an OMAS, you just have to experience it.
Now granted not all were great, because after the family sold them to LVMH, they started to cut costs, but the pens were still pretty good up until I would say 2007. After 2010 though, don't bother. Everything was just down the drain.
      3) Controversy
Those of us who know the old OMAS, grieve for it's loss. Instead of selling everything to one buyer, the owner decided to liquidate the company and sell it's parts off. For shame. The nib making machines went to SCRIBO, the celluloids ( the arcos that everyone goes bezerk over-those are OMAS celluloids) then went to ASC, the name and brand just sat there, until it was bought by Ancora in 2022 or 2023 (the last to be bought), the resins were bought buy someone else ( The Leonardo Nuvola people like - that resin was first made by OMAS).
No one who likes the old OMAS, well maybe not no one, but most, and I suspect privately everyone who like the old OMAS, probably want nothing to do with what ever this thing it - Sorry Carrots. I don't mean to be mean about a pen you have.
      The guts of the contro
It was bad enough they dismembered the company, but when Ancora bought the rights to the name, they decided not to produce any pens right now. At the same time Narwharl used a loop-hole in US law to register the OMAS name to make pens under that brand. Now they say they have bought the bleuprints from OMAS, but seriously OMAS and Narwharl in the same sentence????????
In early 2023 Narwharl and ASC worked together to make the 1st generation of omas. They used celluloid from ASC, and got loose OMAS nibs from nibs to make the pen Ogiva 222 and the Israel 75. But the pens are made in the Gioia ??? factory in Naples. OMAS can only be made in Bologna. The 2nd generation of pens (well I call it that) are still made in Italy, but many doubt that, using OMAS celluloid on the Paragon, but the nib is being made in-house, which many of us believe to be the same 14k gold nib Narwharl uses.
OMAS is sacred, and those of us believe it's nothing but a cash grab and trading on a name that should be left to rest. If you can't match the expectation, don't do it. That is why Ancora has not done anything yet with their OMAS brand. They want to do it right. They want to do it that encapsulates the soul of OMAS.
To add the to confusion there are 2 OMAS websites. omas and omasofficial. Really??? I mean really????? Come one when you have to write official for your website you know you posing. Of course they couldn't get omas, because that website and TM went to Ancora who is the rightful owner of the name.
This is as how I have understood it. I hope that helps clear things up. If not, ask away.
