Rio Hotel’s new owner wants skybridge to connect Las Vegas Strip to redeveloped “neighborhood” west

- As Rio Hotel & Casino’s new owner attempts to bring vibrance back to the neon resort through a $340 million revamp, he also wants to bridge the gap between them and the Las Vegas Strip, literally.
They need to bring back that buffet.
El burro restaurant and hash go go were both delicious and they are both in there
Bring back John Lipkowitz who created the buffet
And price it a $9.95.
Back in the day we would head up on the weekends couple times a month for the buffet, free parking, no resort fees. Obviously all has changed and we haven’t been back for several years.
That seafood buffet was heaven!
Too hot to walk. Too cold to walk. Too far to walk. Too windy to walk. Too risky to walk. Pick the one you like best. The solution is a tram system.
Or fkin drive
I love that the new owners are really working to make Rio great again!
new owner is smoking meth haha
I don’t know about the sky bridge, but I remember when the rio was a cool place with the show in the sky and more. It really went down the tubes. It will be interesting if it will ever be what it was.
Have you seen the new exterior lighting.
It's an amazing update that I didn't expect at all.
I applaud him for trying to bring back an old property. It's an absolute waste of human resources to be building these giant buildings and then tearing them down. We're treating these structures as consumables.
MRGA !!!
What they need is a tram system connecting the strip, Rio, palms, gold coast, and China town
The previous owners solved this problem years ago with a free shuttle. A shuttle bus is a lot cheaper and could be up and running immediately. Stop asking for a handout and just fix the problem yourself.
Free shuttle like old days . And bring the strip to you! 🎰
You are absolutely right!
If he wants the bridge, he can write the check for it.
they do get taxed by the state, so it's mutually beneficial and can raise values for land investments. Chinatown is a booming area compared to the rest of the city off the strip.
You know Rio pays taxes. If there was no taxes then everything would be pay as you go. Maybe you should pay for your children’s education
Do you say the same about F1 or are you a hypocrite?
Commifornia can't wait for Nevada to build that new airport. Interesting how Commifornia isn't funding it though are they?
I didn't realize I had kids. Do you know something that I don't? As for my parents, they sent me to private schools. If I did have kids they would be in private schools. @@Dept246
Yes, the RIO and the rest do pay taxes but gaming is taxed at a very low rate .@@Dept246
Bring back Show in the Sky....you've got a customer for life!
Bring back free shuttles. Problem solved.
This. It was the only reason I ever went to Rio. And for what its worth, I had a blast!
Shuttles cost money. Billionaire hotel casino owners don't spend money unless it belongs to the taxpayers.
@@Oheeeoh that how they stay billionaires
I remember the shuttle that ran between Rio and Harrah's, was disappointed that they discontinued it.
A free shuttle bus from the strip to the Rio is a critical need if the Rio is serious about bringing in players from the strip. It is too far to walk, and I can't think of anyone in their right mind who would walk over a mile there from the strip or wait for a bus in the summertime!@@Oheeeoh
A sky bridge already exists. Flamingo crosses I-15. Bring back the Buffet and Rio Rita!
Bring back the World Buffet, the beautiful showgirls, and the gorgeous cocktail waitresses in skimpy outfits. They were the main draws to the Rio.
Tram or fully enclosed "experience"
Las Vegas paving already has Vegas and a perpetual construction zone. Nothing is ever finished. Can you imagine the construction nightmare this would cause if he built this bridge! Absolutely ridiculous.
💯
I'm glad the Rio is coming back. I stayed there the first time I played in the WSOP tournaments (the WSOP used to be based at the Rio). My room was spacious, clean, and relatively affordable--and I never had to go outside the Rio to get different types of cuisine. I even won $2,500 with a $2 bet at a slot machine while killing time before I had to play poker in one of the tournaments!
You don't have to walk from the Rio if you don't stay at the Rio😂
check please
True i would not stay here again because the location
The walk would still be too far and unattractive unless they put in a lot of moving walkways. But if he wants to pay for it without a penny of government funds, then go for it.
Rio used to soooo much fun till Caesars took it over and ran it into the ground.
Sounds like a pipe dream. The strip has 3 trams on the same side and none are connected so good luck with this. There should be one monorail that hits everything on the strip. One of the trams only runs between TI and the Mirage.
By removing the buffet, he doomed the property. The only reason I would ever go is for a buffet. The food court is a joke and looks like it was designed by an amature.
I was there last year in May 2023 and it was pretty rough I can't imagine what they have in mind & yes that walk from Rio to the Strip and back can be pretty rough
We went a month a go and it was a really good hotel, restaurants were good and taxi was $14 pretty much every time we used it.
If he wants to be connected to the strip he should have purchased the vacant land across from the wynn and build
Wynn literally owns that land and wouldn't sell.
Improve the tram / rail system and routes instead!!
That is a fabulous idea!
Does nobody know the short way from Caesar’s to the Rio? Walk out back door of Caesar’s (door by Cheesecake Factory is closest), walk by parking garage, cross road, underpass, road, underpass (that all takes 4 minutes). And you are at corner of Rio back parking lot. If you could walk through it, rather than skirt it, you would be one block of parking lot from back door of Rio. Easy walk, little traffic, shady mostly, and rare to see any homeless or worse. The front way, (shown) is ten times worse in all respects - and a heck of a lot longer.
At night? Forget about it! You say "rare to see homeless"? You got lucky, they are everywhere in LV.
Perhaps not at night - but wouldn’t want to walk front way at night either. I done it dozens of times and never seen any homeless.
Well, the bridge will be a new shiny toy for the homeless to take over, they will be the majority of who will be walking on it. We have uber and lyfts, cabs, rtc. I see ppl saying bring the shuttles back, which I agree with that too, save your self millions of dollars. Or yea, buy the other property and yes connect the tram or monorail to the rio area. They should of built the monorail to go around the whole strip to begin with, they did spend a couple billion on the monorail to only travel down one side of the strip, whats a couple more to make it make sense and go around on both sides, downtown and the rio/palms area too. Just sayin 🤷.
A New Yorker with no clue about Las Vegas is dreaming. Rio was Rio in the past due to amenities. It was a destination, especially people with cars. If he thinks people may walk to Rio, they prefer to walk to Resorts World. Rio is destined to fail one more time.
Build a bridge, and the homeless will take it over again. Couldn't tell you how many times I walked the existing one that was filled with poop, trash, and sleeping homeless people layed out. It's a 10 minute walk 😂😂 they timed it
Yep, the panhandling, the card clappers for prostitutes, the mentally challenged homeless ppl, you know it.
If $750 million can be spent on F1 temporary infrastructure then why can’t a pedestrian friendly bridge be built?!
Women and economics go together like water and oil.
1 brings money into town and the other costs money.
Also temporary doesn’t mean 1 time use…
I mean, I don't mind the idea of another Fremont. Even closer to the stirp. Rio and Palm really should ally together to get it done. China town being close by is a huge plus and huge draw for the foodies that go to Vegas.
Has Vegas ever thought about expanding the monorail or doing a subway system? The bus system is pretty decent there, you would think they might want to take the next step. Stop pretending that the Vegas Loop is going to solve the transportation issue.
it's nice that the Rio is coming back
Non smoking and the bridge
They need to work on security first, over 60 rooms broke into during the pool tournament there in March. Sad
They used to have a shuttle.
I remember that it’s better than a walkway
@@sbloome77 they all did away with the shuttles
Bring back the free shuttle from the strip, parade in the sky, and hallway security cameras
Maybe Penn and Teller can pull a land bridge out of a hat! Haha, I kid, I'd walk much farther than 10 minutes to see that show. Glad to see the Rio get the TLC it deserves.
Great idea but people don’t wanna walk to an outdated unpopular casino , center strip is where it’s at
You do realize that the Rio is being updated, right?
Yeah that walk from the Rio to the Strip in 110 degrees is brutal. Rent some camels or donkeys…😂🤣
😂
If the pedestrian bridges over LV BLVD are crime ridden imagine what such a project like this will bring!
They need more than just Penn & Teller. That's the only draw and has been for a long time. If you're trying to pull people in away from the strip, you need much more than that
Even with a bridge that is to far of a walk. They need a tram or something. Additionally, the three casinos in that area, Rio, Palms, and Gold Coast should market their neighborhood as Flamingo West or something. They should offer food specials. Maybe make points earned for gambling redeemable at all three properties. Some type of tram/shuttle between the three properties would also be nice.
Super sweet!!!❤
Let's get real. While I always enjoyed poker at the annual WSOP event at the Rio, it has moved on. A skybridge is unrealistic in today's Las Vegas.
Blame It On Rio
Great opportunity to hire back performers as rickshaw pullers lol
Homeless from the strip will take it over
I don't get the reporter's point. How would the bridge shorten the walk, unless it's a moving sidewalk, and preferably covered, for when it's 110 outside? A bridge would only make the walk more bearable, when compared to walking the narrow sidewalk along the street.
How about providing free shuttles in the meantime???
Rio used to have free shuttles
Does he have any idea how much that would cost and how big that would actually be the Rio isn’t exactly close to Las Vegas Blvd. It’s still relatively a lot of space to put a bridge and it would look so ugly.
How about a skybridge to The Palms where there is a buffet?
More construction, traffic is already bad whit every street been in construction..
That seems like it would be very expensive to do
Extend the show in the sky onto the bridge and allow everyone to ride it
Rich people always want want want but never want to pay pay pay!
Keep it up!….And I’ll apply there lol
Oh, well isn't that creative. That's actually a great idea and that area of town has tons of space and it's WAY underutilized. I remember when Pink's was there eons ago. I hooked up w/ a T-Girl the night I went there, haha, awww memories. They could do all kinds of cool stuff with the space. The always problem is the strip has built up SO much over the last decade or 2 and there's so much to see now; people aren't as eager to walk like they used to be. If not a sky bridge, it'd be cool to have an underground tunnel connecting the 2 areas, but it would require some of the flood tunnel system to be rerouted. The Rio property itself has tons of space, think of that junky area right in front and to the back of the tunnels- could all be turned into something. If this guy does this right, you could make the strip into a square essentially and syphon foot traffic from the further ends of the strip to your connecting property, making Flamingo kind of the epicenter of Vegas. It was easy back in the day, you walked the strip, and each property was unique, and you'd stop and throw some money in a machine while ya had a cheap drink, then went to the next casino. Like I said, the problem is each casino is so built up now exploring them takes quite a while and cuts down on the distances people are willing to walk to see stuff. It's so large now= I would want to be there a week to fully explore the whole thing. Do you remember when Caeser's, which was set Way back into the property had all the Sky elevators, lol. They were fun and cool for a while.
all that money in Vegas and yet no buildings like Dubai 😕 😊
I walked that walk in January to the strip not good in the dark but ok in daytime😊
I remember driving taxi and staging at Rio for a while only to take somebody to Bellagio or Caesars, sh!! ride for sure.
North door of Bellagio is the worst LOL
@@katestuart327 I don't blame people for not walking especially in the summertime. Just bring back the free shuttles, that's all.
Walking to and fro is too dayum far.. bridge or no bridge. You have to pack a mule to make the trip.
Excuse me what?
There is a monorail system already established here.
Put the the train to work SO PEOPLE CAN GET TO WORK
#realsolutions
How does that help the Rio?
The high line is a walk way park … it doesn’t connect any thing
*I gamble at every casino on the strip except the rio and that’s because it’s in a awkward spot to be walking or trying to get to and it’s basically like walking on the side of the expressway to get to them*
Wouldn't the walk on a new bridge still be the same distance / time?
Monorail.
You bet. I walked that before it's not a good walk
Bring back the free shuttles and the great Rio Carnival World buffet.
NOOOO! Please dont!
Love the idea
I have lots of great memories at shutters bar 😁😁
Absolutely need new beds with good mattresses and take WSOP back!
I was there yesterday. It was almost a ghost town. Crappy location that is not going to change.
I don’t think the location is crappy, look at Palms, it’s literally across the street and it’s packed always.
@@MichaelInTheDesert try a visit after the sun goes down…
I'm not walking that far to some old hotel.
I walked to rio drunk I dunno if jogged there or walked but I got there fast 😂
You probably had to pee...that's always a motivator!..
He should focus on security at the Rio first
Cameras need to be in hallways, stat. I'm not staying there again until security is better
The walk isn't the worse part, headphones and spotify and the duration of the walk is fine but it's just gross and unless you really want something, there isn't a big draw to the RIO yet.
Do it. Build it, and the foot traffic will come eventually
Good idea
What about the parade ?
Wow, 10 hours and 31 minutes just to walk from the Strip to the Rio. This guy is really slow.
Also, the new owner seems like he's on drugs.
Just stayed there. Great staff but inadequate security.
But people still have to walk over the bridge (both ways)!
Look your company bought a hotel in a crap location and asking the county to fund it is a joke.
Instead, Rio needs to embrace its old brand that worked 30 years ago which was all suites for the price of a standard room on the strip. And develop another hot, hip night club at the top of the bullding (previously Voodoo lounge).
The problem is that $300M renovation will prohibit you from pricing your suites accordingly.
While this is cool, and I support it... LIGHT RAIL WOULD BE BETTER!
Should have thought about the bad location before buying the casino. You're still talking about forcing people to walk a long distance in the Vegas heat. Massive waste of money for taxpayers and likely won't get the Rio much foot traffic.
Unless it's enclosed, moving, and has a/c, summer tourists won't take that hike..
Do it!
The population surrounding the Rio is the working population. Plus the underbelly. In the Rios mind, they want to bring The Strip foot traffic to that side of the I-15. Yea right 😂😂😂. I used to love the Rio as a young local. Quick drive from the Strip. Be damned if I walk over there though 💯💯💯
Yeah, and I want a rocket ship like Elon’s. If he wanted a skybridge he should’ve had those “conversations” before he ponied up his New York money without doing his due diligence and finding out THAT was the reason RIO died in the first place. That and the fact that Caesars Entertainment can’t manage anything properly and went bankrupt. I can take one look at this guy Birnbaum and I see a hybrid of a chiseler, and a cross between Jared Kushner(who just sickeningly said that Gaza needed to get redeveloped into luxury seaside property)and Steve Wynn wannabe. Before any ridiculous skybridge is built let’s get a train to the Strip from the airport built AND about 20,000 units of affordable housing for seniors built.
Agree......This dude gave me Barry Minkow (ZZZ Best) vibes, a Steve Wynn wannabe, for sure. He's delusional! Even if he had all the funding in place you're looking at years of permits, studies, access and eminent domain issues....
It that far of a walk get stuck in strip traffic and take longer to drive.
Dude has crazy eyes.
Doesn't seem like the typical CEO/casino owner.
More Freeplay😂
The solution is call AI autonomous solar self driving vehicle.
Rio stands for, "Rest In Obsolescence."
Doesn't sound realistic. No way I'm walking to the Rio to see traffic, lowlife, and bums. It kills the mood. Better to connect the monorail.
I love this idea as long as it can be kept safe and clean.
Since when do you dictate policy? I'd like nationalized Healthcare, free college AND to move out of this hellhole nation but that won't be happening any time soon. Neither will that pedestrian sky bridge...
You're free to move out, no one can make you stay.
@@kendallevans4079 Except I have to be a citizen of another country to live there........
@@rosameryrojas-delcerro1059Not always. In Many counties you can stay indefinitely if you just leave for a day or 2 every 6 months. There are other ways also, some as simple as having a big chuck of money int he bank. many ways, I'm planning an exit myself in a couple years.
Vedas needs to keep evolving or it will turn into Reno
The color scheme is too dark, gloomy, and depressing. Get rid of the Discoish pink and purple disco ball glass on the outside of the building, change the color scheme, white and blue is always refreshing and uplifting, bright white LED lights everywhere, the interior is too dark and drab.

More bad Vegas ideas. Just connect the monorail to it.
Keep dreaming. The monorail isn't profitable today so why would they extend it over there?
