Thank you very much. The Moen videos just show a brand new cartridges sliding out. When most (all?) of us are dealing with years old cartridges with buildup. Not to mention how many of us ALSO are dealing with a broken stem. This did the trick. And I never would have thought heat was the trick. hank you so much I love CZcams and the helpful community within it.

I just wanted to say in 2022 I'm watching this video and thanks. I was stuck trying....catridge puller didn't work alone. The heat definitely helped...saves me money and if I would have come across your vid sooner would have saved me a few weeks of turning off and on from access panel for showers because I was determined to do this myself and not hire anyone...Thanks Again!!!

Wow! Like everyone else, thank you!!! To anyone thinking of giving up, just be patient with the heat! I got mine halfway out and it still wouldn't budge after 15 minutes. Tried another 15 and it came right out! (The rubber pieces on the side of my Moen positemp cartridge had completely fused to the side. I literally had to use the heat to soften the rubber enough to then rip out! It would've been impossible without the heat!) Thanks again!!

Thanks for the hair dryer idea. I used the hair dryer for a while with no success. I then sprayed the cartridge with WD-40, gave it a few minutes to soak in, and then gave it more heat (about 5 minutes). Then I attached the cartridge puller and was able to get the cartridge to turn. The heat definitely helped but mine was installed for over 15 years and needed the wd-40 to get it loose. I had watched Moen’s video on cartridge replacement before starting the job which made it look so easy that I thought I was doing something wrong. Then I searched for stuck cartridge and found this helpful video and saw that they made it look way too easy .

Many thanks

This was the most helpful tip! That pre heat changed the game. I didn't have a ton of manpower to put behind pulling it and lacked the huge set of pliers/wrench to manhadle it. Turns out one plastic side was jammed. Probably into the hot side which explains my hot water problems for the past several months. Thank you so much!

You just made my day! I was having no luck with a 22 year old cartridge & was afraid I was going to break it off like some of the other CZcams videos show. Then I ran across your video & the tip to heat the valve. Bingo! 5 minutes with the wife's hair dryer & it loosened right up with the included Moen plastic tool. Then just a slow pull with my channel lock pliers and out it came. I stuck my finger into the valve bore to see how bad the surface was & was quickly reminded I had just spent 5 minutes heating it up! Do that AFTER it cools! Thanks mucho.

I work at a plumbing supply shop and one of our most common problems regarding Moen products is stuck cartridges. You did a very good job of explaining the process of removing the cartridge from the valve. But you made a mistake on one thing. The lubricant is meant for the o-ring, not the cartridge itself. It is a waterproof silicone-based lubricant made specifically to extend the life of the o-ring on the cartridge. Depending on what kind of water purification system you have, those o-rings can wear out pretty quickly (which causes a leak). Other than that, great job!

    • @gregr1115
      @gregr1115 Před 2 lety +15

I know this is an older video, but the instructions from Moen specifically state to "apply lubricant to cartridge oval on both sides". It makes no mention of using lubricant on o-ring.

As someone who just finished dealing with a stuck MOEN cartridge without the special OEM tool, WD40 IS YOUR FRIEND!! Lube the living hell outta the crack between the cartridge and the pipe, wait about 7 minutes, then get some normal pliers and grip the part of the plastic on the left and right of the "HC" text (around the middle where the brass comes out) REALLY hard. You'll want gloves for this, as my pliers gave me a nasty bite on my first attempt. Don't try to grip the brass, you won't get enough purchase. Pull firmly while turning back and forth. Lube some more if you don't make further progress, then wipe the excess and pull/twist again. Patience is key here, any progress is better than no progress or breaking it. Repeat until the cartridge pops out. Took me about 2 hours to figure it out my first time doing this. When you get the cartridge far enough out, you can grip the circular portion for better leverage. If you need some help in the early stages, there should be a slot near the top you can get a screwdriver into to coax it out. Take your time and make sure the water main is off. If the handle is upside down to turn off the water, you just need to flip the black plastic part and you're good to go.

Here is a simple trick to get the valve out.
Take off the shower head and replace with a standard end cap (1/2" black iron cap - less than $2). Take the pin off the cartridge and turn on the main water supply. Wait until the valve is pushed out by water pressure or you can help it out with pliers. (Have someone ready to turn off water supply) Done!

I just removed a 1222 cartridge. First time for me. It was really stuck. I'm not sure if an after market cartridge was used by the plumber.
    I tried slip joint pliers:
Twisted it from side to side using long nose pliers.
    Vinegar and WD40
It partially came out then stopped.
I went and bought an off brand puller. I thought this is going to be easy now. Nope.
    It wouldn't pull out.
It finally snapped. Lucky it was partially out.
I broke the plastic with a flat head screwdriver and pulled pieces out with long nose pliers.
Some rubber from the cartridge was really sticking. This portion of the removal was quite easy. I made sure all the plastic was out.
Now I've got a puller tool that I'll probably never use again.

If you don't have the plastic removal tool (if, like me, you had to remove the cartridge to see what you needed to buy), you can do the same thing with an open needle-nose pliers, using the ends to work the cartridge back and forth to loosen it up - a makeshift wrench that sort of fits around the stem. The heat worked, too.
My other problem was getting the new one in all the way to get the retaining clip in, as my builder didn't secure the plumbing to any studs, and some plastic disc, just bigger than the shower hole, blocked access.. (Thanks, Ryan Homes.) Had to reassemble the escutcheon just to firm it up enough to tap the cartridge in with a hammer. Disassemble, put in the clip, reassemble. Argggh.

Yours came out with the rubber sides still intact, mine were jammed into the hot and cold valve body ports. I'll try heating next time. Previously, I had to rig up pry bars on each side of a handle on a "removal" tool that can't remove the cartridge more than a few millimeters due to the tabs on the top and bottom of the cartridge.

I broke off the tabs, then used a puller, worked like a charm.
