The plane at Coronado is grounded off the runway. It's a display piece. Also Coronado literally surrounds the San Diego naval station. So really it's more like 1 super sized base. Thank you for your service Ryan, my grandfather was a US marine in ww2 and I appreciate you and Luke sharing your experiences. Have a great day sir.

Yeah, optical illusion. It's parked well off the runway, it's just such a large aircraft that the eye tries to put it closer. It looks like a C-5, so it's a big boy. Could be a C-17 but the nose doesn't look rounded enough. Watching those things take off in person your brain is just screaming at you "nothing that big, moving that slow could ever fly, it must be fake".

That's crazy because you just need to add on Naval airstation Oceana and Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek they techilnically are subsidiary bases for Norfolk bith California and Virignia have stupid large military installations as well and you got larger Naval Base real estate wise. Even Pearl Harbor over here you got west Loch thats across the water you also got Lualualei which is a Naval magazine supporting us here at Pearl, Keena Point supporting Hickam, NCTAMS in Wahiawa which are all subsidiary bases of Pearl Harbor its a good 20% of the island that belongs to the Navy or Airforce.

Lol I was wondering what Ryan was talking about and when he walked it back a couple times, I can see that he thought it was in the air. Kinda funny because that would mean there's no landing strip for it. Also I didn't know that about Coronado so thanks!

In 1978 I was cargo on the LST USS L'Amour County for Operation Reforger. We docked at Rosythe and I took the train across the firth to Edinberg. I climbed Dun Edin on the Royal Mile and toured the castle. Frankly, I was more impressed with the city of Edinberg than the Naval Base Rosythe.
United States Marines on active duty are only stationed at Ft. Worth if they are acting as Reserve Training Instructors. Also called I and I duty.

I was stationed on the USS Eisenhower CVN-69 in the mid 90's and Naval Base Norfolk is its home port, and is indeed F-ing HUGE! It had a very large shopping mall with the Commissary in it. It had its own multi screen movie theater, McDonalds, a place called the Wind and Sea club where you could rent movies alla a Blockbuster, but you could also play pool, rent video games etc. Then Newport News Shipyards is right next door, that is where I saw (in the mid 90's) the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 who was going through final testing, and them building the USS Harry S. Truman CVN-75, it was like watching a Leggo project on a massive scale. Newport News had at that time the largest crane in the world, the thing was MASSIVE and was driven around on train tracks!!

JRB Ft Worth was the old Carswell AFB IN Texas. It was closed in the 1994 and the navy, having a small base in Dallas (NASA Dallas) grabbed the opportunity to expand into the old Air Force base. The base was build in 1941 and is occupied pretty much by reserve forces of each of the services.

      Fun fact.
Those nice brick houses on base, were supposed to go to Portsmouth, NH.
Housing was ordered for both locations, at the same time.
So, we got houses with severe hurricane bracing, but, no overhang for snow,, and ice.
You got some nice brick houses, with no hurricane bracing whatsoever. But,, I guess the overhanging roof keeps some rain off of your windows.. 😅

Regarding Coronado, I know that plane is very loud when it takes off, I was lucky working as a contractor 20 years ago, early morning we heard those massive engines reve up, building was shaking, this was around 7am, Naval Station San Diego is actually right across from North Island, so if we had combine all the Navy bases I'm sure we be in the top 3. But if you combine all the bases including the Marine bases I'm sure we be number 1. As a kid I enjoyed going to the air show when it was NAS Miramar, Top Gun, hearing and seeing the F-14 Tomcats with their full afterburners was an impressive site,

I live in Fort Worth, was originally Carswell AFB. It's been around decades, but the recession took place around that time and became a victim of budget constraints. Shortly after, it became NAS. Also, it doesn't mention Lockheed is next door, where the F-35 is manufactured. So, various fighter planes from all branches use it.

I was stationed here as an active duty Marine working on KC-130 at VMGR-234. This is a 4th MAW base so reservist for air force, Navy, Marines and a small security army unit.
There is just the MAG, the kc-130s, and a unit of F18s. Navy has like 3 F18 units, and the air force has f16 and c-130

Coronado is home to Buds training (Seal) as well. North Island i believe is home to Top Gun now whereas it used to be Miramar. If you are a marine chances are you will get stationed on a either a Naval Base or Navy ship if not on a Marine Corps base but by same token if you are enlisted Hospital Corps [ Medic to Army & Air Force ] or Religous Personnel you may in addition to Navy schools get sent to a Fleet Marine Force [USMC school ] training then assigned to USMC units/base - In My day it was mandatory we wore USMC uniforms but with our USN rank/rate which looks different than the USMC rank as never enlisted in USMC but in USN however this is possible because if you look at the official seal of the USMC it says: > their Pilots and Navigators go to NAVAL aviation school Naval Base Pensacola to earn their wings and they get carrier take off/Landing training that the Air Force does not get. A lot of the military bases in the US were built in the middle of nowhere on government owned land left over after the Homesteader's Act ended in the early 1900's. The bases are built on land the gov't couldn't give away to settlers because it was too inhospitable for farming. The farmers would starve to death trying to get the land to support crops, so they grabbed nicer plots of land to settle on. The US gov't owns more land in the US than any other entity because of the Lousiana Purchase, when the US bought the rest of the west from Mexico, and the Alaska Purchase. I'm pretty sure the US gov't had to buy most of the land from citizens to set up the naval bases on the US coast.

Militarily, the western world seems to have shifted to a modern form of chivalric defense. The exception, of course, is the United States with its power being similar to the Roman Empire. After the decline of Rome, many small nations broke away. As such, there were very limited resources for defense, unlike the massive budget the Romans had for professional soldiers. So, these smaller nations focused on equipping highly-skilled individuals with the best equipment they could afford. In today's terms, the militaries of most European nations have focused on training commbat troops to be special forces, essentially. So, even though they may be small, they still pack quite a punch where it counts.

There are multiple dozens more Navy bases not mentioned here both at home and abroad. And this is only the Navy. Don't even get started on how many Army, Air Force, and Marines bases there are both at home and around the world. I don't care what others say, I am dam proud of our US and fellow UK countries and militaries. We got each other's back, especially in these uncertain times and emerging threats.

I do believe those numbers are for military when they say and family members that would be those numbers plus family members.

Every single naval base around the world has a Marine detachment assigned to it. They are the security for the Navy.

Nearby NAS Fallon where TOPGUN is based has small numbers of personnel in comparison but land mass is about to be a million square miles with decades of dumping and permanently uninhabitable munition ranges. Local tribal people were granted it back after wwii but had it taken gain with the Korean War onset. Contamination and resource consumption here is obvious, these massive bases are beyond environmental reclamation.

... the UK as a whole is 60M acres.

They Navy only has about 200,000 active duty sailors. About 125,000 Marines. The Army is by far the largest military branch. Not sure what the Air Force has typical since the introduction of Space Force.

I agree with you there mate I'm a fellow sand dancer from south Shields and I think our forces definitely need to up our game the marines have downsized asmuch as the navy what happend to the good old days where Britannia ruled the waves man!!! We should be once a conqueror allways a conqueror Britannia ruled the waves 100 year ago what has actually happened man we actually trained the Americans tactics of the 1st and 2nd world war they have listened and learnt while we have just stood back!!! We wouldn't have been anywhere if it wasn't for the ww2 commandos paving the way for the rest of the world why have we actually let it become the way it is!!

Technically the US Marines are part of the US Navy. But I'd keep that quiet when walking around a US Marine base... (Discretion is the better part of valor, and all that.) Make no mistake, all branches specialize, and when it hits we'll need all of them.

If your a Marine chances are very good you'll end up on a Naval base of some kind somewhere. The Marine are part of the Department of the Navy, Soooo, They tend to go where the Navy goes.

11:49 so the Marines are actually only deployable if the president says so like the army in the Air Force they need Congress and house to tell him to go to war but the Marines only work for the president and yes the Marines do have some bases but primarily the Marines use the Navy and the Air Force basically as a taxi service the Marines will live on naval bases Air Force bases and operate out of those bases
