      Its an attempt to get the black vote which is what a politician should do. Make promises and uphold those promises to earn a group's vote. Now will they actually do shit except "consider, look into, set up a committee" probably not. So yes getting politicians to do our bidding for our vote is good but lip service for our vote is bad

    Instead of reparations to specific people, how about using the funds to work on the massive socio-economic consequences of slavery and discrimination? Help out predominantly black neighborhoods, improve schooling so school zones don't change the amount of funds received, etc? I feel like because neither side can come together to fix the unjust systems that contribute to more modern discrimination, politicians feel like the only way to help is with a direct deposit that is only a one-time help. That won't fix the consequences of slavery that still affect black communities.
    (One day later ... So, a lot of people have a lot of different viewpoints to share below, but what I noticed is every 30 comments or so are either anti-Black or anti-white remarks. So let's be clear - those who are angry at white people, please remember that this generation is not the one that enslaved you or kept you. The racism that exists now is most of the time accidental and based on systemic issues rather than deliberate malicious intent. Those who are angry at black people, or who think the black community is holding a grudge, try to remember that while slavery has ended many of the African-American community still experience rampant racism, police brutality, and an unjust justice system. Anger is a reaction to perceived injustice and so if you're noticing they're angry it is a justified response. Both sides are human beings. We're prone to mistakes, feelings, and remorse. Let's all respect that.)

      I agree. It's just a weird concept to me. Yes, slavery was a horrible thing but I don't think it truly affects a slave's descendant that greatly in our time. There are much more recent injustices towards black people, not just decendants of slaves, that affect their daily lives much more.
      I don't really like the notion of donating wildly, your option seems much more rational to me. If the US were to apologize financially for their past crimes, they'd have to start with Afghanistan, Iraq and even more importantly, Vietnam, where there are still millions of people crippled by the effects of agent orange.

      @BeeWhistler Před 5 lety +24

      Yeah... if they'd paid the reparations to the slaves themselves, or opted to pay them to any families who still have second or third generation people still living, that might work. But I think a lot of people would ask that the money be invested in training cops to be decent human beings.

In fact, you're more likely to be murdered if you are an American Indian woman--way too many disappear never to be found every year! American Indians were also enslaved. Would the reparations extend to them? And what about people who don't look black but who have ancestors who were enslaved. Would they be compensated, too? I opposed racism in any form. I also oppose classicism in any form, but we must consider the ramifications of the signals we send if we compensate some, but not all who are affected by racism, misogyny, and enforced poverty.

      I’m sorry that’s what happens to you and I wish it wasn’t that way, but there’s no logical reasoning behind me, not a slave-owner, paying you, not a slave, money that I rightfully and legally obtained. If the government back in the 1860s made it so former slave-owners must pay a certain amount to the now freed slaves, that wouldn’t be equal in any way but that would have been one logical way to give back in at least a little bit of money. Now, it’s simply irrelevant. I’m not saying slavery is irrelevant, or the struggles of black peoples are irrelevant, I’m saying that slavery is irrelevant, I’m saying that it wouldn’t have an effect other than as a symbolic gesture. I’ll give an example that’s very toned down to the actual gravity of slavery. I’m not sure if you have an older sibling, but I do, and some teachers didn’t like having my brother in class. So when I came along, they immediately thought the worst of me. I had to prove to my teachers that I was a better student in class than my brother. Hopefully this makes sense, but in this example, my brother would be my ancestors (although as far as I know I had no slave owning ancestors but for the sake of the example we’ll say I did) my teacher represents African American people as a whole, and I represent white people as a whole. Now, what my brother did was wrong, undisputedly, should he have been punished? Yes, of course. Now should I be punished? No I shouldn’t. Simply because we’re not the same person. He should’ve been held accountable, but I can’t be held accountable for something I didn’t do. And also to your other point, I do agree that there is racism in this country. Sadly, there always will be. I know I’m not a racist person, I don’t know you but I’d assume you aren’t either, unfortunately there are racist people. I’m not sure how you’re going to interpret my frickin essay I just wrote, but hopefully it comes off in an understanding and reasonable way.

That said, if USA were to pay reparations, they’d go bankrupt because the inhumane treatment and the pain they caused is immeasurable. USA, its wealth and superpower position, was built on the backbones of black people. A better solution would be to actively resist racial injustice that is still happening in USA and direct more funds to develop black neighborhoods and save the black youth from the circle of hopelessness that still persist today.

    1#. HEIR. At common law. A person who succeeds, by the rules of law , to an estate in lands, tenements, or hereditaments, upon the death of his ancestor, by descent and right of relationship. The term “heir” has a very different signification at common law from what it has in those states and countries which have adopted the civil law. In the latter, the term is indiscriminately applied to all persons who are called to the succession, whether by the act of the party or by operation of law. The person who is created universal successor by a will is called the “ testamentary heir; “ and the next of kin by blood is, in cases of in testacy, called the “ heir at law,” or “ heir by intestacy.” The executor of the common law in many respects corresponds to the testamentary heir of the civil law. Again, the administrator in many respects corresponds with the heir by intestacy. By the common law, executors and administrators have no right except to the personal estate of the deceased; whereas the heir by the civil law is authorized to administer both the personal and real estate. I have no idea what they went through back then, or how much blood they personally spilled, so I have no right to demand money or apologies for something that I did not experience. Last I checked, I didn't have any whip scars on my back. The ones who truly deserve anything at all are dead or close to it. They already pathed the way for black folk to succeed. They are all just back at the stupidity again. You don't agree with them then you are racist and should pay them money because they are all butt hurt. Stop trying to take other folks' money and go make your own. Just take, take, take, and when there is nothing left, they burn shit down and have temper tantrums, then blame it on a cop or anyone who isn't black. I work hard and make my own money, I don't need reparations, never saw any money from the first one, and could care less about this new one. If that's the case, then the whole world deserves reparations. Blacks were not the only slaves, you don't see Jewish people getting on tv and whining.
