Mitoma probably has one of the most unique and strange journeys to becoming a professional footballer that I’ve ever seen. From being recognized at a young age as a skilled prodigy within Japan who dreamed of one day making it to the pros only and eventually being offered a legitimate professional footballing contract - to then turn around and instead pursue a degree in sports science.
But why not accept the contract and start your career right? Well, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Because as crazy as that sounds, it seems like it’s starting to pay off. And now with Mitoma finally starting to make a name for himself in the global and European stage just in the past few months alone - I think it’s time you all heard his story.
Shoutout to SVMM for the compilation at the end! Here's his channel: www.youtube.com/@svmm/featured

Study and Theory > Natural talent and practice
A path that is rarely tried and rarely executed in such an amazing manner
As mentioned, he is neither the fastest nor the strongest nor the most naturally gifted player, but he uses his mega mind to optimize every scenario he finds himself in. He wasn’t regular in any of the sides he played for, he turned the ball over way too often, he couldn’t really score, and had absolutely atrocious international records. The only reason his name still gets mentioned here and there is because of him being the first Japanese player who was brought into Europe to sell jerseys and the Japanese media milking every last drop of his false hype. That and kids playing him in FIFA and thinking FIFA is a good indicator of greatness.

He saw that his other U-18 teammates Itakura Kou (Now at Borussia Monchengladbach) and Miyoshi Koji (Now at Royal Antwerp) were promoted to the first team but barely getting any minutes despite being good. Kawasaki Frontale has the best youth system in Japan but they put a lot of emphasis on foreigners because they want to dominate J.League and AFC Champion's League so instead of giving minutes to youngster they give it to foreigners.

Besides his excellent dribble, he is very humble, and calm. For example, the last game against Liverpool, the defender intentionally hit his face right inside box. He didn’t fall down or get upset. Just used his hand to massage his cheek. He eventually scored the winning goal. He is a role model for young kids.

He reminds me when I was young, imagining how I would get out of some situations. A lot of us did that when we were younger. We would perform some dribbles alone while imagining how our opponent would react to a feint and then comes the trick lol. While growing up, we usually stop that. I myself had quite few successful dribbles. Mitoma took it seriously and now he's destroying some defense. He makes me want to go back in the past and do it properly. If I was 12 years old, I would read his thesis and practice. I think japanese kids will take his thesis seriously, specially the strikers and midfielders. I'll keep that in my mind, in 10 years we might see some smooth skillers from Japan thanks to Mitoma.

Going to university before joining a pro team is far from "unusual". There are four other Japanese players in the UK alone who went to uni before entering the pro ranks, and some of Japan's most famous historical stars went to university (everyone from Gon Nakayama to Yuto Nagatomo). The university leagues in Japan are quite competitive and several schools are in the fourth and fifth tier of Japan's pyramid. In fact, a lot of teams go out of their way to scout and sign university grads. Kashima Antlers, among others, has a long history of signing guys out of university and turning them into star players.
