I have watched your videos throughout the entire of my project and it’s been an absolute pleasure watching. This is my first bmw 325 I bought it for 500 bucks in great condition with a blown head gasket. Ran and drove no problem minus the usual head gasket issues. I get the car together everything is good except it won’t have constant flow through the injectors again everything was working fine. It will pop off and die once and not again unless it sits

    Hey @50skid
My bmw e46 has good cranking power, did do a fuel compression test just by priming the fuel and saw some fuel squirt out with some compression. My neighbor had a spark plug tester and he said he saw spark in cylinder 1 and still can’t get it to fire up! Your videos are awesome by the way. I had a code last time I took it to get my service engine light checked and it said it was running lean so I’m wondering what to do next. Should I go and buy a Diagnostic scanner and see what codes it’s throwing out? Not a real knowledgeable guy on mechanics but do love to get my hands dirty and learn so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I've watched a bunch of your videos and you've really helped me on my son's E46 - enough so that I bought an E39 with a crank no start condition a few weeks ago prior to you publishing this video.
Here's my input that may or may not help some folks:
    1) checked fuel - fuel pump hum and ~50# of fuel pressure at the rail
    2) spark on all 6 plugs
    3) air intake hoses okay but CCV drain hose split which was expected due to other codes. Replaced CCV and related hoses.
    4) crank sensor showed RPMs during cranking
    5) exhaust cam sensor had a code but checked okay
    6) intake cam sensor did not show any codes so I assumed okay
    7) performing a compression check when the battery died - a couple of cylinders were showing low compression - odd for an engine with 130k miles. Pulled all the plugs while the battery recharged
    8) learned that if the MAF could possibly cause a no start but if it is disconnected it would still run
    9) reinstalled plugs before completing the compression test and disconnect the MAF - car started!
    10) checked by reconnecting MAF and it started again and has ever since.
I think the car was flooded (with fuel) which can occur with a cold start and then shut down.

This was my case, suddenly me e39 (m52b25tu) was driving fine a few hours prior before i parked it and when i got in i did a cold start but accidently let my fingers slip off the key so that the engine didnt crank long enough to start. I ofcourse tried to start it but it oddly didnt, so assuming it went into safe mode not causing fuel floods as the next morning i got in and it started fine. So guessing pulling the battery did the trick to fix it.

Hello, I know this is quite a bit to ask but I believe one of my intake cylinder head valves was bent after I finished replacing the valve cover gasket. I made sure all the connections were tight and back in the right spot. Car misfires really loudly, shakes violently, loud metal banging sound, and then dies after a minute of this. Would it be possible for you to make a video on how to replace one of these? I've looked around but can't seem to find a full step by step. Car is a e46 330ci 120,000 miles

Hi 50sKid, what do you exactly mean by "... maybe cranked with the vanos out..."?
What exactly is vanos in this case? Is it these two toothed weels where the chain is mounted on or do you mean these two vanos solenoids with the electrical connectors on them?
If you mean the two toothed wheels, I can imagine that the timing would be off if cranked without them but can timing be off by cranking without those two solenoids plugged in into the engine case?
Great videos man!!! Your work helped me out a lot! Thank you!

Hi, i need help with my car problem, the problem is my car crank but won't start, i checked injector signal, there's no signal, i checked ignition coil, there's also no signal, then i checked all fuse and relay, there's no fault. After that i checked all the wiring on engine, there's no problem with the wire harness, lastly i checked the ecm/ecu, i bring it to ecu repair shop they checked no faulty and i pay charge for checking usd60, after that, i try to start again, its still won't start, then i bring the ecm/ecu again to the bmw agent for checking with charge usd100, they also said there's no faulty with the ecu/ecm. I checked the fuel pump its working, i checked the pressure of fuelpump its working perfect. I checked the immobiliser, also no problem, Im still wondering with the problem and why my ignition coil and injector no power and no signal. Hey 50sKid.
    I got a big problem with my '03 E46 325 xi
It won't start but seems to crank. It started with the battery light turning on. And then while driving it slowly started dying. The battery seems to be good since the lights come on.
I tried turning it on this morning and it did turn on. But started vibrating bad and like all the lights on the dashbiard come on.
I recently replaced all spark plugs and ignition coils.
And also replaced the MAF sensor.
It did misfire before this issue with not turning on properly.
    What do you think?

When it comes to fuel pumps on a E46 you should be able to hear it kick in when the key is turned. If you don't check the fuses and the relay. In my experience I see the relays fail much sooner than the actual pump. The fuses are easy to get to while the relay check requires you to pull the glove box.

Hi Both, Great video and must say love all your videos- been very helpful, thanks so much. I do have a crank no start issue and through ages of fault finding I'm still not starting. I have no fuel pump priming or pressure on cranking. I have no incoming signal to the fuel pump relay, but relay itself and all fuses have been tested and are good (including bank of 5 in the engine bay). When turning key to position 2 the relay doesnt click open. I'm led to believe it was something to do with the EWS - DME sync code but I have tried resetting this (well in BMW Scanner 1.4 it seems to just say "EWS-DME adaptation"- is that the right thing?? Either way i did this successfully and also recoded my instrument cluster as Ismail talks about. Still have the same problem... No incoming signal to fuel relay. I'm really banging my head against the wall. I presume the EWS is good and ignition is good as i get cranking and also get 12v delivered to my coil packs when cranking. Its a real challenge- Can you help please?

Hello. I have a crank no start situation. I replaced the fuel filter(new), fuel pressure regulator(junkyard) and crankshaft position sensor(autozone). I changed this because I replaced the head gasket. The car started prior to the repairs but no it won’t so I’m pretty sure a fuel pump would not die like that. I don’t really smell any fuel while cranking and I can’t say for certain if the fuel pump is running. Any recommendations??

If you don't replace it, the car will be much faster because you will have really short gears. You will have to shift twice as fast and your max speed will be like 100mph. Most kids love this but I personally wanted a more balanced car, so i got the manual diff to make it a little less quick and give it a higher cruising speed.

I put the front end on along with plugging in coolant sensors and it won't start now... Just cranking. I didn't touch ANYTHING I'm so clueless. I tried to clear the old CEL's and my scanner said there were still 11 codes remaining. I have double checked every connector is plugged in and vacuum lines ran correctly. I can here the fuel pump priming and have good fuel pressure. I haven't checked for spark but I did pull my plugs and they looked fine. Any tips?

Hey guys, I have a 98' 528i. It was throwing a camshaft position sensor circuit a code, so I replaced the sensor twice with oem-brand parts, and while I still have a check engine light and the code remains, the performance was not effected (did the sensor 6 months ago).
It wasn't until recently that I started having some issues. It randomly would crank no start, and you couldn't even push it start it. This would happen after driving the car, turning it off for a couple minutes, and trying to turn it back on. It would do this a lot at some point, until recently I replaced the CRANKshaft position sensor, and it went back to normal, and wouldn't do it, for the most part.
When it had the issue, you would let it sit for 10 minutes, and it would start right up.
However, today I went out to the car, and it wouldn't start at all, even after sitting all night. Battery levels are perfectly fine and all the interior lights are perfect. It would crank super strong, and but wouldn't fire at all.
The exact same thing it had before, but this time it didn't have to do with me driving it before.
Something interesting is that in the past few days my key fob wouldn't unlock the car at random points after sitting for an hour or more, and my key wouldn't even unlock the doors in the physical door itself. Funny enough, I found a solution that would it to work again is unlocking the trunk with the key, and closing the trunk. Every time I've had this issue, the key fob/door lock would work perfectly fine immediately. It's like it resets it or something. Don't know if it is related at all, but thought it would be a possibility. Any thoughts on this?? Could it be the camshaft sensor wiring? Any help would be hugely appreciated! Thank you!

And it will not necessarily throw code unless you have a completely failed sensor. If your sensor returns any kind of signal back to the DME it will not throw code. Eventually with enough cranking you may get a synchronization code but most times unless it's 100% dead you won't.

  • @anthonyhumbert8787

Seeing digital multimeter to check a cam or a crank sensor, unless you're multimeter has a super fast sample rating you're not going to get a verification of a good or bad reading. It's simply too fast for most multimeters to be able to pick it up. Now if you have an old school analog meter with this the arm you can check with those if you see the arm sweep back and forth you got a good sensor if not you got a bad sensor.
