    Citroen's Berlingo People Carrier has come a long way. We check out the third generation version and wonders if families really need to pay more for pricier mid-sized MPVs.
    Try and picture a van-based compact people carrier. Bet you weren't imagining anything quite as nice as this. The MK3 model version of Citroen's much more civilised third generation Berlingo people carrier has been further distanced from its predecessors' basic commercial roots. With smarter styling, more equipment and efficient PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel engines, this value-for-money five or seven-seater is now a vehicle that demands to be taken very seriously indeed. If you're after a budget family carry-all, it's well worth a look.

      I'm 6 feet tall and I like my seat position quite high and I'm concerned that the central storage running along the centre of the car and the top side forward storage might prove intrusive and potentially be a head strike hazard in any incident or in the latter case also reduce forward vision. A proper review! Very helpful in helping me decide to buy a Berlingo XL Flair for use as a daily car but also a camper / tourer..One day, companies like Citroen will wake up to a sizeable market segment that wants their vehicle to be a camper, and offer options like a preinstalled leisure battery, extra insulation and a false floor and side panels, ready to be screwed into for custom designed DIY campers.

    I had an early first generation 2L HDi and have just completed 70,000 miles in my second generation 2012 XTR (it's done >90k miles in total). These are still the best cars I have ever owned. The only thing I think is a backward step is that the rear seats no longer lift out, which reduces load capacity. I will probably replace my second generation one in a few years - either with a low mileage gen 2 or a used gen 3. Once you get used to them you wonder how you ever got by with the limitations of a normal car...

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 Před 3 lety

      "...backward step is that the rear seats no longer lift out..."
      It should be well understood that "modern" cars as a general rule of thumb DO NOT have removable/lifting/rotating seats. Due to "safety" implementations!
      I had 1998 Mercedes A class. Front passenger seat could be removed with 1 lever! Next generation bolted in place!
      Citroen Xsara Picasso battery easily accessible under the driver seat. Seat lifted by 2 levers, very easy system! Later models bolted in place! Battery access became a nightmare...
      All rear seats were removable! Later Picasso incarnation, bolted and foldable... no longer removable!
      Renault Espace once had rotating seats, later generations lost it.
      Earlier vans and van based cars had handle on A pillar to facilitate user ingress. Another detail that you won't find nowadays. But still present on heavy vehicles. That don't have to comply with the same EuroNcap tests! ;-)

    • @granthostheflatulent
      @granthostheflatulent Před 3 lety +3

      @@crpth1 Progress huh! Since posting my comment a year ago Blingy has now done almost 120,000 miles and still not missed a beat. Clutch is getting tired but I've decided I am going to accept spending money on maintenance and will be keeping it until the UK bans diesels or it it rusts away. It's still the best car I have ever had.

    I found this review fascinating, not only for the vehicle, but for the cultural perspective as well. Here in Canada, we don't have access to Citroens or Peugeots. If you're a typical van person, you'd end up with a Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, or a Kia Sedona. I'm an owner of a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew Plus, old technology in some respects, but comfortable. If you want to see the difference in the design mindset, have a look at the CZcams reviews of for example the Grand Caravan Crew Plus or the GT. @OSV, I think you will find that Citroen did not invent the LSV type Vehicles because In the UK they date back to the Hillman Minx/Humber 2 door Panel Van/Wagon Variants by the Rootes Group back in the late 1950's early 1960's Also Vauxhall Viva also Made one as did Ford with the Anglia and then the Escort.

    A refreshingly honest, unbiased review of an improved version of an excellent existing model. If I had new car money, I'd be off to do a deal at my local Citroen dealer. Why anyone tries to kid themselves that the SUV option is an intelligent move beggars belief. Ok a more car based MPV might look a bit sassier on the driveway, but if that justifies spending £3k more, well again, more fool them as does so! I feel it is a shame that a really basic version cannot be had in the UK, likewise, the non availability of the triple rear seat is Citroen shooting themselves in the foot imho. Frankly, to get something as useful as the triple rear seat shouldn't have to include a lot of the electronics, and other unnecessary trim bits of the higher spec car. Come on Citroen, do the decent thing! I also have an issue with so many manufacturers insisting that white (the colour of least imagination) is the only no extra cost colour. Not everyone want's to emulate the poor sap, base model BMW and Audi drivers who could have so much more with a different grille badge!
    Sadly, unless my lottery numbers come up tonight, I'll have to carry on with my rather secondhand C4 Picasso......but hey, that's not a major problem.

      Top Gear is a prog about fast cars, designed for the profitable younger market, more gullible and with a greater spend ability for toys, flash, and shiny stuff combined with a desperate desire to be noticed, but in the end we all have to grow up, buy a house and have to move stuff, this is for those "once youngsters". Different market, different audience, as you say a good solid review. The awkward rear door I haven't seen mentioned before, on a commercial version this would be totally impractical, so why does the poor punter get the rubbish version ? Again good review.

    Good review, the first gen has been in our family for years (just hit 200.000km) and my father of course is looking at the new version. Still, I am quite amused about the French sense of beauty as I think the XTR version looks a little silly with the garish orange detailing and the odd top roof thingy.

    We had two Mk 1 and now have a Mk2. with all they are practical vehicles just like a proper estate car. You carry five people then you need to be able to carry the baggage of five people. One big advantage of the Berlingo/Partner/Rifter is the floor height of the luggage space - so many of the modern wedge-shaped vehicles require one to hire a fork-lift truck to load and unload the baggage.

    Have run an 06 incarnation 1 (1.6Hdi) for nearly 13 years and 150000 miles and the appeal was its van like nature which has never been a problem. It carted filthy kids, mountain bikes and stuff around flawlessly and only ever had (other than regular services) a cambelt, waterpump, 1 injector seal and a battery and starter motor.
    The Mk2 version was mildly focus group sanitised but they lowered it too much in the ground clearance department for some of the places I go.
    With the Mk3 version they seem to have lost the plot as it has drifted so far from its roots, got middle aged spread, has far too much trim in the load area and too many gadgets.
    Result, too bulky, too heavy and too pricey.
    I'm loathed to replace it but it has had it's day and unfortunately this new one will not be taking it's place.
    P.S. Good review, watched it all and it proved to me that the new version basically doesn't do anything for me....

      That is the problem. We've had French van cars now for what seems like ever. Best things ever. But each iteration gets bigger and more expensive. I wish the dacia dokker was in the UK. It starts at 10k EUR.

    • @graemepilkington3080
      @graemepilkington3080 Před 5 lety +1

      @@Benjamin.Jamin. I thought the same, would have quite readily considered the Dokker but as the kids have grown up the bikes can now go on a rack and I'm awaiting the delivery of a 2019 Suzuki Jimny within the next 2 weeks. Yeah its smaller but the Berlingo has had its back seat permanently folded down for the last 4 years but it is arguably 5K cheaper which offsets the extra thirst of the 1.5 petrol. Has no turbo, no dpf, 4WD, loads of ground clearance, different to drive, loads of character and is square with a big door at the back.
      I predict that this incarnation will not sell as well as the first or second and residual values will be percentage wise worse.
      Good news in 3/4 years for ex PCH/PCP bargains.
