The Grasshoppers - Shortnin' Bread

  • Seriously. It's the Grasshoppers performing the song Shortnin' Bread in 1964. The 1958 release of the first Chipmunks record was bound to usher in imitators, and in 1959 one such group vying for the helium-voiced mantle was called the Grasshoppers. Their name might be a misnomer, though, since the album cover the posted song appeared on clearly shows that their bass player was a frog. I'm surprised no fans sued over this misrepresentation. At any rate, the Crickets moniker had already been taken by Buddy Holly's group -- and Jiminy had scored a hit with "When You Wish Upon A Star" -- so grasshoppers were one of the few orthoptera left available to use as a desirable moniker, it would appear. For a time the Grasshoppers were locked in a messy legal dispute with a Cleveland band using the same name who allegedly had threatened them with DDT, but the case was settled out of court.
The singing insects (and possibly one amphibian; I'm still not sure where that bass playing frog fits into the group's dynamic) had a human overseer to keep the lads in line, just like the Chipmunks. But enough talk, let's just enjoy the song. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you THE GRASSHOPPERS singing SHORTNIN' BREAD!

Thank you, "lstash," for that link to the blog about The Grasshoppers. But my specific question, about which of these two, studio-created novelty acts--The Chipmunks and The Grasshoppers--was the first to record a Beatles-inspired record (including Beatles' covers), is not answered there. What is noted is The Chipmunks preceded The Grasshoppers conceptually. I had already guessed that.
I will research the matter further and report back here.

These insects were quite talented. Did they ever appear on the Ed Sullivan show?

Well, you may clearly hear the human voice call one of The Grasshoppers "Leroy." And it sounds as if "Leroy" is calling that human voice "Jimmy" (which also happens to be one of my nicknames). So, presumably, this "Jimmy" is the David Seville of this project, if The Grasshoppers are following in the mode of The Chipmunks. This would also mean "Jimmy" is actually the voice of all The Grasshoppers. but his voice sped up by 1/4 to affect the higher-pitched Grasshoppers' voices.

The original names of the "Grasshoppers", on their first two albums in 1959, were "Dennis", "Archie", and "Ricky"....and their human friend was "Eddie Maynard".

There was also a live-action, Cleveland-based group called The Grasshoppers, which featured Ben Orr (Benjamin Orzechowski), later of the 1970s' New Wave band from Boston known as The Cars. Orr sang some of The Cars' hits, Ric Ocasek the others.
Even though these studio-created Grasshoppers were in existence at the same time as the live Cleveland band, the latter won a lawsuit for first use of the name.

I've just found out about a website that answers the Grasshoppers / Chipmunks question you've raised. I've put the link for it at the end of this video's description (About/Show more).

What does the rear of the album jacket actually say about this "group?" I have this LP, but it's been separated from me, in storage for many years now. And, actually, The Chipmunks also recorded an album of Beatles' songs. I would like to know which came first, The Grasshoppers or The Chipmunks-as-The Beatles? In any case, this album cover is very cool, very memorable.

Such a ripoff - I mean, tribute - to Alvin and the Chipmunks.
