      Most consumers agree: see the Steam hardware surveys. Just like the Titan, these are “halo” products designed for professionals and to build hype for the new tech (thanks in part to media like LTT) while they sell off the last generation and build the manufacturing capacity for the mass-market.
      The branding might be less distinctive, but these cards still aren’t for gamers to buy even without the “Titan” label.

  • @Zosu22

    The fact that $1000+ GPUs have been normalized for gaming is kind of unfortunate.

  • @justarandomgamer6058
    @justarandomgamer6058 Před rokem +190

    Why is it so hard for NVIDIA to simply develop cards in the 40 series ranging from $600-1200 instead of these inflated prices.
    They need to spend more time working on lowering costs and overall powerdraw before they continue working on performance.

    • @supersic822
      @supersic822 Před rokem +47

      It's not hard for them to lower the cost nor does it make sense for them to do so. The prices are this way because people are willing to pay the price. If people stop buying the cards the prices will start dropping.

    • @danepher
      @danepher Před rokem +5

      He already brought some reasons and one of them is that everybody have risen their prices and other companies also compete for manufacturing time and batches.
      But they will have cards in the $600-1200 price range as well like the 4070/4060/4050.
      The 4090/4080, with all do respect, is not intended for the average person/gamer. It's for those that have the money.
      The 4090 is actually more for intended for professional work or work stations that need it. Or hobbyists that need that kind of perfomance

    • @chlbrn
      @chlbrn Před rokem +12

      @@danepher I am a 3d artist and I use gpu renderer to render still images and animations. My first workstation was powered by a GTX Titan and that GPU was priced around $1000. To me, the price for 4090 is too much, $1200 ~ $1300 is reasonable and for 4080, it should be like $699 to $799 and 12GB variant should be $599. Nvidia just screws everyone like what they did in last 2 years.

    • @danepher
      @danepher Před rokem +2

      @@chlbrn The last 2 years were met with a chip shortage. Nvidia/AMD is not solely responsible for closing of chip fabs in china and Taiwan and other manufacturers that need to bring materials to create those chips. Look around you, absolutely everything goes up in price and inflation only adds on top of it. Of course it will costs more. Add to it also the raising salaries and obviously those prices will go high.
      Add to that the demand from scalpers and miners, and you get 2 years of inflated prices. Nvidia didn't fuck you up. Or at least not solely responsible for prices. EVGA for example and NVIDIA continued selling at the MSRP prices, but everything was bought either by miners or scalpers.
      TSMC and Samsung also just raised their prices for manufacturing of chips.
      You cannot increase supply on a whim. And all manufacturing factories are sold out for a long time.

    • @XMG3
      @XMG3 Před rokem +6

    Take a closer look at the difference in CUDA cores. There's an absolutely MASSIVE gap between the 4090 and "4080 16GB" which is unprecedented. The true 80-tier card has not been announced yet and will more than likely land in between the two of them as a Ti or something.
    More concerning yet, if you compare the difference between the core counts of 90, 80, 70 and 60-tier cards in this release versus previous releases, you'll find the 4080 16GB is far more in-line with what a 70-tier card should have and the 4080 12GB is pretty much smack dab where the 60-tier card would land. Every 60-tier card has came with 50% the flagship's core count with a 192-bit memory bus. That's exactly the case here with the 4080 12GB.

    Well, to correct you about raytracing and threadedness, even though you have to calculate all bounces of a single ray sequentially and therefore in a single thread, ray tracing itself is still embarrassingly parallelizable, because you still (normally) have to calculate many rays per pixel (maybe Nvidia has changed that now with their AI denoiser), and you still have to calculate that for all pixel (which Nvidia has also changed with their AI super resolution upscaler). Since the all of those rays are mutually independent, they can all be computed in parallel. So raytracing is not at all naturally a single threaded task.
    I'm guessing that what this is about is, as you say, to prevent the part of the GPU that is responsible for shading, which cannot help the ray tracer in its work, from having to wait while the ray tracing is being calculated, by just ray tracing small chunks of the image at a time to quickly give the shader something to work on. This has nothing to do with enabling threading, though.

    Here the requested correction:
    No, raytracing is a massively parallel task, because the ray bounces just *accumulate* samples. Hence we have tons of cores in CPU render farms, and GPUs are useful - memory and bandwidth limitations aside.
    Accumulation means summing, as such there is no dependency between rays: you usually hit tons of rays for tons of samples at the same time. What NVIDIA seems to do, based on their website, is batch similar samples from same materials to make the shader execution faster internally. Probably less state changes for the shader execution. There is currently no more information available, but the developer portal mentions availability on October 12, which coincides with the release of the cards. Cheers.

    • @Bendoughver
      @Bendoughver Před rokem +2

      You're right, but wanted to give some more context. Raytracing is parallel task but tracing a single ray is a not. As you said you make assumptions that certain rays can be grouped together, but you need to know the end path in order to compute the next path, you can do this in parallel, but higher framerates demands even faster tracing and throwing more "cores" at it doesn't necessarily make it faster. The likelihood is that they have updated the silicon or the "cores" that do the processing for the motion vectors to be faster. My guess is that they updated the tensor cores which handles "denoising" of the bounding volume hierarchy generated from the RT cores.

      I bet we don’t see a 4060 or 4070 announcement this year. It will come in the summer as 3060 and 3070 supply starts to dry. Typically you don’t see anything but the high end cards take huge price cuts because the lower tiered cards are priced closer to cost to start with as they are the volume movers. 80 series is where the volume and profit swell and 90 series is a halo product (not meant to be high volume so higher profit margin is baked in) that they can slash pricing on towards the end and still make money.
      I will say this again also, expecting an AIB to be able to get under the “MSRP” set by NVIDIAs FE card is not going to happen. NVIDIA doesn’t sell NVIDA the die, they do sell the die to the AIB. This is part of the why EVGA dipped. MSRP based on FE cards is asinine and NVIDIA is manipulating the market with it. NVIDIA directly competes with the AIBs now.

    Back in my day, the RTX 4090 would've been called a GTX (insert generation number) 80 and it would've costed 1/4th of the price. what's sad is that it really wasn't that long ago. 10 years ago, a GTX 680 cost $499 but could be had for around $400 if you bargain shopped a bit. Nvidia is pricing themselves out of the market here. Things are supposed to get better gen over gen at the same price point, but if you raise the price, all of a sudden all your technological gains don't look very attractive. Was waiting for the RTX 4080 (not the 12gb model which is really a RTX 4070) to upgrade my GTX 980, but at this point I'll just buy an RDNA3 card when those launch. Or if RDNA3 is too expensive, or consumes too much power, I'll get a used RTX 3080 for $499 and save $700... Never before has current gen looked like such a bad deal. not even the RTX 2080, and that was pretty awful. Before 20 series was announced I wanted to upgrade my GTX 980 but once it launched I realized the 2080 was launched it was just such a bad deal it wasn't worth it, so I was determined to wait for 30 series. The 30 series launch was garbage. Now that the 40 series launch is also too expensive, it's basically a 20 series repeat. Nvidia has lost my business for the time being. I've waited 3 generations for them to not screw up a launch and my hardware is closing in on a decade old, so either the used market or RDNA3 seems like the way to go.

      Brand new technology has never been for the intelligent consumer. The people who buy these things new are the people who want the BEST and want it RIGHT NOW! The 30 series are fantastic cards, and these new cards will drop the price of the last gen. The problem isn't Nvidia's pricing, it's what consumers want. And what consumers want is the absolute fastest product possible, no matter the cost or power consumption or size. If you want something cost effective, power efficient, and reasonable. Go buy a last gen AMD card. That's much more their market, and buying used or previous gen is always a better value. The only reason anyone gives a shit about Nvidia is because they have the best performance, using the very latest technology. Remember that 1nm is is just about 20 atoms across, the technology to reliably make magic sparky sand do what you want at that level is almost incomprehensively expensive and difficult to use. If you don't want to pay for 4nm magic sparky sand, then pay for something else. There are a LOT of other options, they're just worse because they cost less, and they're not new.

    Shader Execution Reorder is not about ray tracing being "single threaded". The inherently random process of path-tracing with monte-carlo Integration means that the rays bounces everyplace. On GPUs, everything is executed in groups (called a SIMT or Wavefront model), i.e a whole bunch of threads are grouped together and only achieves maximum throughput if they are executing the same code at the same time. With random sampling with in ray tracing, it means the GPU workgroups can't execute the same code thus causing slowdown. SER reorganizes and sorts the threads, thus regrouping similar workloads together, thus increasing efficiency and performance. This is still a very simplified answer, I do suggest LTT talk to a expert from Nvidia or AMD or Intel, to make a special video on explaining how the GPU works and why SER matters

    I suspect the SER is just out of order execution (OOO).
    I think about it in terms of laundry. Imagine you're getting ready for a wedding, but you realize you don't have any clean socks. There are two ways you could order your morning tasks to get ready.
    Take shower (1hr) -> Wash socks (1hr) -> Put on clothes (1hr) -> 3hr total
    In the above putting on clothes depends on our socks being clean so we have to stall for an hour before we can start putting on clothes.
    However if we reorder it a bit
    Wash socks (1hr) -> Take shower (1hr) -> Put on clothes (1hr) -> 2hr total
    There's no dependency between washing our socks and taking a shower so they can both execute in parallel. And more importantly can be reordered.
    Modern desktop processors implemented this optimization a long time ago, because reordering cannot be a purly compile time optimization since it also depends on the hardware resources accessible at run time. Nvidia probably didn't do this in early arch's because the speed of a GPU is largely driven by small simple cores, and OOO consumes hardware resources that could be used for more dumb cores.

    Very happy to see that EK is already producing Quantum Vector² FE RTX 4090 D-RGB GPU Water Block and ACTIVE BACKPLATES for those wanting the very BEST cooling possible (stability, overclocking potential, as well as an RGB amazing looking card from both top & bottom), effectively sandwiching their 40-series GPU between two water blocks linked with a single terminal. And of course, reducing the card from 4 or 5 slots worth of height (which is INSANE but required for the fans version - which STILL don't cool as much as a custom water loop with active front & active back plates) to just 1 slot in height also makes this even more attractive, as well as silent cooling.
    Personally, I am hoping Asus Rog Strix partner up with EK again, but this time have a RTX4090 GPU option which is sold already with water-cooled front & ACTIVE backplates, so that it saves people the hassle of doing it themselves, is suitable for people too nervous to install one themselves, as well as coming with an out of the box warranty for all parts, & looking amazing with RGB from the top even if you mount the GPU in the conventional manner rather than vertically.

    • @TimLongson

      Most people are too nervous to install a water block themselves, which is why it just makes sense for the GPU manufacturers to have options to buy one that comes pre-installed with active front & active back water-cooling (the "premium cooling option"). Not only does it remove the chance that WE break it, it also means you buy a card with a warranty, rather than losing the warranty by water blocking it yourself. It also seems wasteful to pay for cooling fans & heat pipes just to waste (creating e-waste) them when you remove them to water block.

    @ianfitchett2768 Před rokem +1

    In the article you showed in the video, it says pretty explicitly that the 5nm node (the one fabricating the 40 series) cost is increasing "as much as 10%". Only 16nm+ nodes are increasing close to 20% which is not relevant. I don't know where you got the 30% number from.
    So yeah, TSMC is part of the reason our GPU costs are going up, but it's 10%, not 20-30%. Also the fabrication costs are only a fraction of the total production costs, of which much is R&D. So you can't even say Nvidia passing this cost to the consumer would result in a 10% change in price. The TSMC price increase is because of "extraordinary demand", with apple, amd, and Nvidia all bidding for production on the same node. This means that rDNA 3 gpu's are also going to be affected.
    Nvidia reportedly paid a huge amount of money to reserve a large amount of TSMC production to meet the massive GPU demand, but this seems to have been a miscalculation, as demand has since dropped considerably and Nvidia is struggling to move old inventory. Nvidia apparently tried to cancel a portion of its orders but TSMC said no. So now Nvidia are in a tough situation where they supposedly have committed to producing too many cards. This plus reports that they've been holding 40 series cards in warehouses since August (I'm not sure how unusual that is) suggest that they are trying to delay this launch as much as possible. They are trying to delay flooding an already surplus supply of GPU's. If demand doesn't pick back up in that time, Nvidia will eventually be sat with the decision between cutting into their margins to lower the price to demand, or creating an artificial scarcity by selling cards at inflated cost and eating the cost of their surplus. Like, maybe Nvidia is just trying to "normalize higher prices", but it's not that simple. They are competing with AMD to sell things that cost a lot of money to produce. They have already paid to produce these things, they can't make money by stubbornly sticking to prices that don't get these things off shelves.
    This is why the rDNA 3 announcement is going to be so telling, because it could clue us into how much of these price increases are actually because of cost increases and how much are Nvidia trying to strong arm the market.
    There has been so much market volatility in the time these chips have been designed that price volatility is a natural consequence. During the shortage we saw that MSRP didn't matter in an unstable market. We could see the opposite of that in a coming surplus, where Nvidia can tell us a 4070 is worth $900 but that won't mean that people will buy them for that much.

I know, its 2 years old card still being sold at MSRP, but in comparison with 4xxx series and their prices and power usage - 3xxx series seems to be the best buy for best ratio of price/performance.

      yes, nvidia is leaving a HUGE door open for intel to step in with a value option.

    can you do a video where you explain why video drivers from nvidia are getting corrupt it example I can see my google name pixelated and my monitor is stuck at 120 and not 144 when this happens I constantly have to reinstall the drivers

    I hope we get to see AMD's GPU's soon and how they compare. I really want to switch to AMD but if AMD ends up falling way behind in every day, it's going to be tough to switch.

      I jumped ship when the 20** was out and purchased an RX5700XT. The reviews were terrible, but I had next to no issues and have since purchased an RX6700XT that was slightly used (less than six months old and in an entertainment PC) for £300. I could not be happier, I have not fallen for the ray tracing BS and only really want to play games (Rust mainly) and the Misses is loving playing Rust with the RX5700XT, so it was a win win. Still wait for reviews, but do not forget about second hand versions of the last gen. Good luck Sir.

      3000 series is currently alot more reasonably priced. If you dont mind 2nd hand ownership, you can also check the used market for people who are offloading their 3000 cards to help cover thr expenses of a 4000 card

      @@killtyrant as much as that sounds really good for the consumers, I'd rather personally not buy from these miners which are one of the reasons why NVIDIA is pricing things like this now. My last hope is AMD and Intel to dominated the midrange section.

      GTX 980 owner here. I'm thinking of getting new build and this time I'll go with AMD. This prices are just crazy and for my needs, it isn't justifiable. Getting better price/performance ratio with AMD this time around.

      Wait till AMD also releases a expensive card. AMD is not a non profit organisation. Everyone is in business to make money.

      Couple things worth mentioning
      1. Not all used cards are from miners
      2. Theres alot of evidence that points to miner cards being just as well as other used/new cards. So that's just personal preference.
      3. At the end of the day, if you're buying your card for a fraction of what a miner paid, how does that effect you specifically? You still only paid the reduced price and the person you bought it from paid the premium.
      Too many people (including tech tubers) are too invested what other people are doing and they should be focused on what they actually can do versus trying to hold lofty worldviews that requires 100% cooperation from strangers. It's okay the theorycraft but at some point you have to look at the present.
