      Have you heard or seen anything about the Atlas video game, it is a pirate themed survival game in open seas, you can build ships and draw whatever you want in sails and flags, you have to search for different types of food to balance the vitamins, you can tame animals, it has some fictional creatures, and of course you can steal ships from other players but that takes a long time so is better to sink them unless youre on a roleplay server or something, or you can add mods to fight human npcs and have more ship types
      I haven't played it in a while but in my opinion it's better to play it in pvp enabled multiplayer with a lot of people, who at least don't attack when you're offline, and without bad losers, cuz they can throw the loot and defend it until it despawns its really annoying

    One thing to point out regarding the muskets used by the Jackdaw crew is that they were equipped with bayonets, which is highly unlikely to be used by pirates during the Golden Age. I'm guessing the developers probably reused the same musket models from AC3.

    I disagree with Woodes Rogers being depicted as a “villain”. Yes, they were antagonists, but by AC III, they [mostly] return to showing that Templars aren’t all too different from Assassins, save for their means; how they achieve the goal of peace. The Ezio trilogy mostly made it about super heroes vs super villains, and while there are some Templars from each game that are certainly mustache twirlers, many are depicted as still being honorable in their own right. Rogers was depicted as far more patient, understanding, and considerate than others. He goes out of his way to spare the pirates and grant them new purpose, as opposed to hunting them down despite their crimes granting him a right to do so. While he may have been apart of a plot to erase privacy and snoop on the world, the reasoning he and the Templars of the West Indies were understandable from a certain point of view. He also doesn’t really hunt down Edward, funnily enough, perhaps hoping that turning the other captains would cause a domino effect. Woodes, and even the other Templars are more so antagonists than absolute villains. I’d say Black Bart (the Sage) and Laurens Prins are the most villainy main antagonists. The game merely depicts Woodes Rogers as an obstacle for Edward, and a catalyst that aids the shifting tides of the Pirate’s Life. They were already hitting a dead end. He just eased that end by providing new opportunities and potential salvation for the pirates. He never kills anyone in the game. Not that we see nor hear of. If we do hear of it, it’s old news. On the other hand, Edward kills people left and right for monetary gain, and eventually in defense of freedom and privacy.
    Just because a character is depicted as an antagonist to the protagonist, doesn’t mean they are the villain. Just read or watch Death Note to learn that. I can’t speak for Black Sails, however, since I haven’t watched it because it seemed like a Vikings (the show) style reimagining of history with myths and legends and historically inaccurate costume design.

    Your mention of pirates using black and native people for diving wrecks makes me wonder if they singled out people from specific coastal groups for this. Someone who grew up spear fishing or pearl diving would be invaluable for diving a wreck of any depth over 50 feet or so, and some could even go below 100 feet and still be able to function. Those are skills and physical attributes that would take a lifetime to acquire. Ordering inexperienced divers to those depths is probably just going to drown them, if they even make it down that far at all before giving up, and that's not even considering the danger inherent to swimming inside a wreck.

    16:30 both naval action and The Pirate Caribbean Hunt/Plague of the dead have a degree of flag customisation, at least you can select which you want to fly.
    In regards to your ships section.
    I've looked a bit some naval vessels of 17th to 19th century and a recurring issue is that the hulls seems to be closer to ships from the Napoleonic era or later. The Man of War is obviously a modified version of Napoleonic era 1st rates but so do the brigs. If you take out the ram and extent the bowsprit it bears a striking resemblance to some 1800s french brigs. The most recent design seems that of the schooner as it's near identical to a 1850s american one called The Californian. The frigate, gunboat and fishing vessels do seem like the closest to period ships but even then they are a bit modern.
    The Jackdaw doesn't seem to have a direct inspiration. You could say she's an enlarged Lady Washington. The Russian mercury is also possible as it's particularly large brig even if it's from 1850s as well. Interestingly though, there's two ships that seem to be the main inspirations. The rigging is closest to a Bomb Vessel called the Granado, which is somewhat appropriate given you can mount mortars on it, and the hull is a larger version of a replica of supposed Spanish frigate called the Rattlesnake.

    ~5:00 The dialogue can be quite historically inaccurate as well, the last few times I went through the game I made note every time I heard something that sounded out of place, and sure enough, many of these examples were only attested late in the 19th century. A few memorable examples were Charles Vane saying "I'll cap you," to mean "I'll shoot you," which is a reference to 19th century percussion cap firearms (the first thing that caught my attention and got me questioning other lines), Edward talking about getting in "a dustup," which is a late-19th century euphemism for a fight ("to kick up a/the dust" is attested in the 1750s, and "to dust (someone's) coat" in the 1660s, but "dustup" specifically was first attested in the 1890s), and Adewale referencing "plum duff" (a term for Christmas Pudding first attested in the 1840). These are just some examples that I both noticed and remembered, I'm sure there are many similar uses of British slang throughout the game that are more recent than the setting.
    Aside from the writing but still on the subject of spoken dialogue, I'd also like to note that many if not most of the accents are anachronistic too; during the early 18th century, non-rhotic accents hadn't developed in Great Britain (such accents seem to have started to develop right at the end of the 18th century, and gradually become the norm in England through the 19th), so many of the characters should speak with hard or rolled R's on the ends of words instead (hard R's for most English accents, R's for some though not necessarily all Welsh accents ad possibly Northern English accents like the one they presented Mary Read with. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of records of African and Afro-Caribbean accents from the time, so it's difficult to know whether dropping R's in modern anglophone Caribbean accents is a feature of African influence or later non-Rhotic British accents, but since that's unknown I can accept accents like Adewale's as plausible). Of course, using more accurate reconstructed accents would rob Edward of Matt Ryan's lovely natural accent, so... tradeoffs. I'd be willing to bet there are some anachronisms in the French and Spanish accents and dialogue we hear too (as there are with languages in every AC game), but I don't know very much about either of those languages' historical development, so I couldn't say.

    • @GoldandGunpowder
      @GoldandGunpowder  Před 4 měsíci +7

      I don't really point out accents in historical fiction mostly because it's hard to teach voice actors to speak in 300 y.o accents, and in many cases it might sound like a complete LARP. Like in Barry Lyndon where the main actor doesn't even bother not sounding like an American. I know there are a few series which nail it but if they don't bother I don't blame them.

      @@GoldandGunpowder I can't blame them for not doing it (although I would like more things to try lol, and if the Assassin's Creed series can get a full cast to speak in Italian accents I think they could do the same with period accents), but it's still worth mentioning in a list of historical inaccuracies imo, at least if there isn't any conceit of translation for the modern audience.

      @SomasAcademy Před 4 měsíci +2

      Vane sounds great, but his accent... really implausible. Non-rhotic (R-dropping) British accents may have started to develop by the end of the 18th century, but at the time of AC4 they definitely hadn't, so most of the British characters in game should be saying hard R's like in General American, Irish, or West Country accents.

    Sorry, I know I'm late to the party, but there's one point on naval ramming that I just find hilarious: the Austrian navy actually tried reintroducing it into doctrine in the mid 19th century after the Battle of Lissa, which was such a... series of events, including several collisions (Admiral Tegethoff is quoted with "ram everything that's grey!"), it basically tricked their admiralty into believing that ironclad warships should be feasibly usable as rams. There were wooden ships at the battle, some even experienced collisions- and promptly showed the world why nobody really conducted large scale ramming for centuries.
    That idea kind of made it into popular fiction even, with HG Wells writing the HMS Thunderchild as a "Torpedo Ram".

    I think for a better naval combat system you'd have to separately track crew casualties and damage (largely functional rather than structural) on enemy ships. It's kind of a prerequisite for having baoth cannon and muskets serving their own purpose before the boarding phase. (though there should ofc be stuff like cannister breaking it up a bit) On the boarding phase a loose command system could be kind a cool. Maybe something that a allows you to have the crew kinda following Edward (alternatively the AI controlled SIC) so you can direct them a bit.

That said, it's still a great game, the inaccuracies just make it slightly less good than it could have been. Additionally, maybe the reason why the pirates are seen as ‘good’ is because they’re the POV we’re seeing the most of, so of course Rogers is seen as a villain.
    Had the perspective been reversed then it would be the other way around.
    Plus, in the game the pirates aren’t really portrayed as saints, far from it actually, but they’re at least seen as aphable and sympathetic to a degree to make them compelling protagonists.
    As a guy who loves all things pirates, I know these guys were bad news. But that doesn’t stop me from liking stories about them.
    Honestly, your disregard for how the story is told POV wise makes this video even more difficult to take seriously.

      and the way they're portrayed is completely ahistorical. if the Nassau pirates were portrayed historically you would not feel sympathy for them, and if Rogers in turn was portrayed historically, you'd feel sympathy for him. so they had to twist the history to hit the story they wanted to tell

      @@GoldandGunpowder Oh for god’s sake, this is what I can’t stand about historians.
      For you guys everything has to be 100% accurate or it’s considered ahistorical and bad.
      That term barely makes any sense too, history is full of conjecture and guesswork just in general.
      And to add to that point-saying something is accurate or inaccurate is making an assumption about something that we only know bits and pieces of in some cases or a lot of others-particularly because of source bias screwing things in certain directions.

    • @Kaijugan
      @Kaijugan Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@GoldandGunpowder It’s just generally annoying. The fact that historians have to um actually every single thing in existence and just can’t let people try to make historically authentic works without having to rigidly adhere to full accuracy and restrict themselves creatively.
      That’s what ticks me off. Not the analysis itself.
      Actually, I found some of the stuff in the video rather interesting.
      But the way it was presented just pushed my buttons.
      And to my point about historical authenticity rather than accuracy, Blue from OSP put it best in his Detail Diatribe on the Historical elements of AC: Historical Accuracy can be tweaked in games like this, so long as it still provides a general sense of historical authenticity that doesn’t completely break the immersion.
      I’m not explaining it well as him so I suggest seeing said video, but hopefully you get my point

    • @GoldandGunpowder
      @GoldandGunpowder  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The scope of the video was clearly clarified from the start: people ask me how historical this game is, I answer. People ask me about AC4 in several comment sections, in my email, on the Discord, on my livestreams. It was a video in high demand. Historical accuracy or inaccuracy does not mean a game is bad or good, I remain neutral on this point. The people who are "generally annoying" are YOUR sort who barge into these discussions, get angry when anything you perceive as negative is said about your favorite video game, without comprehending a very basic message or simply being able to enjoy something in spite of its flaws.

    Pretty good, but I wished you talked about the army/navy uniforms of the British, Spanish, and Portuguese. They never seemed accurate to me, and I’m wondering what they would have looked like instead. Haven’t found much on the subject.
    Also found it odd whenever you raid a ship, your only fighting the soldiers (no sailors or anything)

      From what I can identify, the accuracy of the outfits are somewhat of a mixed bag.They have many elements of uniforms from the period but appear to be largely anachronistic.Some of the enemies are seen wearing bicorn hats (the type worn by Napoleon).These hats came into fashion in the 1790's which is around 60 years after the golden age.

    Really weird question and request but when skull and bones comes out in full release will you look at all the ships and tell us what you think about their design their a little cartoonish but over all I think their pretty nice also I don’t care what people think I’ve had fun with the beta and I like the way their road map looks and anything with ship combat and sense of progression I’m down for
    Cough cough somebody send me to rehab for war thunder
    Note the reason I’m asking this is because I noticed there are ships like the snow and some other ships named from real life but I don’t know how accurate they are and I’d like to know even though I really don’t care it is a game after all made by Ubisoft so their gonna take creative liberties where ever they want

    • @CosplayZine
      @CosplayZine Před 4 měsíci

      They'll not only take liberties. They'll disregard potential customers by doing things like removing all comments from their trailers. They don't care about actual pirate lore and they'll run it into the ground with automatic weapons and nonsense until it breaks and dies out in no time. Another cannon simulator. That's all people want to make these days. Real pirates didn't even want to fire their cannon at the prize. They weren't much unlike the outlaws of the west or bank robbers of today in those regards.

    This became an insanely long comment but: What really strikes me when comparing the world building of AC4 BF to Witcher 3 for example, is that despite the latter game taking place in a fantasy world it feels more historical, like medieval North/East Europe with added fantasy elements and some later technology (smoking pipes, American plants like sunflowers etc.). Even the costumes in Witcher 3 look like real Medieval or Renaissance costumes most of the time, Witcher gear excluded in some cases (and even it makes more sense most of the time more than AC4 leather pirate armor). Even the fantasy elements are better included, both have these as precursor technology and Templar vs Assassins setups are nothing if not fantasy in the AC universe. Of course Witcher 3 is based on a book series that did most of the world building but still. AC 4 has some nice historical touches here and there and I do like it as a game, I just do not like the visuals like the horrible ramming brigs or ridiculous clothes. Also, Red Dead Redemption 2 did so much better work in setting up a historical fictional universe too, despite some liberties like leather cowboy hat (leather hats seem to be so an obsession in media ever since Potc) and use of fictional states (which is a decent creative decision in my opinion). BTW the most striking historical errors in the cities are later built structures like Havana's grand cathedral built between 1748-1777 and Nassau's The Queen's Staircase built in 1790s. These are forgivable in my opinion as these games also work as cheap ways to "travel" to other places and it is nice to have some local landmarks features that are still there and both of these do date to the same century at least. I wish they had done more realistic geography in the game too and more diverse nature as there would be in the Caribbean. Great Inagua base is utterly ridiculous with its giant Mayan ruins (I like their inclusion, but there could have been just more of then in the Yucatan area to be explored) and mountains whereas the real island in Inagua is very flat. The idea of your own pirate town was cool though. Anyway nice video. Cheers!

    Woodes Rogers portrayed as a villain doesn't send any kind of "message". AC4's portrayal of pirates is more a fantasy and less historical, so having a figure like Rogers as an antagonist only serves that purpose. There isn't any kind of message telling people that anything the Nassau pirates did was actually good because those are not the type of pirates depicted in the game. Don't be so quick to make a sweeping moral judgement.

    • @GoldandGunpowder
      @GoldandGunpowder  Před 4 měsíci +2

      By this logic you can make a historical "fantasy" game where Pol Pot is a superhero who fights against evil people with glasses. Most people are unaware of Pol Pot and since this will be their only exposure to him they will gain a positive perception of him, which judging by his historical deeds, is entirely unjust. But let's say you make a similar game on Hitler. People know his story well enough to recognize this game as complete bullshit. It is not the case for Pol Pot, Woodes Rogers or the Nassau Flying Gang. AC4 and Black Sails are essentially slanderous hit pieces on a man who died 300 years ago. You might say that it happened so long ago that it doesn't matter, but people still celebrate Kings, scientists and authors from the same period as national heroes. Individuals and their deeds are posthumously celebrated or villified. It should be presented frankly for everyone to make their own opinions. And these works have twisted people's opinions. Throughout the years since this game's release I've encountered people whose opinions on historical pirates are completely twisted by works like these. So yes, I am going to be very quick at making sweeping moral judgements because I know what I am talking about.

    Any story where Pirates are romantic Swashbuckling heroes is going to have to have to villainize Woods Rogers for the exact same reason Pirates get romanticized.
    Makes for a good story; but in all seriousness I have become wary of stories that romanticize historical pirates. Because while that romantic image makes for a fun story; it also has done great harm to the general Public’s understanding of a critical period of Colonial History and the relationship between Colonialism and Piracy.
    And while I don’t think it matters if people think pirates wore tricorn hats and sang shanties from 1800s. I do think it matters that people think Pirates were revolutionary proto-anarchists when they were in fact the vanguard of European Colonialism.
