  • Today we took the ol XJ project up too a local trail to give it a spin and see what she could do. Was a ton of fun and surprisingly didn't break anything with the exception of a bent bumper!

    one thing that helps with manuals off road is to have a hand throttle! I have the TeraFlex hand throttle kit on my jeep and its great, you just set it to hold the throttle where you want and worry about clutch and brakes

    With the original set of wheels that your Jeep came with, you could mount Winter Tires on those, for the icy spots. Save the pure off-road All-Terrain tires for the spring/summer/fall ? But don't tell Hayden or any of the Jeep crew, let them figure it out, after you make it up icy hills when they can't ;)

    • @SarahSmith-hd8kd
      @SarahSmith-hd8kd Před 4 lety +2

      Welding the rear diff sucks personally it's for a wheeling only rig cause it urps and chirps on every tight turn you take but not sure if his is a wheeling only rig. I would actually go for a 1995 -2001 ford 8.8" out of an explorer any up model explorer should have 31spline LSD and rear disc breaks on most those years and order the ruff stuff 8.8" XJ axle kit that pull apart and ruff stuff the whole gig ran me like 320$ if I recall this is an AMAZING setup and the LSD is beast not to mention rear disc breaks. Mountain offroad enterprises has e-brake cables for this conversion too if you desire that most states require that for DOT regs.

    • @Tanner731
      @Tanner731 Před 4 lety

      @@SarahSmith-hd8kd this is the boosted bois fam we are talking about. LSD is as good as open diff when you start lifting wheels and a lunchbox locker for a $500 fun trail rig is silly

    • @SarahSmith-hd8kd
      @SarahSmith-hd8kd Před 4 lety

      @@Tanner731 I just figured he spent that money lifting it even if he did his own junkyard parts bastard pack Dakota pack etc lift hatever you know. I've done everything to an XJ you could do almost I've had and built 8 of them now I mean he is got to be already with lift wheels tires and the bumper all that he's already in it 1,800$ I'll bet and that's not including the suggestion of adding a lunchbox locker I just figured why not another 300-320$ all in roughly and have a far superior axle over the assumed equiped 8.25" I have only watched this one video and going off what I'm reading in comments so not sure and if it isn't an 8.25" and it's the dana 35 cause I highly doubt it has a rear 44 so if it does have the much weaker 35 then I figured the welding of the diff is just a waste of time and effort even an 8.25" has broken two separate ones that I welded the rears on and yes they were both welded right by a 25 year welding friend by trade of mine, and for marginal amount more money he would be SO much happier. I'm only speaking and suggesting from personal experience like I said I've done almost every kind of upgrade and build from mild to wild 3" to 4" to 5" 5.5" 6.5" 7" short arm long arm drop brackets pretty much every build and he would like it. Even if he planned a cheap trail rig he is already at least 1,800$ in it rather he admits it or states it or not and the 8.8" 31spline rear disc break 8.8" is a monster even with lift and huge tires I only say that cause I've got one under my 8.5" lifted 98 with 37" tires and it takes every trail like a champ and has never failed yet and I plan to go to 40" tires like a couple of my friend's have on their same setup and they have never snapped an axle yet that's saying alot but I will upgrade to chrome mollyshafts fir that as mine are standard now. So I don't think it's to silly when he's already got almost 2k in it and you make a lunchbox locker suggestion which I agree with as to keep it fairly cheap in theme I think he'd be very happy.
      Edit: I forgot the winch he has so if he bought that with the quick disconnect for this rig and didn't own it already he's more like 2,200$ ish at least probably this is including buying xj for 500 if that was the price.

      @@SarahSmith-hd8kd im not even going to click read more. chill sarah im not trying to read a youtube comment novel about 8.8 vs 8.25. if you eliminate c clips and put spacers on it weld new brackets on the 8.8 is nice. that all costs more than putting a front lunchbox in +welding rear

    backing down that icy hill with the brakes locked is really dangerous I had a similar experience but on very loose shale a more experienced driver tell me to put it in Reverse (low range) and let the engine do the braking , I can't tell if it would make much more sense on ice or not but I think you'd have more control if the wheels are turning than skidding

    are you running low range, it doesn't sound like it. you can get 3.55 gears out of a auto jeep and it would help a lot. junk yard gears are cheap and already set up, so they can just be dropped in in most cases, or you can do an axle swap with axles out of a jeep grand Cherokee WJ you would get bigger brakes high steer and 4.10 gears and LSD in some just have to check dana30 front 44 rear, and they are pretty cheap at the junk yard if it is a you pull it place
