  • Taking on your first husbands name...
Here's a woman called Patricia Dohey from St. Bride's, Newfoundland that I recorded in May 2019 talking to me about how she took on her husbands first name when she moved to St. Brides. This was once very common around Ireland where there would be the same first and last name ie Mary Doyle, Biddy Ryan etc etc so the women would take on their husbands name to distinguish them. ie Tom's Mary, Pat's Biddy etc etc. This is still really common with the Travelling community but it also survived in these rural Irish communities in Newfoundland. When Patricia moved to St. Brides there was already a Patricia Dohey so she took on her husband's name and she's now 'George's Patricia'.
Have a listen to herself explain and listen to the accent too.
