It occurs to me that Wayne Gretzky was 6-years old when this happened. He grew up, had a 20-year career in the NHL, and has now been retired for 23 years...and the Leafs _still_ haven't been back to the Stanley Cup finals.

I remember watching this game with my father, May 1967. I always wondered why Allan Stanley took this face-off against Jean Beliveau. What's amazing to me is that even though I can't remember what I did 5 minutes ago, I can still identify every member of this Leaf team just by their number. Another member of this team gone. Number 26, Allan Stanley passed away this past weekend. This game was made even more exciting with Bill Hewitt's play-by-play. Thanks for posting this!

You'll never see it again." That must be how a Maple Leafs fan feels. 44 years no cup, and they're no closer now than they've ever been. What's really amazing is not only haven't they won a cup, they haven't made a final. Also, we see Bettman isn't the first pres/commish to get booed handing out the cup.

Toronto had great players in the 1960's. A great group: Kelly, Pulford, Keon, Bower, Hillman, Horton, Stanley, Baun, Mahovlich, Shack etc. But anyone who watched them knew that the catalyst was their captain. A man of native Canadian descent who played with class, quality and principles. Here is to the great George Armstrong. Terrific statement on his career as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1960's.

I was fortunate enough to see the semi final game 5 in the Chicago Stadium which I consider to be one of the greatest and most exciting games ever played. Sawchuk replaced Bower after the first period and played like a trojan warrior. He made something like 39 saves over two periods and survived one of the most wicked blasts off a Bobby Hull slap shot that caught him flush on the shoulder and dropped him like an anchor. I still maintain Sawchuk was the greatest goalie to ever play.....

Pittsburgh won with the Highest GF #1, and 17th GA. Leafs after 10Games are 1st in the Eastern Conference, and Tied with 2 other teams for 1st Over-all. Matthews has 10goals in 10games, leads the League in Points. Oh, and Reilly is leading the League in points in D-man with 12pts in 10games. Leafs are on pace for over 300goals and the Power-Play is Terrifying. Was clicking at 50% for the first 8games, Despite the Fact the Leafs are currently leading the League in Wins, points, road wins [5-0] and goals. The Leafs still are waiting for Nylander to return to the line-up. And Kardi just scored his 1st of the Season. Leafs have never been in a better position to win the Cup. PS_ Leafs hold Vegas best odds for winning the Cup this year. 10-1 and the Leafs just handed Winnipeg their first lose at home this season, had Winnipeg Won tonight they would have been 1st over-all. The Leafs played their best road game so far and remain a perfect 5-0.

[The Leafs actually had won more NHL championships than the Habs at that time because Montreal's first Cup came prior to the formation of the NHL.]

Dino I love your optimism and enthusiasm but this year is not in the cards. Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Anderson are bona-fide future superstars. Matthews looks to me ( and I'm 61, played and coached hockey my whole life) to be as good as, and maybe even better than Mario Lemieux. He has all the tools and incredible puck sense. He always makes the right play, has the puck on a string and a scorer's touch around the net. They'll make him 'Captain' next year and soon he'll be leading this team to a return to championships. The Leafs will cover themselves and the team in glory and bring home many Stanley Cups. I predict the first of at least a half dozen for this group, a surefire dynasty- to-be, to be won in in 2018-2019. Reilly and Gardiner anchor a solid D-Corps, but we need a rock-solid, bone-jarring, tough-as-nails Scott Stevens type D-Man patrolling the neutral zone and delivering tactical-nuke style bodychecks on the opposition. When they are constantly watching out for a hitting defenceman the rest of their game suffers. Their passes are not as accurate or timely, they shoot way too soon, and their timing at the blue line goes wonky, creating offsides and eliminating many potential scoring rushes.
I bet Shanny, Lou and Hunter are on the lookout for a Bieksa type right now, only a much younger version. This Toronto squad is *the* team of the future.

A lot of American TV series and live sports telecasts were shown in colour back in 1967, but this CBC live sports telecast was in black-and-white. Maybe CTV was showing more TV shows in colour than CBC back in Canada's centennial year, eh!

@longwanghung You mean the last, greatest moment in Leafs' history. The Leafs winning the Cup in 1967 forced hockey into my consciousness, and I was treated to another ten (10) Hab's Stanley Cup celebrations in my lifetime. Sorry I missed the other 14 (fourteen). Even those exceed the Leafs' total of 11 (eleven). To be fair, Montreal hasn't won a Cup since 1993, and neither has Toronto, but one requires a very good memory to remember Toronto's last.
