Kenneth Anger made up alot of that book the murder weapon was not a dildo. They just beat him to death. Anger really stretched the truth with that book.

AND they only served less than 10 years in prison of their LIFE sentences. So even back then our justice system was a joke. Well eventually they got what was coming to them. in the early fifties, Ramon Novarro was in the knights of columbus with my
dad. (i have a group picture) RN held me as a baby! much later i was at Manresa retreat house in the san gabriel mountains and i happened to walk into the church, where there was a beautiful altar, on the side plaque was ''donated by Ramon Novarro''. dad worked at glen glenn studios at the time in the editing department.

One of the funniest things ever said by a human being: Billy Haines (who'd been close with Navarro early on) was asked by a fan magazine if he knew him- he replied "We sing in the same choir."
This story makes me so sad for Ramon and so angry at the trash killers and trash writer K. Anger. Thank you for helping set Ramon's history back to truth.
I grew up on classic Hollywood so I was so happy to have found Hollywood Babylon in a thrift store as a kid after having heard so much about it from 'Mysteries and Scandals,' that show hosted by AJ Benza.
WOW. The amount of trash I had to unlearn from Hollywood Babylon is insane. K. Anger should be ashamed of himself. The photo of Lewis Stone still haunts me to this day.
Come to think of it, Scott would be a GREAT choice for the host of an updated 'Mysteries and Scandals!'

I remember thinking for so many years that Jayne Mansfield was decapitated.
Novarro did an episode of The Wild Wild West the year before he died, so he did dip his toe into the campy television genre. He was a true star and gentleman, may his rest be peaceful.

@@DearlyDepartedTours I'm pretty sure that he also started the Urban Legend about Fatty Arbuckle and the champagne bottle...and Jayne Mansfield being beheaded in the crash. Both of those were pretty bad too, along with Ramon Navarro.

That book. That BOOK! I used to LOVE that book! Discovered it in the late 80's & practically memorized it! I was in my late teens, and my Mom (who loved 'old' Hollywood) & I would read in astonishment, questioning what could be true or not! That book made made me realize that Hollywood held many, many secrets!
Ironically, I didn't find out that most of it, (or all - take your pick) wasn't true until the internet! 🤣

The book on Miriam Hopkins by Allen Ellenburger is an excellent Biography of this Star who had quite a long career from the Movies, to Stage, to Radio and Television.
In addition it should be noted that Miriam Hopkins was a favorite Actress of Director Ernst Lubitsch.
She was also nominated a Best Actress Academy Award for her starring role in the first Three-Strip Technicolor film, 1935's "Becky Sharp".

Some people had million dollar voices and some had both the looks and the voice. For those with both it was the Silver Screen.
Radio Actors were some of the best in the business and their talent was especially appreciated during the "Golden Age of Radio".
He would have never been paired with Garbo in "Mata Hara" if he didn't have the looks!

Great video Scott! One thing however..it may be worth getting a microphone for your guests on these outdoor interviews. It can be a little difficult to understand and/or hear them at times. Stellar video otherwise, very interesting information. Oddly enough I heard the dildo story from an episode of the sopranos where a minor character recounts it to 2 others.
I thought it was me. I also had a difficult time understanding your guest. I missed most of what he was saying.

Ramon was such a good looking man. I've never seen any of his movies but my impression of him was that he was a "poor mans" Valentino along with Gilbert Roland. Such a sad story. I wouldn't say that any of those 3 gentlemen was a "poor man's" someone else. Each of them had a unique look. Valentino had a more sensuous look so that he could play smoldering parts, like the sheik. However, he was the most limited in his range of characters. I think his best part was in "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse ". That was his best tango. It's too bad he died so young but perhaps he was truly a meteor.
Ramon was able to play upscale men through the ages - like Ben Hur in Jesus's time as well as a 1920's well-dressed man about town. I am not sure if I can name a lead acting part past 1935 or so that he would have been perfect for. But I don't think Ramon necessarily was unhappy. He moved on to make a very good living buying and selling real estate.
And, for me, the best looking, most versatile actor was Gilbert Roland. He possessed a self-assured masculinity that never came off as overbearing or derogatory of women.
Bette Davis told an excellent story (I think it was to Carson) about her first encounter with Gilbert. She said that she moved to Hollywood to be in the movies. Upon arrival she went through the rounds of go-sees and ended up in the office of the big guy at a top notch movie studio. He told her that he believed she had a chance in the movies but he wanted to see if she could handle love scenes. Bette started to panic because she had no experience with men. The movie mogul had selected 5 young men hopefuls for the screen test. Bette sat on the couch and one by one they did a kissing scene with her. She said they seemed to be pretty clumsy and as inexperienced as she. Number 5 walked in and he was introduced as Gilbert Roland. He sat right down next to her. Then the director called "Action". Gilbert looked into her "Bette Davis eyes", telling her how thrilled he was to be alone with her. He lightly kissed her on the cheek and then the lips. Then, well, she told Johnny that the earth moved, the bells rang, and that Gilbert REALLY knew what he was doing.

He really should have been called to the carpet for all of the false stories on these Hollywood Greats that could not defend themselves. Also, since "rediscovering" The Great Lover himself, Rudolph Valentino, I've learned so much about the silent era of Hollywood and The Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I've also heard of the work by Allen Ellenberger! It was great to hear about his book about Novarro as well. Very fascinating channel! Thanks again!

Kenneth Anger is a known liar. Why he would do that, I have no idea. He wrote horrible things about Lupe Velez and said Marie Prevost’s corpse was eaten by her dachshund. He also had connections to Bobby Beausoliel, he made a film called Lucifer Rising. A strange individual indeed.
This was another really interesting story. I didn't become aware of Ramon Novarro until just a couple of years ago when I read about how he died. Thanks for taking us to the neighborhood and showing the house in this video. i was kind of surprised the house is still there. Great job Scott.

I can honestly say that I have never heard of this gentleman before . Thank you Scott for bringing his past life to the present . As for the guy who wrote “ Hollywood Babylon “, what a hack he is ! The equivalent of the gossip rags out there , either in print or online . But this has gone on for centuries actually . After all , sensationalism sells publications . I’ll even bring in Shakespeare to this . As far as I’ve been able to trace my far flung ancestor back, King MacBeth , well it’s not accurate what Shakespeare wrote .

I'm really glad you posted this because I read Hollywood Babylon years ago purely because I was a fan of Anger (his movies, not his gossip). Novarros section stood out to me for obvious reasons, and I couldn't find any other source to support the claims in the book and always wondered was it indeed slander or one of those deep deep rabbit holes I needed to go down. I'm glad to see it clearned up. Still love Angers movies, but always felt he was a BS artist, and this solidifies it.

I live in MPK so close to Calvary cemetery and lots of famous persons were buried in this cemetery - Lou Costello, Ted Healy to name a few. Adjacent to Calvary is Home of Peace Memorial Park where you’ll find the graves of Louis B. Mayer, Shemp Howard and Curly Howard(3 stooges).

Thank you, and your guest, for going in depth on his passing. It did bring tears to my eyes; how caring he was, and also how the laws and his upbringing at his time was unjust. Although i understand that it is difficult to go against one's upbringing. I just hope he had moments of happiness and freedom.
I also have to admit that Hollywood Babylon is an interesting read...like gossip on crack.

I'd say Ramon Navarro was a big star in the silents. He was a smart businessman and knew Hollywood stardom doesn't last forever. I think why Valentino is iconic is because he died before Talkies. Navarro carried on.

There is a great article with a lot of details about the equally disturbing background of the two brothers and the chain of events leading to the murder.
One of the brothers had only been in LA for 9 days. It’s on the Out magazine website, called The Hustlers and the Movie Star, by William Van Meter. 2012. Says there also that the original house was demolished (?).
PS. It helps to put on the CC/captions to hear/read the conversation at the gravesite.

Scott did a 'tour' of his bookcase several years ago and it gave me a lot of interesting titles to my reading list. I'd love for him to do another vlog like that. You can see all those books on the shelves behind him on some of his blogs but I can't quite make out the titles!!
