Not to be like "umm ackshually" but the amount of time that people have lived in a patriarchy is a tiny fraction of human history. Our pre-agriculture hunter-gatherer ancestors likely lived in smaller bands that were "fiercely egalitarian" (as anthropologist Richard Lee put it), and there's a good chance that random violence against anyone, including women, would not have been tolerated. That said... violence against women has certainly been ubiquitous in recorded history, and I agree that "punch gate" is not some kind of freak phenomenon in our society.

@@owl.feathersancient Greece, for instance was also extremely matriarchal. Ancient Rome too. This *is* somewhat recent and only reinforced by the Industrial Revolution and standardisation of the work week that ultimately made women stay at home and raise kids while the men went off to their 9-5’s. And to OP, yes, these random attacks on random transeunte women, in a short span of time, in the same manner, in the same area, are correlated, whether you assume men have been violent towards women since the beginning of time or not.

@@anacatarina178 ancient greece wasn't matriarchal at all I dont know where you get your information but in classical athens women were married at 13 14 they would stay the whole day in the house in gynaikoniti away from men, they couldn't vote, they wouldn't go at school, they wouldn't attend the olympics, they couldn't even go outside almost never and this was the norm for most of greece during the whole timeline of antiquity. Spartan women and later roman women had better standing in society and more rights but still they would definetely be considered beneath men. Patriarchy sucks but it is not new at all only the gatheters were matriarchal .

The wild thing is that most head injuries cause damage to the brain, it's just that our equipment isn't sensitive enough to pick it up. We had a lecture on it and it's one that has stuck with me (paramedic science). A whack like that in which you fall to the ground is likely to cause, at least, a mild concussion. Obviously the initial concerns of a bleed etc. can be ruled out, but the damage we don't see can persist even years later. It's under-researched because the equipment isn't sensitive enough, but also because people are unlikely to attribute symptoms years later to that time they bumped heads playing rugby 3 years ago. Mild injuries can literally disrupt brain networks; imagine your brain is soft and smooshy but encased in a very hard box which doesn't move. So when you're punched in the head, you have the intial force affecting that area, but you also have the potential (depending on the force with which you're hit) for your the brain to move and hit the skull at the back, causing an injury there. With enough force, the brain can then rebound from hitting the back of the skull, re-injuring that front bit again. It's no joke which is why lads on a night out end up dead after a 'punch up'. I'm all about banter and pranks and have a vile sense of humour. This isn't a joke.

It's not as extreme as getting punched in the face (which arguably makes it more calculated and tricky to legally pursue), but it's common here in Japan for women to get body checked or shoved by men in the streets/train stations. I have been deliberately bumped into by guys who could have moved out of the way many times in recent months. It happens so fast that you either can't do anything or you end up instictively apologizing because you think it might've been your fault. Thanks for posting this. I know a lot of people here aren't from the united states, so aren't really worrying about this, but this EXACT thing happened to be on the tube in London a few months ago. Like a random man just socked me in the face while I was checking my phone. Please stay safe girls!

About a year ago my cousin who lives in New York, had gotten punched in the face, she was looking at her phone.
    WTH.
She didn't get a look of the man. It did happen in Manhattan.

I don’t live in nyc, but in my small town I was grocery shopping. In a narrow aisle and a grown buff old man slammed into my shoulder as hard as he could.keep in mind narrow aisle for sure but he had enough room to walk past me . All because I didn’t make a show out of walking in a aisle and didn’t jump out of the way he assaulted me.

in my country we had this same thing happen a few years ago, some guy was roaming the streets punching random women from behind then running away. he eventually got caught but this is just like, a thing that men do. it happens all the time.

Speaking as a woman living in NYC, this sort-of crime has been going on in the city for awhile. They called it the knockout game. It started with elderly people being punched in the face, than younger people started being punched as well. 😢
