This video was well made and super helpful. Thank you so much! I collect buttons and have thousands of them. I'm sure there must be at least a few bakelite buttons in there and now I know how to tell for certain. Thanks again!
Yes, me too...I've got lots of testing to do.😊
Best explanation...why is bakelite so valuable

This really helps thanks I wish they invented smellevison though because I'd love to smell the plastics I'm not so good at hearing smells. also can bakelite be a different color than brown or black and what is the difference between bakelite and lucide like is the different color bakelite just bakelite and lucide mixed I don't get it.
How hot should the water be. And how long should I leave it in
About to do hot water test on a possible bakelite necklace
Did you post link for that cream your using?
Thanks Margaret..,5 years later...I've got lots of old buttons to test. I just watched someone do a baking soda in water for testing Bakalite...not sure if it's a good a test as the chemical stuff.
I think I have bakelite bracelets. I did hot water test and after the color turned foggy. Which rubbed off. Does that fogginess happen with bakelite?
Does it have to be that brand of cream for testing Bakelite?
I’ve got a faux tortoise shell comb with rhinestones, and I’m trying to figure out what it is so I can safely clean it. My mom died in 2016, but even the hot water test is not helping me because her perfume really soaked into everything she owned!
How hot should the hot water be?
Ok either my water is gonna kill us or that is bakelite..whoooo
Still interested in cream though lol
i like how the amber looks like grapes
Do you have any idea what kind of plastic was used for simulated leather on cases, bags, purses, etc in the early 1900's? Do you have any suggestions on how to clean and maintain this kind of early simulated leather plastic?
Thanks!
No idea!
Actually I found out: www2.dupont.com/Phoenix_Heritage/en_US/1910_detail.html
Thanks for the response though!
Why are there thumbs down?? Must be some jealous people. Thank you so much for your knowledge, very helpful!
Many people don't like "bak a lite" instead of Bakelite or they don't consider this valid testing.
Probably mad that what they tested turned out to not be Bakelite
amber...1/4 cup salt..dissolved in 1 cup hot to warm water...amber will float...and when you rub it on clothes...put it on surface with little bits of paper etc. magnetic!
Thank you!
What does formaldehyde smell like?
LOL. Yeah I have the same question. Like a science lab.... Hey? I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. Science labs smell like all sorts of stuff.
how do you clean that cream off, does it damage the bakelite?
I just wipe with a damp cloth
Fragrance????
Does Bakelite glow like amber(greenish)
No
What about just plastic
I have a question.
I have a lot of necklaces from my grandmother do they are old but.... they look like bakelite but doesn't smell or test like bakelite. No smell at all but or looks like they have a lacquer layer that is pilling off. The beads without the layer I have tested also but same results.
What can it be? Safe to thow away or a gem?
I don't know
Take them to a jeweler that specializes in vintage jewelry.
How hot water? Like boiling or just warm?
SHe said "these ones" when she's holding two. Wouldn't that be "These twos"? And what is a one?
LOL
What is this?
