    Thanks for the help. I found an old family antique. A very heavy 4" by 6" tall Buddha with hand carved engravings and painting. It's mounted by pegs on a wooden base so I don't want to look at the bottom. But from what you say there is cross hatching on the belly (wonder if the carver did that on purpose), and on the back are parallel but not uniform yellowish lines streaking down as you said and it has a patina from being old, especially in the finely carved lines you can see the yellowing. There is not one pit or etched out line on the entire thing, it's the same form as it was 30 years ago plus the small yellowing. Even the ink used to draw symbols on the back of his cloke is all there with a couple edges fading. If i'm wrong please let me know anyone. The carving is extremely professional. And possibly over 30 years old.

    I definitely learned some great info here, thank you! Also, you can heat up a small pin and a bone piece will leave a burn mark, but ‘organic’ will not leave a mark.

    some one told me, that ivory and celluloid have diffeerent density, so feel different temperatures, when you touch them against your check, how true this is I do not know, but someone must know, there are experts out there, maybe they might let us know the truth.,.
    by the way, when I click on your relpys, nothing seems to appear, I wonder why ?

    Celluloid can be identified with a alcohol or vinegar dampened q-tip oxidization will turn yellow on the q-tip. Ivory should have about the same texture as your own teeth and bone is softer. I was raised in thrift stores and the ladies reminded me of leprechauns checking gold when they would bite into something they thought was ivory.

    Cleaning up some of my Grandpa's stuff he spent a lot of time over Seas during World War II. He collected a lot of things. I found a pair of chopsticks that I think might be Ivory or bone but it's really hard to tell. They're extremely smooth. And seemed to have some grain to them.

    Have you thought of using a device to show pieces in magnification rather than trying to hold them to camera? It would make your information so much more meaningful. You have so much to teach, but it's hard to watch the rapid, unsteady movements. Sorry! Just trying to be truthful

    • @kayw9274
      @kayw9274 Před 4 lety

      @@candyapple4836 I didn't see that as an exceptions on the US Fish and Wildlife Service website. There are narrow exceptions for instruments. Are you referring to the de minimis exemption?

    • @candyapple4836
      @candyapple4836 Před 4 lety

      I believe its under the marine mammal protection act. Less then 2 percent of Alaskan natives can work with what they call fresh ivory. walrus is used for food first and formost and then they use the tusks in the making of their jewelery and other crafts. they then can sell the craft to any one. if they want to sell the tusk it must be to a other coastal alaskan native. this is the way many support themselves within the Alaskan coastal villiages. It is highly regulated and highly watched.
