    Thank you! I have been debating of cash back vs travel. For me, I go the Travel card route. Even though I only travel a few times a year, it's worth it. Also for those wedding, birthday, and funerals; Travel cards are far better than cash back. I use Amex as primary but thinking of going over to chase. Give them a try.

    Really good points Sebby. I only have one travel card, the CSR, and aside from the sign up bonus I do feel like I got value out of it in year 1. I'll have to see what I'm doing travel wise because if I don't take a trip in year 2 it will no longer be a good deal. Cash back cards are more flexible with what you can do with your rewards. For instance, I can get a new HDTV or computer with that money. I do agree that you get more outsized value with travel cards. But you need to keep traveling to make them worth your while. I think it's also fair to say the biggest benefits from travel cards are the sign up bonuses. After that it's a question of what the multipliers are and if you would continue to use that card or not for daily spend.

    • @jonathanjones7681
      @jonathanjones7681 Před 5 lety +1

      The good thing about the CSR is that you dont have to really travel to use the yearly credit. Rent a car book a hotel for family it all counts. It's a good everyday card not great but good enough. In the end it's only $150 a year if you use the $300 credit.

    On the other side of the calculation, I do feel like a lot of people hold on to Platinums, Saphire Reserve, etc when the uber card would get more value in year 2. I didn't write it down but I think i remember that I would have to fly atleast once a month for those $400+AF cards to start to make sense. I feel it would be best to cycle through whichever premium card offers the best bonus that year. Personally given my spending and travel habbits, I maintain that 5 drawer cards with $100-$200 cash bonus is better value than 1 premium card with 50000-100000 points bonus bonus. I also recognize that not everyone has a robust enough credit profile to withstand that many new accounts and that one premium card may be a better bet.

    Travel is good if you have upcoming travel you would have done if you were planning to pay in cash anyway.
    Cash back credit cards are good for everything else because money is fungible, and points or airline miles are not. I can also earn interest on my money unlike miles or points.
    I use cash back credit cards at all times except if I plan to travel soon.
    In other words, I churn travel credit cards, but keep cash back cards for the long term.

    I really wish that somebody would calculate all of these rewards cards miles cards etc. is it even worth going through all of this when you have to pay interest on all of your purchases that’s basically what gets me I just can’t seem to get past that aspect because it seems like for the amount of rewards that I receive I’m paying almost to that or maybe a little more in interest payments per month on everything I buy

    For me, it's travel. Cash back is definitely nice- but not exactly that memorable. On the other hand, I will never forget the trips to Thailand and Australia made possible through points (when I was a student and didn't have a lot money). Those were on my first two travel cards (United Mileage Plus Explorer and Citi AAdvantage Gold).

    • @circletech7745
      @circletech7745 Před 5 lety

      Cash back is fungible. I can not only use cash back to buy travel, but also to buy me food, water, shelter, pay for gas, child care, and nearly anything else.
      Points on the other hand can only be used for specific airlines or hotels. Well guess what, I cant pay my rent with points, I cant buy food with points, and I cant pay my utilities with points. I also cant invest my points and earn interest and dividends on my money like I can with cash.
      Yes I do have some travel rewards credit cards, but I dont keep travel credit cards for the long term and I mostly churn them for the bonus. I also only open up travel credit cards if I have a trip planned in the future I would have paid cash for to begin with.
      In summary, I use cash back credit cards for the long term, but churn travel credit cards for the bonus only when I have a trip coming up I would've paid in cash to begin with. Cash to me is more valuble because it can be used for everything, while points and miles cannot.
