    I just had a shock while talking to a Ryobi rep on the phone. Since I'm not the original purchaser, I have absolutely *NO* warranty on anything that may fail. Considering the price of replacement batteries, chargers, and other electronic parts, this is even more motivation for me to sell it to yet another owner who may be willing to accept the risk. Just a warning to others who may be considering buying one of these as a 'used' machine. I think Ryobi needs to step up and eliminate this risk to help the adoption of these types of mowers.

      Have you had any problems? I can tell you aside from the batteries the 2 problems I've had are regular maintenance type items besides the "Cross Cut Blade Adapters" which they seem to be making stronger now. I can't imagine they charge much for that part. I wish you good luck with your machine sir.

      @@LifeAsDane Yes I have! Three of the five 40v batteries have now gone bad (I had an extra). I verified they won't take a charge in the mower or on a separate Ryobi 40v charger. And, the charging of the batteries in the mower is intermittently acting weird. Sometimes swapping 40v batteries to different positions fixes a charging problem. For another thing, I just figured out a few days ago that the charge percentage showing on the display is sometimes very misleading if you just turn on the key to bring up the display to verify the state of charge (when the charger is not plugged in). For the last month it has not been used and has not been plugged in. The charge kept saying 95% when I checked it, so I didn't worry about plugging it in. Then I went to use it a few days ago, and as soon as I started mowing I looked down and saw 68%. So, I stopped it and checked the charge of each battery by manually pushing the button on each. All were good except 2 of the 40v batteries flashed in an abnormal way. Threw them individually on my Ryobi 40v charger and, sure enough, they won't take a charge. Apparently, if a battery will no longer charge, the displayed total charge percentage ignores that battery as if it's not even there!? With the remaining good batteries in the mower, I plugged the mower in last night. This morning I turned the key on and it said 98%. Looked at the battery charge display page, and 2 of the 3 40v batteries showed 3 bars instead of 4. Manually pressing the charge test buttons on them verified this was correct. Unplugged the charger from the mower, then reconnected it, and after a few seconds said that the mower is 100% charged even though 2 of the batteries still show only 3 bars! I'm going to put the 2 3-bar batteries on the separate charger this morning to make sure they can still be charged. Something is really wacky with the charging system on this thing. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this thing now. New 40v batteries are outrageous in price. And I don't like this inconsistent charging wackiness or the apparently-fragile or short-lived nature of the 40v batteries. Maybe not having the charger plugged in for a month is what messed up those 2 batteries? But, why only those 2? All the others remained almost fully-charged. Since we still have a gas zero-turn I suppose I could borrow someone's trailer and bring it in to the nearest Ryobi-authorized shop. But, I'm not going to spend a ton of money fixing this thing, especially considering how these things have had price drops and clearance sales recently. I saw a 42" machine like this recently on clearance for $899! I might have to buy one just for the spare batteries and parts!

    I have 2 acres to mow (minus concrete driveway, a house and a separate garage). I'm already the 3rd owner of this same mower you have here. His story for selling is that he had other smaller Ryobi electric mowers (I saw them), and this one was overkill for his 1/2 acre. Seemed believable, and his nice house and property were in a new neighborhood. He let me mow his yard before I bought it. Seemed to run fine. That joystick wasn't my favorite thing, but I bought it anyway thinking I just need to get used to it. I've mowed only twice with it so far at home. The catch with the mower is that it was missing 2 of the 40v batteries. When I asked him about it before I bought it, he said the guy he bought it had kept 2 of them for other things. So... I didn't get an acre mowed the first time before the batteries were dead. That was on low drive speed and fast blade speed. The 2nd time mowing I used medium blade speed and medium drive speed, and didn't spend much time trimming around our many trees. Most I just went to one side and kept going. I was cruising as fast as it would go other than when I was near obstacles (at a speed I know my wife would never drive it). I managed to get at least 3/4 of the lawn mowed before the batteries were done. That joystick is not nearly as controllable as 2 bars are (like our 54" gas we still have). I have a hard time keeping the mower pointed exactly in the direction I want it to go. There is no spring-centering in the joystick, which I think would help immensely! I also don't really like the fact that you can let go of the joystick and the mower keeps going where you last left the joystick at. If someone has a heart attack, that thing could easily be in a runaway situation. I would much rather that at least the left-right motion would have spring-centering to help in keeping it pointed straight forward. The damping seems excessive, and after a while I get tired of forcing the joystick back and forth having to constantly overcome it. I really don't think my wife (who normally does 90% of our mowing with the gas zero-turn) can ever get used to this joystick. Also, if I buy 2 40v batteries to max the mower's range, I'm still not sure we can get the entire yard done at once at the speed that my wife would cruise with it. Especially if taking the time to trim around the trees (which is the point of a zero-turn!). I'm thinking I just need to clean it up and sell it so someone else can see if they like it enough to keep it. It's too bad... with a bit more battery capacity and a much better joystick setup (mechanical and software), it could be a great mower for us to keep so we could get rid of our aging gas mower. Looks like reasonably-priced electrics just aren't quite there yet for large yards.

    • @LifeAsDane
      @LifeAsDane  Před rokem +1

      Very interesting your results. So you've been able to get 3/4 of your 2acres with 3 80v's and 2 40v's? I think that almost sounds on par, a little less, with my results of about 1/2acre per 20% battery (with all batteries). Also the spring-centering in the joystick would be an amazing idea. Especially since centering and lowering back down to lock position can take a second. I have learned to control the joystick though and my biggest complaint is what you mention, just keeping it straight. My only suggestion is trying everything on Fast (blades and drive speed). Surprisingly Ryobi claims this gets the best results.

    • @BradMosch_engineer
      @BradMosch_engineer Před 11 měsíci +2

      I also observed a major charging system bug I discovered after swapping a few 40v batteries that I just bought from Direct Tools. Any suggestions for a contact? I remember you showed in a previous video a Ryobi rep actually came out to your place to look at your battery problem, so I'm hoping you may actually have some contact info for someone beyond the person I get when calling their general support number (which is pretty much worthless for what I want to tell and ask them). I would like to talk to someone who actually understands the technical details of the mower and may actually have some influence on motivating Ryobi to do a firmware update. Actually... that gives me an idea. I'll search for any events where Ryobi may host mower demonstrations. I may have to catch them at a home expo in Orlando or something like that. I think that may be my only chance for talking to someone worthwhile in the company.

    • @BradMosch_engineer
      @BradMosch_engineer Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@LifeAsDane I went ahead and bought four 40v factory refurbished batteries from Direct Tools so I now have a full set in the mower and 2 extra 40v batteries. I've mowed the entire yard with this mower only once since then, and I was barely able to get our 2-acre yard done after swapping in the 2 extra batteries when the others were discharged. This St. Augustine grass is pretty heavy. I'm also only running medium drive and blade speeds. I can't deal with high drive speed at all since that makes the steering control far too touchy to go around our many trees and also to keep the mower going in a straight line.

    • @rolands50
      @rolands50 Před 2 měsíci

      @@LifeAsDane I disagree about the self-centering joystick. I use a petrol-powered Country Clipper 42" mower, which has pretty much the same control-configuration as this Ryobi. The joystick is also NOT self-centering. A self-centering stick would put a heck of a lot for strain on your wrist with prolonged use, which is why (as I understand) this idea was dismissed by Country-Clipper after in-field testing.

    • @BradMosch_engineer
      @BradMosch_engineer Před 5 dny

      @@rolands50 Well, yes, the spring rates would have to be done right to be appropriate for the application. The joysticks on the radio control for a model car have self-centering for a reason. It would be extremely impractical to be forced to constantly manually hunt for the neutral position of the steering control, which is what I'm *constantly* doing with the joystick on this mower. The spring force wouldn't have to be strong; it needs to be *just* strong enough to bring it back to center. *If* it's done right, it would be a great feature. I see it as an absolutely necessary feature. At the same time, the existing mechanical damping on this thing needs to be dialed down. That's what is really tiring to constantly have to fight against and really tires out my wrist. The horrible steering control on this thing makes my wife not want to drive it, so that alone is a huge negative for us.

    Early in my 2nd summer with the 30” version. I really don’t care for it. Joystick isn’t accurate, tends to get stuck in uneven sections of the lawn, mulching performance is terrible, difficult to hold a straight line over rough sections ( most of my lawn) , a pain to change the blades. Had an old Dixon gas ZTR for 20 years, this doesn’t compare on any cutting or control capabilities.

    It's a safety necessity to not have a seatbelt. If you have a ROPS installed then you have a seatbelt so if you roll the mower over the ROPS protects you and the seatbelt keeps you secured to the mower so you don't get crushed by the rolling mower. If you don't have a ROPS and the mower flips over you need to be able to freely jump off the mower so you don't get crushed. This is the standard across the industry due to safety reasons. Just responding so it's understood why there is no seatbelt. Ultimately it sounds like they need to improve that brake.

    I have hesitant on buying a zero turn mower because the traditional type rewuires 2 hands. That means no free hand for my beer! Now with this model I can have zero turn and drink my beer too!

      Exactly what I was thinking! I quickly learned that drinking anything while mowing is quite difficult and a straw is necessary lol.

    Thanks for the review but calling a mower a 'vehicle'? Huh?

    I love the electric idea, but these are just extremely overpriced. Twice the price of a gas model.

    Your claim that it cost nothing to run this mower. Sorry, you are wrong. If I bought a gas mower and bought a 300-gallon tank and filled it up at $3 per gallon. I than filled my gas mower from that storage tank for a year. My cost of running it would be $900. You have batters that cost ???? and a charger and a rechargeable generator. That cost of all that is your fuel cost to run your mower. That is the truth. Take the cost of generator and batteries along. cost thousands. My est. is $900 a year for me. How many years will it take for my cost of gas to match your cost of the initial investment in batteries and generator? A guy buys a boat for $40,000.00 and say he is fishing and eating fish for free. I buy fish at fish markets at $20 buck and eat the same fish he catches. Who spent less to eat fish?

      Howdy, not sure exactly what I said in this video from a year or so back, but lets get scientific!
      My "generator" to charge my batteries is our electric company, FPL. There is no cost besides the "charging" costs. The charger came with the mower purchase so my initial purchase includes what I need besides the actual power that costs me roughly $.14kWh. That "rough" cost factors in the base usage fees etc. The total kWh these 7 batteries hold equates to 4.32 kW. (x3 80v 10Ah = 2.4kWh & x4 40v 12Ah). Taking certain factors into account we can say it costs me about $1 to charge? Maybe math is really off but I believe I'm being generous with the round up to $1. That $1 of charge allows me to cut my entire 2.2acres with an average of 25% left in battery life. So $.75/mow I've paid NO other costs up to this point now 2years later besides $45 replacement blades. I've replaced a few cross-cut blade adapters that were free due to warranty and Ryobi just being cool about it.
      If we want to use some basic math the Yearly "Fuel/Electric" for an Electric mower Vs Gas with Weekly Mows... $4/mo for the electric & $14/mo for the Gas Zero turn (assuming 1gal allows 2acres in gas) so $120/yr in fuel savings. BUT getting detailed like you did there are obviously world costs. Such as the need to drive to go get your gasoline because it's not like you have a fuel tank sitting on your property. But truth is we don't need to get technical. The cost of this mower has dropped a bunch and the engine of a zero-turn will definitely have more maintenance long term. But at least it can be fixed with some good ol labor and time.

      Even at current prices, let alone when they came out, the average person will never break even on these. Gas would need to get a lot more expensive to achieve any reasonable payback period, and that assumes the batteries last long term.
      The spring black Friday deal was the first time they were price competitive with comparable gas machines, so if you were willing to gamble on battery longevity, it makes sense.
      I just picked up the 30" today on their close out deal for $799. That's definitely worth it, even if the batteries have to be replaced in a couple years.
      But at $900/battery, it's a pretty big gamble at regular prices.
