    Try this for edge highlighting: wet the mini's surface first with a clean brush, just a little. Then use a dry pencil on the edges. This should give you much more control than making the pencil itself wet and all mushy.

    • @nameisbad
      @nameisbad Před 7 měsíci +1

      so easy for it to mess up + it's more work at that point than using a brush to paint the edge highlights.

    Try using a sponge that's got most of the water squeezed out for dampening the lead *just a little* might give you more control for that edge highlighting issue.

    i love your tip on the pouches, and small accessories on the models which aren't super important. Your advice about just leaving them the base green color and just adding a dash of highlights before slapping some contrast paints on them is brilliant. what a great time saving tip, when you explained it, it makes so much sense.

    I’ve been using watercolour pencils like this for quite awhile. Any decent watercolour pencils will do. I will normally give the model a clear matte varnish with an airbrush after I’m done. I’ve also been using mica powders and soft pastels (non oil pastels) to get a similar effect. Great for dry brushing too. I imagine that AK set won’t be cheap, so you can save some money by buying watercolour pencils instead.

    • @rogthepirate4593
      @rogthepirate4593 Před 8 měsíci

      Pastels are great in general. Still have an old set of pastel chalks lying around from my school days. Turns out that you can grind them up very easily to get something very similar to pure pigment powders. It's my go-to whenever I need non-standard colors, instead of buying yet another pot of pigment for way too much money.

    Awesome timing. My set of these arrived last week. Turns out you can get a more controlled vibrancy boost from them by warming the tips with a blow dryer. Also once it's all dry you can remove unwanted parts with a good quality pencil eraser.

    They're made with grease paint so you should try heating them up, the grease acts a bit like wax or oil so it should soften them and allow the pigment to come off without losing any control

      That was the standout in this video for me, too. I don't know why I never thought about it before, considering I do underpainting on all of my minis, but it's just one of those things that slipped my mind I guess. Do underpainting even during the process, not just during the prep steps, ya dingus! Haha.

    I do doll repainting so using watercolour pencils is normal to me - but to get them to stick well you need a good surface, we swear by Mister Super Clear matte fixative, or Windsor or Newton spray fixative, then you can use water to activate, or paint directly from the pencil,

    These make me think a lot about the techniques popular in the doll repainting community, as water colour pencils are a major part of the process for a lot of customisers. I wonder if there are any other materials popular in that craft which would translate well to use in mini painting, maybe chalk pastels/pan pastels might be something to try out. I feel like they'd be similar to weathering powders but have such a range of colours options they could be used for all sorts!

    You need a long point pencil sharpener to give you a super fine point you were looking for. And all pencils usually leave the blunt end when shipping to protect the pencil from damage over shipping. Once you have used the fine tip to do those edge details then you can use the pencil to do the rest. Also if you want ir need to you can use your brush on the pencil tip to get concentrated amount on the brush to do other detailing. Coloring bliss has a good example of working with inktense ink based pencils that shows these techniques. I am pleasantly surprised to be able to share this with you while I am waiting for my paints and brushes to come in from Amazon so I can start my very first mini. I am so excited.

      Also yes wet tip will give intense color. Forgot that from the above statement. If you need to resharpen after wet you would need for it to dry before doing it. You might be able to dry out the lead faster with hairdryer or heat gun... but that may take some practice so you don't damage the lead.

    • @ChronicBronchitis-mz2vn
      @ChronicBronchitis-mz2vn Před 9 měsíci +1

      It also depends on the color and whatever pigment they use in the pencils. I've noticed texture and consistency differences in the same lines. I think it just takes time to find the right ones for what you need.

    • @RainMakeR_Workshop
      @RainMakeR_Workshop Před 9 měsíci +4

      @@ChronicBronchitis-mz2vn Never personally noticed an issue. But to be fair, I already had artist-grade watercolour and oil pencils that are more expensive and have better pigment transfer than the type you'd pickup form most stores. So maybe its the quality of the pencils I use.
