- Firstly, apologies for the long absence (by my usual standards anyway). Taking advantage of a rare sunny and crisp weather window I chose to return to my local moors, walking in a landscape where, millennia ago, Mesolithic hunter-gatherers would spend their summers and in more recent times, where old moormen would live their lonely lives on the moor-edge.

Great to see you back out Chris and re enthused. Top work in getting Joe's gravestone uncovered. Youre excellent at putting these stories across. I'm a bit like youreslef in finding late Autumn and early winter a bind. Not so much for the weather, although it has been too bloody wet, but more the very long dark nights. As much as I love wild camping, being in the tent for 16 hours or so, takes a bit of motivation. I tend to stick local to home as well, my area of choice is The West Pennine Moors. Some superb camping spots to be found. I tend to carry a hell of a lot of gear in Winter to get through the long nights in as much comfort as is possible in a tent !! Cooking a good hot meal, gives me a massive boost. 👍

How do Mark. Oooh a silver or gold tooth would be a cool find. I was thinking of you the other day. I read a about a new pilgrimage walking route through the Olchon Valley. I think I suffer a bit with that SAD thing (Seasonal Affected Disorder) which might be hereditary as both my parents did too which doesn't help. I'll feel better when we hit the Winter Solstice in a few days, knowing the days start to get longer. Hope you're well and Merry Christmas and a happy New Year 🎄

Don't beat yourself up about motivation around this time of year. I mourn the end of summer with the dwindling daylight and probably suffer from a mild form of SAD. Once we get into Nov/Dec, I've accepted it. I depend on good weather for work in the summer months, so watch it keenly, and it's been largely grim since the beginning of July, so this doesn't help either.
Fascinating tale about the moorsman Chris and well done for your dogged determination in restoring his grave.
Lovely work from Beth to keep your bonce warm. Maybe she could crochet an extension for the conk, giving you a medieval Norman archer look 😂.
I have one each knitted by my mother and mother in law. They really are better than anything I've bought.

Thanks mate for your words of encouragement. I'm with you, I think I have SAD to some extent (both my parents did so it must be in my DNA!). If we get a decent autumn I do okay but this year's has been a shocker.

It’s unbelievable how historical characters and monuments were treated in the past. King Richard 111, was found in a Leicester car park. Probably under a Ford Fiesta😂

No matter how much I enjoy mountains and wild places far away, I always enjoy our local hills. White Hill is one of my favourite places after heavy snowfalls, when the roads are nigh impassable. It's easy to drive up the M62 which is one of the first roads to be kept clear, park by the motorway slip road, and head out into the deep snow to White Hill (and if the weather turns snowy again, the motorway is a safe exit route). It was good to see the gravestone of old Joe.
Hello Michael. I agree. I'd be lost without our local moors close at hand. I remember my first ever visit to White Hill, it was 1987 and I was just a lad. Me and an old pal walked up there from Milnrow, via Denshaw. Good memories.

We are very lucky to have this wonderful countryside on our doorstep ( I live in Rochdale also ) often i am out either solo or with the wife. i am so grateful to easy my mental health whilst plodding the hills..... thank you for posting, and I've just subscribed.

What a superb write up about joe, for people who don't know the history of Joe it is well worth looking at some of Ammon Wrigleys stories.If you follow the old road out of Denshaw on the way past New years Day reservoir there are some splendid ruins at Dowry Castle on the left hand side of the valley but more importantly as the road starts to climb there is a small semi hidden bridge on the left, if you cross over this and follow the side of the hill you will come to the ruin of Joes farm near a tumbledown wall......Getting back to the Ammon Wrigley books, he also wrote a story about achap known as "bits o cheese", i have often wondered if there is any more information about him, he lived in a cottage just below Pots and Pans which has now been demolished , I think in the Yarm hill area. I don't live in the area any more but thought you might like a challenge. Bits o Cheese storey is in Ammon Wrigleys " The Wind among the heather" book.
Thanks Lyn. I'm not sure when you left the area but sadly Ragstones Bridge is no more. I first visited Ragstones in the 1990s I think it was and I had to leap across the brook to get there. I wonder when it was removed?
I have Wind Amongst the Heather and know about Bits o' Cheese. In Sam Seville's book, he describes a character known as Owd Greg (there is a photo too) and he speculates whether he could be Bits o' Cheese. He's not 100 per-cent though.
I'm a big AW fan, have all his books and always enjoy walking in his footsteps.

Glad to see a new video. I live at 64 north latitude and I think you are about at 54? In October and November - also not great months for my energy levels given our rapidly diminishing daylight - I use a "sad" or "happy" light, as they're known where I live. It's for seasonal affective disorder "sad," with a lamp with 10,000 lumens brightness. I have my coffee and sit near the light for 30-45 minutes every morning and it works wonders. Less fatigue, more energy, less desire to overeat, eat sugar, engage in bad habits generally. Not sure if it would work for you, but when I do not use it, I notice it within a few days. When I resume, the energy returns quickly. By Christmastime, I'm so busy I don't really need it and then after solstice the return of the light replaces it. Sometimes I use it in January, then done for the year. Sure it raises the electric rates, but to me it's worth the better mood.
Hello Karen. I know I struggle in late autumn and early winter.....both my parents did too so I guess it's in the genes! I have considered using artificial lights to see if they make a difference and judging by your experiences I suspect they would. I shall see what is available over here. Same to you too :) I think the likes of CS and others like him would have the graves desecrated by the victims and people in general. It always surprises me that there are not more graves and gravestones when you consider how long humans have practiced burials in various religions . Personally i am a big believer in reincarnation and with the cost of funerals these days if theres any use to medical science once my corps has stopped hiking then the hospitals can have my shell as long as they get rid of the bits they dont have any use for for free :)@@ChrisJB

Great to see you out again Chris, the weather has been so poor, I’ve also struggled to get out, planned a couple of times to do Wards Stone but weather put paid to plans! Going to try again in January. Last trip 5 weeks ago was Fair Brook Naze on Kinder, a very windy affair in the Notch but it stood up well to 30mph gusts! Happy Christmas!

Where do I start? Feeling low, totally empathise with you on that one. Is it the time of year or the general state of things? I don’t know but it does feel gloomy. However, you’ve brightened my day tremendously with this video so we’ll done that man. Small victories are what define us as individuals railing against the system that tries to keep us down. It’s why we are wild campers, individuals at heart. Gosh this is turning into a bit of a rant. Keep up the good work Chris, we all appreciate your efforts.
Hello Richard. I'm pretty sure I suffer with a bit of that seasonal SAD thing. Both my ma and pa did so it's probably in my DNA. If we get a decent and bright autumn it's not so bad but this autumn has been utterly dreadful.....really dismal.
Joe's grave went beyond the respectful and historical merits of making his stone visible. I knew it was the right thing to do and just wouldn't let it go, despite petty obstacles to try to dissuade me. They just made me more determined 😎.

Totally agree with you on the motivation especially with the horrible weather we've had I did a snow camp cpl weeks ago 1st camp in nearly a month.btw my mum needs a new cosy for her teapot can I have your hat lol😂

Good to have you back Chris, fully understand your Oct/Nov blues, depressing weather and lack of motivation. Back on the horse though and another little gem of a camp with interesting and amusing tales to tell. Thank you. Just as an aside, how are you getting on with the Altra's? I bought the Timp 4's after your use of them and found them comfortable (wide fit like you say) from the off, but obviously with the weather change they'll be kept to one side for Spring for now and a more exhaustive trial then..... I'm not a runner, just a day walker who doesn't get on with boots so much 😊

As for the Altra's, I love them! Another reason I don't like winter, the conditions underfoot makes me opt for big clumpy boots. I'd prefer to use the Altra's all year round (I don' get on with boots much either). Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. 🎄

Mate, I’ve been through a similar drought of camps. The weather has been dire, wet and windy. Last camp I did was Langdale a couple of months ago. I’ve done a few lower level trips. I’m gonna go for it after Xmas whatever happens. Good to see you back, I was just going to say, come back Chris all is forgiven😂. Nice hat pal, it’ll keep the woodpeckers off😂atb

@@hangoutwithdeggers Prior to the Hero 10 I used a Hero 7 which was very glitchy (would freeze and I'd have to take the batteries out which could be annoying). The Hero 10 is less glitchy but does freeze occasionally. I've never had an issue with overheating.
