  • Being the highest point of proper Lancashire, I have been meaning to do Coniston Old Man for years. I'm not sure why I have never got round to it really, I guess something else has always appealed more when I've been in the area.
However, a recent stay at Hawkshead YHA with family gave me the necessary impetus to do it and I'm glad I did. I found it to be a superb and varied walk, with the Old Man well able to hold its head high amongst the best of the Lakeland Fells. It was very busy, which isn't surprising considering how good a mountain it is.

Bethany's a natural! Great to get the kids up there, even if it means a bit of whining on the way up. I whined a lot as a kid, but my parents persisted, usually with a bit of candy for our successes. Sundays weren't church for us, they were outdoor walks in interesting places. As an adult, I'm so grateful for their encouragement!

Oh she loves the limelight Karen. She should come along more often as my own personal camera-person.....though 99 per-cent of the footage would be of her and not me!

Great to get the family out for a hike 👍
I suppose this is where my proper roots are...all my Grandparents were from Coniston, Uncles and Great Uncles worked in the quarries on the Old Man...Mandalls then Brosan Stane (Bursting Stone)... Great Uncle Frank had "The Ship" back in the 50's
That's one of my favourite walks in the Lakes... although I usually do it the other way round.
