- With full winter gear on my back I set off seeking my usual fix of solitude in The Peak District up high on the moorland at one of my favourite hangouts on the most magnificent little edge nestled in amongst the famous Higgor Tor and Over Owler Tor. As forecast, the temperature dropped and the snow fell thick and steady after dark, covering the U.K. in a blanket of beautiful white. I woke up in my toasty warm sleeping bag, drank steamy Yorkshire tea before first light admiring the glow of my tent. Like a glowing beacon she was. I didnt want to leave. My heart is still so full from my first experience of camping in the snow ❄️⛄️

Hey David 👋🏻 thanks for stopping by…yeah I haven’t had a beer in the tent yet nor have I camped on the fells, sometimes take a small tipple to enjoy but it’s usually a pinacolada. Mostly I’m happy with a hot chocolate during these frozen nights, can’t beat it. See you on the next one, ATB, Sarah
I used to do a lot of fell walking almost killed myself a couple of times with hypothermia back in the day

Started following your journeys quite recently and watching all your videos in chronological order and this one I like the most so far, you exude such positivity (as always) and I, like most outdoor geeks, like your informativeness about your equipment, keep it up so, you are doing everything right!

I think if you do it for the love of the actual hike and camp then there’s nothing that’s going to stop the passion shining through because in all honesty it’s that which keeps calling me out there! Ha ha! I’ve relaxed more into talking if you havnt noticed 😄 the fact I talk about eating meconium noodles was absolutely not rehearsed, rather more of a sensory experience 😂💩 love dem noodles 🍜

Wonder how many of those cars in the layby stayed the night. You mentioned your Motorola, I’ve heard good things about them so will be looking out for future comments. Glad you are pleased with your Speedster stove, funny how when I was starting out Trangia was king, then gas and petrol took over now there seems to be a bit of a shift back to alcohol burners, slow, safe, reliable and perhaps best still quiet. You mentioned the sound of the snow, when it really comes down if its not windy it attenuates all sound, quite eerie. Have you ever been in a whiteout? Now that is an experience, no horizon, now sky, it’s actually quite surreal and spiritual. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed your first snow camp, that you made it safely home and most of all that you took us with you.

Hi Graham 😊I can confirm nobody stayed in that lay-by as my car was all on its lonesome when I returned. I had to dig it out and turn it round back to the direction of Sheffield, the odd car passed and it was good to see others making their way out for a look…including a man on skis 🎿 he got a massive thumbs up from me! I wasn’t expecting such still was as the wind usually blows there so that was surreal. I find all of my camps spiritual and incredibly grounding, back to nature, appreciation and simplicity especially with the stove. Spirit burners are my favourite. See ya on the next one ⛺️✨BW, Sarah

Have you experienced this, the week before your stay on the south edge across from you here. I was watched by a drone for 5 minutes directly above my head. This was in the dark at 11pm. The drone flew over to a vehicle that had an illuminated light bar on the roof. Rest of the night was quiet.

If you were near surpriseview car park 🅿️ it’s usually got camper vans in it. I wonder if they had infrared as otherwise I doubt you’d have been visible …still, that would freak me out mate

Yaktrax for Sarah, Santa! Then you can wear them or not when conditions dictate. All the natives here have winter tyres on over winter, we did have minus 6 and it’s still frozen solid and snowed over in the Grampian foothills. Brrr! 😊

Lovely Vid. My wife often says things like that when i head out, "You do know what the temperature, rain, wind, snow forecast will be, don't you?" For my big 50 birthday, she gave me a wedge of money for a nice ebay tent and new hatch covers for my sea kayak. Seem to remember from an earlier vid, your husband got you an early birthday tent. My wife is awesome, think your husband might also be awesome for you.

One thing for sure, for those that have not experienced what you have now, there are no words to aptly express the fulfilling experience you have had on that night! One bit of advice I can give to identify gaps in rocks before climbing them is an Anti Personnel Flame Thrower; found it does the trick quite adequately! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love the video, keep em coming!

I saw some of your pictures on Instagram and the video appeared on my CZcams feed. I share lots of your feelings about solo camping. I lead such a non-stop life and am always in a rush. Having nothing to do except relax, cook some food, drink some warm drinks and look at the beautiful scenery is pure bliss. I love it. That snowman segment had me with tea ( Welsh Brew ) coming down my nose.It was beautiful as well as funny. I did toy with buying some down trousers but then I thought: how will my internet history look if I've been googling 'Down pants' Any road uppards, you don't need all those fancy clothes to see you through winter.You really don't. Come early november my mum applies a generous layer of goose grease to my whole torso.She then wraps me in brown paper and sews me into a brand new M&S vest.This all remains in situ until late spring when I am hosed down in the back yard. Oft times I've heard some insensitive bugger ask, What the f*ck is that smell? But I don't care,I am toasty warm all winter and for very little outlay. Take care Sarah and keep up whatever,Mike.

You lucky beggar, snow camps are the best. I bet a bag of my leftover snap would have gone down a treat up there. Made me laugh when you said "I'm off the dehydrated meals" whilst tucking into a dehydrated Soba noodle. They are the best though. If I'd have known you were in the area I would have let you have my bag of beef stroganoff and pasta that I carried round with me (I was walking down the Burbage valley path about 2.30pm). We never stopped for a good feed on our walk, just ate snacks, so I had it when I got home. I do hope this is not the last of the snow for this season. I want to hear the crump of deep snow under my feet first hand. Mad woman in her element. ATB.

Fantastic video and well done - really inspiring. I was out on Higgar Tor on the Saturday and it was really cold and icy. Must have been so cold overnight. But looked to be well worth it. Also well done for getting back home as well. Even the roads where I live in Sheffield were treacherous.

In the week but all the planets were aligned and I really couldn’t wait to get out. I think it’s obvious from my videos how much I love the area. I felt the cold mostly in the early evening when -2 came around. It felt much colder in the wind so I was happy to have my tent well pitched to dive into. Glad you made it out to Higgor Tor, isn’t she just awesome!?BW, Sarah

If you mean on the way to camp then yes, Higgor Tor is a favourite place for many but I can tell you that once the sun went to sleep everyone buggered off and I saw and heard nobody apart from a few head torches from late stranglers or maybe a camper? I purposefully go out of my way to make sure I’m alone for my own safety so always away from paths. I’m a massive lover of my own company 😂

@@SoloSarahBX occasionally I used to take patients for a home visit to see how they might cope at home, id borrow a Berlingo from patient transport it was one with a high extended back (could get a Wheelchair with the patient strapped in it in the back) we called it the
Pope mobile.
I remember one patient pretending to be the Pope as we drove up the high street, he was making the sign of the cross to people as we went past.

I once tried to find the Etymology meaning of Higger. A Basque word meaning meeting place is all I could find. It fits nowhere else so am presuming it's from the little known ancient Brythonic celt tongue. Stanage edge means Stone age edge. Incidently Stonehenge was known as Stanage henge 400 years ago. Burbage is Saxon for the edge at the fort. Carl Wark was once known as the Fox house meaning the Devils house. Giving the fort Druidic connotations.

People ask me if I’m scared and I’m not. Kinder Scout fascinates me beyond measure but the Burbage Valley and Higgor feel like home
I worked on Longshaw back in the 80's & Peak park. Was fortunate to have spoken to the Warden at the time Steve Walker. He gave me a tour. I was a sponge he was a mine of information. The area being his passion & him being Oxford historian made it very interesting. Fear attracts danger. Confidence is a good shield. Regards the spiritual connection. You appear native. The graves on Baslow moor are 4,500 years old. I get the sense of belonging up there. So did my father. Often stumble across fragments ashes & dust up there. Higger Tor will do for me come the day. @@SoloSarahBX

@@SoloSarahBX I think I need to get a proper set up and do all this myself. I have a Nice backpacker tent (Naturehike Cloudpeak 2) just not much else yet! ...and sadly I think the Berlingo is ready for the scrappers..along with several other things it needs a new clutch. Ah well keep dreaming....

Hillary Hilleberg retails at stupid prices these days. Wild campers bought a Soulo for around £450 a few years back, now it’s double. Ya know what though? She was my 40th birthday present from my Mr so he must think my hubby is worth it 😂ATB, Sarah

Interesting observations there Twiggy! Thanks for stopping by as always ☺️ it isn’t easy at all is it? Even getting in and out of the tent or toileting and turning over in a sleeping bag and having to heat water etc etc. i think my hardest part was climbing up Higgor in the snow with my pack on back to the car 😅 on my knees I like the challenge if it all and in general I think you’ll find I am a genuinely positive upbeat person. I’m really pleased with my set up at present. Might go up a notch in the sleep mat as fancy a thermarest with the chair for lazing about in with my brew 🤩⛺️ looking forward to your next vid if you filmed! ❄️BW, Sarah

Yes you’re right, filming it is also the challenge but enjoyment too. If I didn’t make a video for my camp I’d be just as happy if not a little more quiet 😅 but I do talk to myself anyway so why not share it? Subs a 1000? No way! I’m not in the same league as thee! 👌🏻✨⛺️

Please can you tell me I had the compact 1 but sold it because I'm 6ft it felt to short is there more room in the solo there's only you and pat dickenson in Sheffield I know that has one love to see one before order one I live Sheffield so if you ever set up on graves Park let me know lol ps found note book at secret camp nice to see pat been and commented 👍
@@garethbirch7168 hey 👋🏻 that’s so great that he’s been and made an entry in the book, I may have to take one of my other dogs to read it and film our escapade soon! The Soulo is a very similar footprint to the Helm 1 but I know Andrew Beavers has one and he’s over 6ft I’m sure Pat is tall too. I find the Soulo bigger lengthways for sure 👌🏻

@@KieronGazza hey 👋🏻 when I was at uni aged 19 I joined the University Officer Training Corps in Beeston/East Midlands EMUOTC) it was an amazing few years learning so many skills in my spare time and I even got paid for it. We went on adventure training around various parts of the world, fondest memories but also some of the hardest. The combat fitness test was gruelling having to keep up with men of 6 feet, century shift duty drinking army ration hot chocolate trying to stay awake to look for Zulu company who were our enemy fire was tough in snow when I was tired. Getting up and out to the sound of gunfire wether it be playing soldiers or not was one of the most adrenaline fuelled things I’ve ever done. Navigating with night vision to base camps to riding a horse across the Canadian Rocky Mountains, sounds like a dream from a younger simpler time. leading my platoon in drill was a particular highlight. You must have seen all sorts. Upmost respect ✊

Hey 👋🏻 thank you for stopping by…no it stands in the aluminium plate that comes with the set and is perfectly safe to sit on ground in the footprint. I think I maybe used used my seat pad to steady the burner and windshield for cooking a curry on my latest video on Kinder Scout, BW, Sarah

I love my NH down pants. 🩲 bought some down booties too for sleeping in. Toasty! 😍 and my electronic handwarmer in the sleeping bag is just divine. I'm intrigued by the stove set up. What's it stood on please?
Hi Sue 👋🏻thanks for stopping by and taking the time to share the down pant love 🙏🏻 they are a really decent bit of kit essential for me in these colder camps. My stove comes as a complete set up by Speedster stoves. It’s called ‘Boarder Raider cook set’ windshield and aluminium mat fits inside the 500ml pot with the non-spill spirit burner. I placed it on my footprint of the tent. The fold out metal mat is great. I’ve cooked a curry on it recently in my last vid ‘fear and motivation’ you’ll
