  • I had planned to wait until spring and some decent weather to finish the 'Dales 30' (hills/mountains in the Yorkshire Dales over 2000') but impatience got the better of me. I camped on nearby Fountains Fell, which was coincidentally, my first ever Dales 30.

      Thanks Dave. Now you've got me thinking about one of my favourite YT films and I noticed that you had commented on it too when I watched it. It was by 'Morgs for Mountains' and he did a big walk linking most of the 2000' hills of the North Pennines. I loved that film. He used a Tarptent Notch too.
      Joining up the Dales 30 into one trip is a brilliant idea and I think you're just the man to do it first. That would make a splendid film. With all your long-distance walking experience I reckon it would be right up your street 🙂 . Bye for now, Chris

    Great that your trip worked out Chris! Sure was windy, but beautiful! I love seeing the rock walls as you’re going along. Congrats on finishing the Dales 30- fun to hear about you and your pals back in the day. You had quite an adventure! Seems like it was a perfect taste of freedom. Isn’t it great that the gear has improved over the years and doesn’t weigh quite so much these days. I remember my first backpack trip was with a summer camp group - we all crammed in a small tent, quite memorable! Loved being in the mountains! Thanks for sharing your adventure- see you again soon! 🌟🌟🌟 - Jen

      @ChrisJB  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hello Jennifer. Yes, it took me a good few years to get the Dales 30 done but the pressure is off now! To be honest, up until about two years ago I'd never heard of the Dales 30. When I did, I checked and found that I had done about 23 of them without realising. I figured then, I may as well do the last seven 🙂.
      The dry-stone walls are very useful. Not only do they offer shelter from the wind but in many cases they can be used as a navigational hand-rail, very handy in poor visibility, etc.
      Thank you as always for watching and commenting and bye for now, Chris

    • @JenniferLupine
      @JenniferLupine Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@ChrisJB Very useful to have the dry-stone walls for navigation … it seems they’ve been there a very long time- we don’t quite have anything like it. Awesome that you only had 7 Dales do finish up… sure gets you out to see all the varied countryside! Are you going out to look for orchids and early wildflowers soon? We have a pink orchid called Lady Slippers that we can find in the forest- one of our early wildflowers!! I’m hoping to see it in April. Thanks - see you soon! Jen

    Well done on t 30 pal. A belter of a video as always.
    Fountains fell is a little favourite of mine. I did it a few years back and was convinced i got a speeding ticket on the A65 heading into Settle. Got to the start point, and the fog was well set in. Not in the best of moods i set off onto the fell... and then it happened! Probably the best cloud inversion I've ever seen. I was walking above the cloud from Fountains fell over to Darnbrook and back.
    Properly cheered me up.

    Aye up Chris….another great post lad.
    You can’t beat vernacular colloquialism can you ???!!!
    Like you it’s all about recognition of the local researchers who do the graft to put the info out into the public domain.
    A 17th quote….long live the pamphlet…..today long live the leaflet the self funded booklet and local history resources funded by LAs
    I’m only happy to buy local info or pagefund local historians it’s the only way of making things happen with today’s austerity in regards to local history.
    But the age of the vlogger comes along and thrusts the ethos of the pamphleteers and agitators into another dimension…so not wanting to big you up lad, apart from the enjoyment of your posts, the landscapes, the kit, the hobby , it also has that new protagonist aspect to it a new dimension of what you and my sources of information seek from their and your audience.
    Knowledge, respect , acknowledgement, sharing and a new method as you do of contemporary presentation method dare I say the good old aspect of agitation to protect our historic landscapes.
    Anyways Chris I’ve blathered enough….last few days diving now in Thailand…big stuff tho know big palegics etc in the Andaman Sea off the Sicilians…then back om lad fo sum rate wetha.
    Thanks for the post…take care Chris…Ron

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Many thanks for the generous words Ron. The South Pennines is a great area on the local history front. Lots has been put into print from some of the wonderful local autodidacts and others down the years. As well as learning what they write about, I like collecting their stuff.
      I bet Thailand has been magic, I like sea creatures. I had a look at some of the things to be found in the Andaman Sea, some well good things there, dugongs, turtles, etc.

From the fossil coral to the early ring ouzel and the curlew keeping you company back to the car👍. Its these little nuggets of info, that make your videos stand out👌. Great story from 1988 and trying to fix the cannister stand hilarious 🤣. 🧐 Still think you need them cross poles for your Tarp tent. The three poles on my Soulo gives me a great sense of security and therefore a better night sleep 💤 ATB😉

A few folk have said I need the Scarp crossing poles but they just strike me as a bit of a faff and I can't really be arsed with them. On recent camps I've been sleeping much better and I'm starting to think the new Thermarest mat is the difference. Not really sure.

      I'm not going to show my daughter your 'tea cosy' comment Dave as she crocheted the hat, so I feel obliged to wear it! Ha ha! 😉

    I was over in the Dales myself last week...Austwick and the Norber Boulders! It sounded windy, Darnbrook Fell is tough underfoot whichever way you go from memory.
    Congratulations on completing the Dales 30👌
    Last time I was on Darnbrook I found an iPhone! Lucky seeing a Ring Ouzel 👍
    Another enjoyable video, thanks for sharing ATB Alistair 👍

      You know Alistair, to say the Dales is my favourite National Park and I'm into geology, I've never visited the Norber Erratics. I need to put that right.
      Best wishes, Chris

    Good trip. Good to have better weather and longer days to look forward to. I know too well the feeling of finding it hard after a period of less than usual activity. The trig point, amid peat and with its foundation exposed, reminded me of Black Hill as it used to be.

      Hello Michael. Yes, I've been more inactive than normal this winter and I can definitely feel it. When I was a young chap I could shake off any lethargy quite quickly but not so anymore! You are absolutely right re the trig point.....I thought of Black Hill too.

    Well done Chris. Better late than never hey haha. Love your enthusiasm for it and your joy on top of the cairn. Always nice to tick something off you’ve been working on especially over the time.
    I’m sure one day you’ll be treated to some lovely weather on a camp haha. Great to see you out again. I’ve just picked a Scarp One up again…sold mine a year or so again and had an opportunity to get one again so have it. Always liked that tent.
    Keep up the vids and all the stories and info I always love listening to it.

      Cheers Kris pal. This bleedin' rain is killing me! This has got to be the worst winter ever, so few sunny, crisp frosty days and hardly any snow.
      I've noticed one or two Scarps up for sale recently. It has a couple of niggles, as all tents do, but I've had mine for almost four years now and I do like it. It's hard to beat for it's weight, to space, to strength ratio for long dark winter camps. Saying that, I'll be glad to put it away for the summer when lighter gear takes over 👌
      Hope you are well mate and bye for now. 🙂

    How do Chris congrats tbh I think people who fly round bagging peaks in short periods miss the point and probably don't remember half of them.its Thursday so deep diving the weather apps and route planning and kit checking for this weekend in the Cheviots 👍

    Congratulations on the 30 Chris. Looked very boggy in places? Everywhere is just saturated, isn't it. I've never known a wet spell so prolonged.

    Nice one Chris. You reversed the route I took. The solution to the canister stand gymnastics is the MSR Universal canister stand. It’s metal and has a lovely spring loaded clamp which holds the thing on the canister. It is very stable and only a few grams heavier than the flimsy plastic ones. Its circumference is quite a bit bigger, which makes it so stable (See my Langdale Stickle tarn camp for a view of it.) Cheers mate always love your vids.
