    I have the 2018 one, with the same fly screen and exhaust as this one. The suspension is terrible, the brakes aren't confidence inspiring, ABS is far too sensitive and the horn button still catches me out sometimes after 11 months (3700 miles and counting). But still, that engine is just so good. It looks cool as fuck and sounds great too. It's fun for evening and weekend rides on the type of roads you rode in this video but being small and light, it's also good fun to filter through a city in rush hour on.
    For those of us who have yet to hit on the kind of financial success that enables casually dropping nearly half a year's wages on a Street Triple or KTM, I don't think there's a more fun or better all around middle-weight naked bike.

    • @Tonyx.yt.
      @Tonyx.yt. Před 5 lety +1

      Poor suspension and mediocre brakes seems a common problem in the affordable middleweight class... See mt07, SV 650, z650.

    I’m very excited for the 2021 MT-07 update. If it’s anything like the 2020 Tracer 700 I assume it will fix most of the issues. I’d buy the new Tracer 700 if they sold it in the US! Anyway, I had a 2015 one of these and the engine was absolutely the highlight, but the brakes and suspension ruined the whole experience. They must be upgraded. 4 years later I have a current SV650 and it’s better in almost every respect. Which has the better engine/transmission or styling is debatable. Oh and the seat on the SV650 is an absolute plank, but the 2015 MT-07 wasn’t much better and I’m happy they improved it for the current one. Overall I think the Yamaha wins for ergonomics, especially legroom, but handling and overall refinement I give to the Suzuki.

      Yamaha have been the most unreliable brand I've owned. Stats are of little comfort when you have issues. Can you provide the source for that information too? @@Steve-motorcycles Did you know Yamaha had the highest number of recalls over the last decade? I think the study you are referring to is the consumer reports reliability study, which studied 11,000 consumers who bought new motorcycles between 2008 and 2014. If you look at total sales over those years though, the report covers a tiny fraction and it was more of a survey really. So not really accurate at all to determine the most reliable brand as it's a tiny snapshot of total worldwide sales. Either way, all brands have issues but Yam has had the most for me. Honda has been the most reliable for me personally.

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Před 4 lety +1

      ACF50 never solved the issue. I even had a new swingarm under warranty which was corroding after 4 months. It's preventative and not a magic cure. I had EBC pads on the mine which were better but they're still pretty awful brakes.

    • @Steve-motorcycles
      @Steve-motorcycles Před 4 lety +2

      EnglishBikerDan mine is a 2016 bike with 35k on the clock. When I got the bike I dabbed a bit oh black Hammerite paint along the weld and under the chain,, sprayed it with acf50 regularly and never had an issue.
      The brakes are not the best but swapped the pads recently with Brembo’s and they are so much better.
      As for the coolant pipes, I have sprayed those with heat resistant engine paint and they look like new. A tad of maintenance on this bike and it will last the test of time. For the price, it’s a great bike. I commute all year round so it’s now been through 4 winters

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Před 4 lety

      @@Steve-motorcycles I had mine around 3 years and did about 25k miles in total and 2 winters. The swingarm was rusty, frame (under the tank) was rusted, lots of other minor areas too. Coolant pipes of course as that's a well known one. It's a cheaply made fun bike but sometimes, giving it all the TLC makes little difference as the paint is so thin. I know many people powder coat the swingarm now which resolves the issue. It should be needed though. I also had about 4 sensors fail in those 3 years so it left a very bad taste. It was the most unreliable bike I've had in 20 years. A real shame as that engine is awesome.

    I own a black 2019 master of torque model for over 3 months and I love everything about it! At low RPMs, it behaves like a kitten and at high it's like a beast. On this bike, you just measure fun per mile nothing else. It's my first bike so I really think it's the best beginner bike out there...I am sure I will keep it for some time! Cons? Maybe that sometimes I get a blank shift indicator(somehow it gets stuck in some gear... and vibrations around 4-5k rpm, but I guess they are normal for inline 2 engines? Right?

    With that in mind, i'd suspect its a general issue with all mid range, mid sized yamahas?

    Honestly, I don't know why your even review this bike, having owned it already. I bought the 2019 in that color. Honestly the color is great. The instrument cluster is good. It just shouldn't be that low and forward. Why Yamaha puts the key up front, to me, is stupid. I'd have rather had the older version with soft suspension because, believe me, this ain't a comfy highway/commuter. It is a stellar urban assault vehicle though. But I have a better one. And I'm not talking about the 2011 Ninja 1000 I did an even trade for my MT-07 with 11,500 miles on it in one year. Never had an issue with the MT-07. The bike is like a frog that wants to jump all day. My 1986 SRX600 is my urban assault vehicle. Smooth, predictable, and 287lbs wet.
    Good review though. It is easy to get it out of shape as you said. I think more people want the MT-09 because it's way more power.

    I have my MT 07 2019 en route as I am typing this comment. Although I'm more into supersports the smaller width of the handlebars on the MT and the riding position make it a better city-bike. Just a quick question man: I too noticed the weakness of the brakes. But did you have the chance to test the ABS? if yes how responsive is it?

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Před 5 lety +3

      For me the ABS is far too aggressive on this bike. When it cuts in you really feel it and it basically reduces the effectiveness of the brakes. That's in essence how ABS works but to me it gets in the way quite a bit on this bike but then I've spent more years riding without ABS than I have with it.

      If you want a bike that's easy to live with, feels smoother, and riders smoother, get the z400. The engine requires a bit of input to get going. It's feels sluggish if you're just looking for that punch and you'll notice it getting slightly annoying around the city/town when you'll be having to hold the revs high just to be able to bust a move. The annoying part will the the unnecessary sound and effortsome throttle input. Thankfully, the gear ratios feel long and don't require frequent shifting.
      But the bike feels smooth, no noticeable vibes, strongly built. The braking, although adequate for the bike, feels softer when compared to the 390. Also the ABS is a lot more intrusive on it and kicks in annoyingly sooner which makes enthusiastic riding on it kind of a gamble. It just feels kind of "not there yet" if you really wanna play hard.
      Okay now for the 390.
      Just get this if you don't ever wanna stop having fun.
      This bike is fun all day long, any day. I keep telling all my friends that torque is where the fun is at if you really wanna play that hard. This bike is such a hoot to ride anywhere you take it. The torque kicks in alot more earlier which makes riding in the city a bliss. The early torque is just a sucker punch in the face out on the curves and while enthusiastic riding. It could feel like a bit too much for a novice, as opposed to the z400, which is a bit more friendly in that aspect. This bike is just so eager and it can be seen in it's DNA. It's purposely built to handle enthusiastic riding. It's got a slightly bigger front disc rotor with steel braided brake lines and sintered brake pads and boy does that make a difference in braking. It drops a really sure footed anchor when and where you want it to. The ABS unit is beautifully programmed and doesn't feel intrusive at all, even under really hard braking. The engine feels slightly vibey at lower rev ranges but smoothens out surprisingly as the revs climb. You might feel the need to shift gears alot more frequently because if you're not in the right gear, the engine begins coughing violently. The bike is really strongly and well built quality wise, but KTMs have a questionable reputation in terms of frequent valve blow ups. (The ones sold here are surprisingly doing well so far, not so much in the American market though). I feel like it's much more convenient being a single, and since all the ones sold around me are doing pretty good so far without any issues. The Kawi comparatively, will run without any hiccups for life. The 390 has a gorgeous instrument cluster, arguably the best in class, even upto some middleweight segment bikes, with tonnes of info on display and even lets you connect to your phone, take or reject phonecalls and change music tracks, which is super fun!
      All in all, if you really want a bike that you can depend on any time, and if you know that you don't plan on riding really hard, get the Kawi. Not to say that its not fun, it's okay but it definitely feels shy of the KTM. But if you know for sure that you're gonna be a street Rossi, and and want the more fun bike, get the 390. And it's not uncomfortable by any means. They're both comparable in terms of riding comfort. Not to say that the KTM is a bad quality machine or has issues, which it doesn't, but it's definitely not up to the quality levels of the Kawi.
      How do I have a confident say in this? Well, I own the 390 myself and my brother owns the z400.
      Have fun, on either one of them! :)
      Edit: Forgot to mention that the KTM has a stiffer suspension setup, especially in the front and feels quite jumpy on bumps but it helps to keep it really sharp and planted on any corner, if its not a bumpy corner. The rear feels adequately sprung for my weight. The Kawi on the other hand is very adequately sprung for everyday riding, it is slightly softer in the front than the KTM. Its feels better on the bumps compared to the KTM. It also stays very true in a corner. You won't feel it giving out unless you're trailbraking or entering a corner really hot.
      Cheers!
      Also edit 2: Try to get a test ride on both of them and you'll know for sure.
      Good luck to you!

      I don't really know if the bike you tested had lowered front forks but the seats are pretty horizontal, without any apparent slant. This is also a very bad thing for the pillion since it takes a lot of effort from your bum muscles to be able to stay planted on that bike. It just feels like you could slide off of it any moment.

    yes, the new model still has corrosion issues; they only updated the suspension components, the seat and the styling (*actually i see you covered that)
    i don't understand how you can say the throttle response is ok from a cable throttle though; you open it and it goes
    that said i agree with you on the other points. power output plummets after 9000 rpm, best point to shift is probably no higher than 9500. suspension is soft, dive is pretty bad and it produces some unnerving wobbles every now and then. i'm upgrading my suspension soon-ish so i hope to have a valid opinion on how it changes the bike. i'm also changing to bridgestone s22 tyres soon; on the racetrack i found the front-end grip in particular, lacking, which severely hampered my corner exit speed. brakes could definitely be better, but it's far from the worst i think lol

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  Před 5 lety +1

      It's just a feeling I had from the throttle. Some bikes you feel like it's more direct and on this one, it almost felt like the cable was just a little bit slack but on my 2016 it was the same. One of those things that's hard to quantify but how it felt to me. I'm sure with better suspension this thing would be such a brilliant all round bike. I'd love to see an MT07 SP.
