There is one microwave trick I learned the hard way: Don't microwave concentrated acids, unless you like your eyes and lungs burned. Or do it in a fume hood. The plus side is that it dissolves many things you wouldn't expect to dissolve normally. Minus side is that the microwave won't last very long.
Yeap, I tend to learn safety lessons through experience too :) luckily still in one piece!
Btw I think if you avoid putting things directly in the centre of the microwave you will avoid any hot or cold spots from cheaper microwaves, on the edge of the turtable plate it will actuallly move around the microwave and move through the waves as it rotates
