  • Two Ukrainian Pilots, who qualified on the MiG-29 and the Su-27, flew the F-16 Fighting Falcon for the first time. The US Air Force gave them a brief familiarization and then tested on a flight simulator, performing "9 simulator events spanning a total of 11.5 hours."
The event produced an assessment that shocked the leaders of NATO Countries.

You can beat that these two pilots were the best of the best that the Ukraine had to send. Bravo for successfully executing a SFO landing, but there's a whole lot more to flying an F-16 against a SU-35. The F-16, with the right pilot is an awesome weapon, but it will take more than a couple of squadrons to change the tide of the war (as Russia will continue to launch weapons from stand-off ranges within the safety of their borders).

It's easy to learn how to fly an airplane, drive a tank or operate military equipment. It's another thing to maintain, trouble shoot and repair. Most every adult knows how to drive a vehicle, how many know how to fix their vehicle when it breaks down? Also, like the Abrams tanks. The United States uses a different fuel than Soviet equipment. The logistics involved to fuel, parts and the right personal to maintain these equipment takes time. It takes at least a year to learn how to repair engines, airframes, electronics, avionics, maintenance management. This is just intermediate level. Then there is Depot level. You need CDI training which takes the minimum two years, QA another two years. Pilots don't know how to repair airplanes, they just fly. So now Ukraine needs to hire contractors with CDI and QA qualifications. Engine CDI/QA, electronic CDI/QA, avionics CDI/QA, ordinance CDI/QA....the list goes on. To support 12 aircraft requires at least 100 ground personal. This is not like playing Call of Duty.

There is another underlying reason the Ukrainian pilots were so able to adapt to the F-16. While American pilots see flying as their "Dream Come True" career, Ukrainian pilots, while loving flying just as American pilots, see learning and adapting to Western Fighter jets as a major contribution to the survival of their families & country from the destructive invasion of their "Bully" neighbor to the East. Remember, there is no greater motivator than that of SURVIVAL.

@@510Redneck Being able to fly one aircraft doesn't automatically mean you can fly another. Fighter jet cockpits are complicated and the philosophy behind Soviet era/Russian control layouts is very different from Western. The aircraft these pilots are used to use mostly single function controls and lots of them, which entails the pilot focusing attention on the controls. The Western philosophy is to have multiple functions assigned to controls and to supply salient info to the pilot through head-up displays. The Western pilot needs to learn the way controls are used in different contexts, but once that is mastered he/she can focus their attention on the combat space.
It is hardly trivial to convert the cockpit language. Maybe if the software was initially designed to switch languages it would be OK, but I should imagine it would take a lot of testing to make the conversion on an F-16.
Low flying aircraft are not that easy to bring down with MANPADS. They pass by quickly and you would need a very high density of missiles on the ground. Although Aircraft will be lost, the ability to launch airstrikes with stand-off munitions or otherwise and target distant enemy aircraft is invaluable.

I keep hearing that the Ukrainian soldiers are very smart and eager to learn and that they are fast learners. I've heard this multiple times from good sources. Also I've heard about some American pilots flying Russian fighters and saying they are harder to fly. They were not talking about complexity, just that they were not all that stable and easy to control. They can be flown very well but it takes some skill. Planes that are very aerobatic tend to be pretty unstable anyway.
I won't be surprised if they end up developing their own hybrid system of fighting that is maybe mostly NATO with some Soviet stuff thrown in. Once they have the NATO training and tactics and equipment they will still have all of their original knowledge. By learning our NATO system and still knowing the Russian tactics really well that will help them to defeat the orcs.

It's easy to learn how to fly. Ask these two pilots if they can change out an engine? Change oil/hydraulic fluid? Change a tire? Repair the radar? Oh yes electronics/avionics/ejection seat/fueling/load ordinance/troubleshooting.....you need to train ground personal which takes years to learn to become a CDI, even more years to be QA. Also you need different fuel logistics.

I am not a military. My training is in Public Health and Infectious Diseases from where I retired in 2016 from the CDC and DHS. But I want to say something about this training. I as a Public Servant, was given the task to maintain the Prevention of Respiratory diseases in the region I was assigned. While doing that, I was always planning Contingency plans in case something unexpected or out of the common occurrence could happen. In that way, we were able to face challenges more effectively and control them. I don't see that kind of approach with the Government Officials in charge of the Military Operations here, and because of that, they appear to be totally unprepared of adjusting Military Operations accordingly. They appear to be lagging behind their Military counterparts, so these Officials give an inaccurate assessment of the capabilities of personnel assigned to them. I say that because in this world where there are so many software and electronic games around the world, and the Ukrainians having lots of high quality players, how come someone is going to say Ukrainians would not be capable of learning Western tactics, when they are able to master these games that are mostly Western creations? That is kind of stupid. And I know that because I trained some Ukrainian Techs in advanced molecular TB testing with Western designed and made machines, and they were able to perform all given tasks from A to Z in a matter of days, not weeks!!!! Ukrainians are very Smart and Capable people, and not giving them the opportunity of proving themselves is a dis-service to Ukraine, specially now that they are fighting a War for their survival as a Nation. I really feel ashamed with my government that having all these capabilities, had given Ukraine help at the speed of a sleeping snail.

The conclusion is simple, the F-16 Ukrainians will not be given, because a modern aircraft is a very difficult thing, and it takes 4 years to study for it. The F-16, though old, is quite a plane, it's a pity for its Ukrainians to scrap...

I am not surprised that these pilots could do this well this quickly. Lets all remember that they're not learning to fly, they are already very good fighter pilots. They simply have to learn the various systems of the f-16 and aircraft's capabilities and limits. I don't think the pilot training would be a problem. I think the main problem is that since the systems on the f-16 are so more complex than many of the systems on the aircraft that they normally fly that training the ground crews to maintain the f-16 would be the bigger problem and i would imagine would take much longer than four months. Considering the speed at which ukrainian people have learned to operate and maintain other systems that have been sent to ukraine i wouldn't bet against the ground crews learning to maintain these jets much faster than would be expected either. You tend to learn a lot quicker when your lives and the lives of your friends and family literally depend on it.

Logistics and base support (inspections, repairs, replacement) are much heavier and probably more customized (given the massive US system) and more different than anything the Ukrainians had before. The range of pods and munitions involved alone could be substantive.
For pilots, it isn't just 'can you do X skill', it is how much of that has you internalized to the point of having it almost in muscle memory (or mental muscle memory if you will) so that you can stay focused on what you must without having to devote cognitive processing to language translations, on which menu tree you had to work down to, and what the 4 different options mean specifically.
There's also the fact that NATO brings to the table AWACS, drones, satellites, and many more things and that communications and sensors that may or may not go to Ukraine but that leads to an aircraft operations being different and more effective - pair or flight tactics, squadron or wing strategies, coordination, complex strike missions, SEAD missions, recon missions, or air superiority missions involve the coordination between flights and squadrons to match the sorts of efficacy the US can deliver.
Still, if you don't own your skies, you are going to keep getting pounded. More air defense missile systems, more sensors, and then when the time is right, direct strikes on Russian staging places - fuel depots, railheads, key road junctions, and air defenses and air bases being used ty the Russians (maybe with help with Russian partisans or somebody's SF spotters...).
If there are Ukrainian relief agencies in your area, help out if you can. The citizens of Ukraine did not deserve the devastation of their country and the hardship and death they are facing. If you can help even a bit, it is appreciated.

Ukrainians speak English better than Russians, and even after graduating from school, knowledge of English is enough for simple communication.
I believe that the reason for the delay in providing Ukraine with these aircraft is mainly logistics and equipment for military airports. Although, in my opinion, it is possible to make sorties from the territory of Poland if there is a great need, which will be within the current month.

It also helps that the F-16 is the same generation fighter craft as the MIG-29 and SU-27 so the Ukrainian pilots don't have to learn the new tech that fighters, like the F-35 has. Jets are moved far away and goes to Engel's only to get the rockets before the attacks. Also, F-16 were already used in Ukraine during some military training several years ago - so it's nothing impossible to have a landing for refuelling or loading of the rockets. When the most complex service works can be done in Poland. That also will protect the equipment and technical personnel from the Russian rocket attacs.
