Lyrics
When I'm all alone on my own by my lonesome
And there ain’t a single ‘nother soul around
I wanna dig into my guitar bend a blues riff that hangs
Over everything
When I'm by myself and it’s daytime cuz down-under
Or wherever it is I live when it's evening
You know I speed-read the morning news and come up with my own little song also
...too
When I step outside to a beautiful morning
Where the trees are all waggin’, my hair-flag waving
The scenery ragin’, my life/love cascading, and the smog hangs
Over everything
When I'm outside in a real good mood
You could almost forget bout all the other things
Like a big old ominous cloud in my periphery
Don’t wanna talk about it
Simultaneous I shout it
When I was young I liked to hear music blarin'
And I wasnt carin to neuter my jams with earplugs
But these days I inhabitate a high-pitched ring over things
So these days I plug em up
When I'm strugglin with my songs I do the same thing too
And then I crunch em up in headphones, cause why wouldnt you?
You could say I hear you on several levels at high decibels
Over everything
When I'm all alone on my own by myself
And there and another single one around I wanna dig into my guitar, bend a blues riff that hangs...
Over everything
Courtney just looks like the type of human being that makes the world a little bit better
Kurt looks like a douchebag
try not looking, not seeing
have you ever imagined not seeing? Just listening to music?
Want to try? No visuals, only AUDIO? It is KILLER! enjoy
well... I have, yeah... it was just a remark that'd occurred to me about the artist
Wearing 7 Bells says the guy commenting on a video..
so funny Gilda forgot to laugh kinda funny
sometimes I can not see but I can hear, sometimes... some of us are not what we once were.
I've been coming back to this song for years now... Just absolutely everything about it, song, video... perfection. So much poetry in there. Intention. It's lovely.
Me too

I love how Kurt and Courtney play this stream-of-consciousness-slacker-sound and scoop up this blasting epic finale!
Yes! It rips!
I see lots of comments on how great this music is (correct!) but I want to give props to the visual pleasure, the concept, the beauty of the video as well.
No doubt, the video is a work of art, beautiful.
Yeah def Sherwin Akbarzadeh and Doug Durant knocked it out of the park they work great together
Yes, The best art of our time.
Absolutely correct.
Spans out with every frame.
a true lesson in Indy rock..kinda country, tasteful, intelligent lyrics, free form vibes, light flourishes of jangling over driven guitars..what's not to love.
Love me some jangling driven guitars-
Courtney and Kurt could sing about making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and it would still be solid gold.
Well, she actually did a song about Instant Noodles
This makes me happy and a little hungry.
She sings about Veggie mite and peanut butter sandwiches in separate songs (maybe even the same song!) I believe. So close enough
I just made the Courtney and Kurt connection, hope this one doesn't have a tragic ending
Eric Quitugua I'm pretty sure every one of her songs is about making a sandwich.
lost pretty much everything in the virgin islands during irma. a friend sent me to israel for 7 weeks and walking around the desert near the dead sea i ran across this song. it changed everything. it was the moment..."i got this." thanks, Kurt and Courtney. you guys are the shit., and you cats have a new fan that will probably hang around for every new song. cheers
Beautiful

“When I’m outside in a real good mood, you can almost forget ‘bout all the other things, like a big ol’ ominous cloud in my periphery..”
God, what a line.
It's a great one
I broke the '420' likes.... It was a hard choice
... But I'm proud of my decision.
So genius.
My life just improved by watching this video
Yes!
My wife just improved if you know what I mean.
I am sorry to hear that you were feeling so low
And my hair!
Jay this guy gets it
Courtney Barnett has some amazing lyrics, I'm so glad she is getting the recognition she deserves and her music is getting radio play. Kurt Vile and Courtney working together is really a dream pairing! I was first introduced to Courtney's music through my music producer friend. I wanna throw him some love for introducing me to some amazing music, he's just released a new single, try searching Lonely Gimmick - All Along the Watch Tower, he has this amazing female singer on it and it gives me a bit of Courtney Barnett vibes, i think they are really talented and deserve more recognition, he did it all himself on his laptop
Yeah I checked out your Watchtower recommendation and it was pretty freakin' awesome. True story, I went to a Kurt Vile concert a few years ago and a girl in the audience standing next to me jumped up on stage to join Kurt. Yep, it was Courtney Barnett!
Kurt's facial expressions crack me up.
Lauren Elizabeth yeah its great
At cretin times in the begging I think Kurt and Courtney are trying to act like one another and thats why Courtney is being mundane and Kurt is being supper happy and peppy .
me too!! it's like he's trying to channel Courtney's singing smiley face! So funny!
He looks a bit like Dave Mustaine
Just the best record I've heard in years!!!
I was in jail for a brief period this song immediately relieved me of depression that’s definitely a powerful song and anxiety and when I first heard this in radio I was writing as many words down as I could so I could listen to it when I got out. Bravo
Wow that's very cool story that you share with us,thanks dude 🌹🙂
having a shitty day, this cheered me up unexpectedly.
May the rest of your day be awesome!
Dude I feel you so much. Now I get to come back to this and remind myself that music truly can be "over everything".

The Australian Invasion has begun, Tame Impala, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Courtney Barnett, Pond, Tal Wilkenfeld, I swear a rock and roll boom is right around the corner, these are the sounds of tomorrow and now.

Paper Kites - the best!
Psychedelic Lizard i love those Australian bands
And Tash Sultana.
Psychedelic Lizard crossing my fingers.
I'm a 78 year old relic from the Little Richard era. I've followed music through the ages and I have to say that Courtney Barnett is the first musician to REALLY impress me for quite a while. Other loves are Shirley Manson (Garbage) and Caro Emerald. So you see, I have good taste. Kurt's brilliant too.
Awesome.
respect
I'd never heard of Caro Emerald, thank you for that recommendation! Really great music.
I agree, by the way Ive seen Little Richard and Chuck Berry on stage together in 1981
Best collaboration ever!
The music world finally got a Kurt and Courtney again!
yeeessss
best musical collaboration will always be Robert Plant and Alison Krauss but this is also awesome
The music world never needed a Kurt and Courtney, other than this one. Just a Kurt would have been totally fine.
MarbGuitar the new Kurt looks like the school bus driver in the Simpsons

Like Semolina n' Pilchards?
OK. Not like Semolina and pilchards. More sardines and porridge! Climbing up the CourtVile tower.
Goes together like me and yo mamma
their friendship is so pure. i love those little inflections and faces they make when they're lip-syncing each others' parts. it's clear they know each other well and love to goof on each other
I love how the camera progressively backs up from Kurt and Courtney and it becomes more about everything around them
Joseph Felix I admired the same thing!
Joseph Felix yeah effective
Great observation. Thank§!
Kurt and Courtney maaaan, whoa
Wonderful cinematography ♡
No matter what is happening around me, this song always finds a way to make me feel like any problem which is happening right now could be gone at any time soon. So I feel like taking life not too seriously, just relax with the music and art you love, fuck everything else.
agree exactly
This song is pure genius. I love Kurt, and Courtney really compliments him in the best way. It feels like a classic.
Yep,totally true !!! ^^
They don't even have to try to sound this cool, they just do
A perfect duo. These two are a musical match. And the frame composition as well! The mirroring shots. Him in the Philly/PA-area, her in Australia. What a beautiful video.
Randomly stumbled upon this hidden gem...amazing chemistry these two, awesome video as well...

Does anyone else think Courtney is adorable?
Pacquette Lauss extremely
I LOVE her
Yes, indeed, she looks quite cute. Am I the only one who feels a bit reminded of Maggie Gyllenhal by looking at her..?
yes
kurt, love him, but not so much
I bought Kurt's Wakin on a pretty daze which I really liked, then just recently I got into Courtney's stuff - and then I found they've done this album together and it's some kind of woozy heaven.
Yesh!
this is like that song from juno and neil young had a baby i love it
Phil Matarese haha that's a good way to describe it
the moldy peaches anyone else but you? That is one of the best movie soundtracks ever made and is completely flawless.
It's like Courtney had a baby with The War on Drugs, which is pretty much my dream baby.
Avery Jacobson yeah I'm still listening to soundtrack on a regular basis
Phil Matarese it's from the Moldy Peaches. It was out way before the movie Juno.
This video reminds me of why I love fall, everywhere just looks and feels sort of chilly
I'm honored to be one of almost 7 million people who gets to hear this! Thank you!!!!!
I love music and I lost my dad last yr and had no desire to listen to music after and later on I avoided it because it would make me too emotional and I couldn't control it.. this is the first 'new song' I listened to and it really just described my emotion I don't play an instrument or anything but just blaring music and ignoring life I guess because music makes me feel better/experience something that is really unique and special and at the time I was over everything. Love this song so much awesome collaboration.
This is really great, these two are kindred spirits. Also love the locations they picked for the video.
Also, I'd expect nothing less than a six minute song from these two ;)
And it's still not too long cause I keep looping it back!
Telecaster + Jaguar = Nice marriage ever

What fantastic chemistry. A joy to behold.
it really is, btw if you like Kurt Vile you should check out Lonely Gimmick - All Along the Watchtower, it gives me Kurt vibes and it's a great take on a classic song
this song came on this french radio station my art teacher plays in the background of class the other day and it reminded me of this song and this video and honestly its just superb. I love that I see my life in courtney's backgrounds and I love reading that philly people see their lives in kurt's backgrounds. and just like the shots are beautifully composed and i love black and white at the moment and the lil aboriginal flag on courtney's guitar I am Obsessed
YEEESSSS!!!
This is so freaking cool
What an absolutely wonderful concept! Brilliantly shot and composed. So simple and effective. (I'm sure it was tough for the editor to resist the urge to put digital pushes on the chorus shots to add energy, but I'm glad they did. I like the simplicity) Kudos to Director and DP's (and everyone else who worked on this)! (Also Kurt and Courtney made a great song!)
Curious what's a digital push?
It's when instead of moving a camera or zooming in on the lens while you're filming, you add a digital zoom later. Instead of the zoom happening in physical space, it simply pushes into the existing footage. A lot of music videos use this technique because they lack the time/budget to do these moves on set, or they feel they need a little extra pizazz while they're editing.
Ahhh okay! I thought that might be it, and yeah I can certainly think of places where I've seen this. The stationary images here are so much better though, especially as they keep getting further from the camera.
hey do you ( or does anyone ) know the words to Life Like This? If you do can you please share them here? I can't figure them all out but love the song soooo much! THX!
Beautiful visuals, wonderful chord structures, seemingly honest lyrics. What we have here is a couple dorks and a few friends and a nice place to be. And I mean dorks in the nicest way.
Another type of Kurt and Courtney ! 🤗

The guitars in this track represent everything I adore about the instrument.
I just love the tone of the guitars - To me just the sound of the guitars above all is what pulls me in and makes it so good.

Thanks for this, was looking for the lyrics while listening to the song. There were a few words I couldn't make out. Love this song
Thanks!!!!
thank you for putting the lyrics up ~
Thanks a lot!
Just perfect. Beautiful.
@4:25, I know that restaurant Kurt Vile is standing in front of. It's the Pine Crest Restaurant on the Black Horse Pike in Folsom, NJ. I've driven past it loads of times. It used to be known as a very good place to eat some years ago, but that chef moved on. Since Kurt is from the Philly area it's not that surprising he may have seen this place on his way to the South Jersey shore area. Also @3:54 he's playing in front of the pond by the motel that sits next to the restaurant.
@1:37 looks like one of the many bridges crossing the Schuylkill River in Philly. @3:05 he's on the Ben Franklin Bridge. And I'm pretty sure @4:41 he's playing in front of an old abandoned shopping center on the White Horse Pike in Clementon.
Pretty cool to see landmarks you actually know that are local to you in a video.
Mike Guinness Good lookin out
He's also playing on the Jersey side of the Ben Franklin bridge headed into Philly.
@2:08 looks like Fishtown (neighborhood in Philly), possibly the Norris/Susquehanna/Cedar intersection where Reanimator Coffee is.
!thanks
I frickin knew it.😁 I just posted that the shot of the abandoned strip mall looks like Bayvile NJ. Now I really wonder.
Song of the year, has to be. Amazing
Ah-Mazing-ING! So glad you enjoyed hell out this, too!
Song of the decade for my money
Agree totally
When they sing in harmony on that third verse, well, that's just magic. Damn.
entire vid sounding magical loving this every damned note singing harmony & melody this is so HARD to Ignore!
Some ideas sound better on paper. This one will sound better on vinyl.
True. Still sounds great tho.
cool!
I had a good laugh
Vinyl doesn't sound better and am continually confused why people think it does...it may make you feel better holding it in your hand, owning it, looking at it...but that's about it.
C.H. Smith like Jimi Hendrix said "you know it goes a little deeper than that" holding it in your hand isn't all bad, but sticking the needle in that groove and experiencing that silky smooth vibrating friction is just so sensual...
The photography on this video is so fucking amazing! Btw, perfect match this two
Katherine León cinematography*
Theresa Dawson thanks, I don't know anything about videos :(
It's beautiful. Whoever scouted the locations deserves credit too.
I agree - the music is magic - but wow, visually it is so stunning as well. I don't think "photography" is off the mark. That's what it felt like watching this - like an art gallery photo of the most imaginative and finest quality come to life. I've never seen anything like it - the way the background is so golden and vivid, except in art quality black and white photos/stills. There is not a lot of "cinematographic" action - it is more like composed portraits, but with these genius subjects alive within the portrait singing. Like someone else said - it makes your life better for having watched it.
Excellent comment. Your second language? Impressive. Most English speakers have poorer command of the tongue. But I agree, this video is beautiful. And as a bonus, no tits, bikinis, or arses to be seen. Life affirming... :-)
barnett makes music that sounds like how I want to feel in life, this song and album is phenomenal
I SWEAR EVER SINCE I CAME ACROSS THIS SONG I'VE BEEN PLAYING ALL THE TIME. JUST MAKES ME HAPPY

Exactly. Same. Perfection.
this song is great. it makes me sad though. i wish i had talent. better yet, i wish i had worked had to cultivate some sort of skill.i i also wish i didn't sound like dying animals when i sing.
You're damn good at something, I'm sure!
i feel you...
Dying animals sound amazing!
Sing Mister. You don't know what it sounds like to every ear. Animals, dead or living, are pretty much my audience. Once in a great while a human happens by when my soul is in my voice. I didn't recognize that pitch for 40 years.
patrickJMT nice
I keep coming back to this - some of the most beautiful photography I've ever seen in a music video

Another one of my favorite albums of 2017. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile play wonderfully as a duo. Wrap your ears around the wandering vibes of this record.
Cool song! Love the video and each other singing their counterparts. Great cinematography and background locations. Love how they are wearing dark and light clothing, and their contrasting backgrounds, and that the black and white film ties everything together.
Addictive song and sweet video! Love Kurt... and now love Courtney, too. Warms my heart.
