LYRICS
Oliver Paul, twenty years old, thick head of hair worries he’s going bald. Wakes up at a quarter past nine, fare evades his way down the 96 tram line. Breakfast on the run again, he’s well aware he’s dropping soy linseed Vegemite crumbs everywhere.
Feeling sick at the sight of his computer he dodges his way through the Swanston commuters. Rips off his tie, hands it to a homeless man, sleeping in the corner of a Metro bus stand. He screams “I’m not going to work today! Gonna count the minutes that the trains run late. Sit on the grass building pyramids out of Coke cans.”
Headphone wielding to the Nicholas Building, he trips on a pothole that’s not been filled in. He waits for an elevator, 1 to 9, a lady walks in and waits by his side. Her heels are high and her bag is snakeskin. Hair pulled so tight you can see her skeleton. Vickers perfume on her breath, a tortoise-shell necklace between her breasts. She looks him up and down with a Botox frown, he’s well used to that look by now.
The elevator dings, and they awkwardly step in, their fingers touch on the rooftop button…
“Don’t jump little boy, don’t jump off that roof, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you you’re still in your youth, I’d give anything to have skin like you!”
He said, “I think you’re projecting, the way that you’re feeling, I’m not suicidal just idling insignificantly. I come up here, for perception and clarity, I like to imagine I’m playing Sim City. All the people look like ants from up here, and the wind’s the only traffic you can hear” He said, “All I ever wanted to be was an Elevator Operator can you help me please?!”
“Don’t jump little boy, don’t jump off that roof, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you you’re still in your youth, I’d give anything to have skin like you!” - Hudba
Shes so elegantly awkward. Love love love
Described in some write-ups as a tomboy, which seems pretty accurate. Very charming.
+Ewan MacColl why bring up sexuality?
How is Courtney Barnett not more famous? She's incredible.
Well, she is getting there. Appearances on American TV shows "Austin City Limits", "Late Show With Stephen Colbert", and "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" have helped!
I bought the t shirt. People have asked wtf is that. I explain rock chick new album
Talent is unpredictable, cant put it up in a can.. eh
Get her on Joe Rogan's podcast
Because America prefers shitty artists like Cardi B.
This is actually one of the best written songs I’ve ever heard.
Imagine only just hearing about Courtney Barnett, listening to a random song, loving it, seeing there's a music video, clicking on it and immediately seeing your favourite band Sleater Kinney. Thats when you know your gonna vibe with this music :)
Based
And stumbling upon a random comment and discovering Sleater Kinney
Her lyrics always make my brain tingle 😌
The cameos from all of the legendary Aussie artists is amazing!
Courtney is a total legend. The amount of thought that goes into her songwriting in unsurpassed. Soon she might even be able to afford to replace the 'Sharpie held on with a rubber band' capo?!
all while sounding so incredibly effortless
I love this so much because I've walked passed that elevator so many times but never in it cos i use the stairs to go to retrostar and muses of mystery and even the sewing shop where the store lady yelled at another lady once and it scared me, and that means i can't dispute that this elevator does in fact lead into all these places and i love that
Wow! What a fantastic homage to Melbourne music and culture! Magda, Tim Rogers, Paul Kelly, Michael Leunig! Brilliant work.
gotta love all those cameos, i saw sleater-kinney and jeff tweedy for sure
i was searching for the comment when i saw Tweedy
Courtney Barnett has some amazing lyrics, I'm so glad she is getting the recognition she deserves and her music is getting radio play. I was first introduced to her music through my music producer friend. I wanna throw him some love for introducing me to some amazing music, he's just released a new single, try searching Lonely Gimmick - All Along the Watch Tower, he has this amazing female singer on it and it gives me a bit of Courtney Barnett vibes, i think they are really talented and deserve more recognition, he did it all himself on his laptop
I sound like a bot commenting below a Facebook scam (you know the "I clicked the link and bought Dyson for 1/10th the the price, this is legit fr fr" with generic rich Karen profile pic and 1 month user history bots) but man am I glad I checked out Lonely Gimmick. Immediately followed them on Spotify after listening to 1 song.
@@cal7447 lol that's actually very nice to know, sorry just seen this reply. youtube doesnt send me all mt reply notifications, im doing somethin right, growin the fan base lilttle by lilttle, they've just dropped an album as well
That strange 30 second stretch where she quietly walks over to the balcony and looks down strikes me in the gut every time I see it. I'm not sure why.
Can't break the 69-
Guaranteed you'd never get me up there.
yes
Because everyone loves the buzz of standing on the edge with the wind in their hair, but then everyone's had intrusive thoughts too
ITS THE SLEATER KINNEY GIRLS IN THE PARK
yes!
This is the first time I've actually watched the video for the song. So excited to see them!
They also appeared in this Sonic Youth video czcams.com/video/AU0IiziwvAA/video.html
And Tweedy
Yes!
after giving it another listen the lyrics are pretty genius
Yes my girl Courney killin it!!! I remember the first time i heard her. I was trying on a shirt in a california shop that was way too expensive when "depreston" came on. Now whenever i hear that song it has such a special feel to it. Love this girl.
The first time I hear this song I became immediately obsessed with it. I have been studying it ever since. I love the hand clapping and that third chord progression change (the rise). It is so cool and the way the rhythm changes is intoxicating.
this song kinda changed my life. I'm extremely suicidal and just having one of your personal idols sing this songs really does it for me.

You sound like an teen trying to be edgy. Try harder next time
@@starvingboyinafrica9463 I didn't know having mental illness is a synonym of trying to be edgy, youtube user Starving Boy In Africa. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us, whatever would we be without you!!!
@@akamisdarth you comment just screens attention seeking that’s all
@@starvingboyinafrica9463 oh my god shut up you're being rude for no reason whatsoever. It's both boring and pathetic. Bye 🥱🥱🥱
like the tweedy cameos
This isn’t about suicide. It’s about someone rejecting society (tearing off his tie) and going to the roof to look down on a crazy society filled with crazy people. He understands elevator operator’s job is a humble job. They understand life’s ups and downs. The person who sees the boy on the roof thinks the boy is on the edge literally and metaphorically, and is going to jump, but that’s just a rash conclusion based on stereotypes. I am an English teacher and I know and.... I’m in love with Courtney.
Saw her at Longitude in Dublin at the weekend and she was easily the best thing about the whole weekend. Amazingly talented woman.
Sleater-Kinney and Courtney Barnett!! What an awesome time
No ones gonna bring up Paul Kelly bowling? The legend himself
Uncle tim with the frisbee!
Surly bowler...
too bad he shot smack his entire career...he could've been better
So many appearances by other celebs
@@ozinusa Pharmacological determinism at it again. What if smack is what made him so great?
I love how the stories in the songs are so clear that it would be very easy (and trite!) to make a video clip about them but the videos always tell a completely different story!
As a Melbournian i LOVE this video clip. Great work Barnett and the Nicholas Building
Agreed and as a Melbournian living in Seattle, the Sleater Kinney cameo makes it even more heart warming.
Love the cameo from Sleater-Kinney at the beginning of this amazing video :)
i could not stop smiling through this entire thing! fav Courtney song! i was expecting a literal visualisation from the story in the song but i love this just as much
sleater kinney and courtney barnett? YES PLEASE! great vid!
I like her style.
Courtney is a good singer
me too
yesss
Our style
Why are you everywhere?!
honestly the jeff tweedy cameo made me fan girl over two of my favorites being friends
*_AH_* i discovered Sleater-Kinney half an hour ago and i can't believe that i just recognized them now after rewatching this video! omgg
Sleater-Kinney rock, and they dig Courtney.
+freaktab11 ever since that comment i've seen different videos of them and boy do they rock indeed! :D
I love this music. All hail to queen Courtney!
I saw her live yesterday, she is just amazing!
I was that little "boy" on the 96 working top of the amp building years ago. This vid is in my imaginary rage playlist :p classic.
love the sleater kinney, jen cloher, and camp cope cameos!
That pause on the roof was so perfect that I actually got emotional.
I love it.
I got a very simple message out of the ending bit there. "Don't off yourself, play some music instead!" And I love that message.
I'm so happy every time I see the Tweedy
Wow! Wow! Wow! Sleater Kinney opening for Courtney Barnett...
ive actually seen magda wait for an elevator when she was going on the set of the project. totally waved to her. this gave me flash back
Courtney really can't do anything wrong, can she? Delightful, as always.
This song, video production, EVERYTHING is incredible. I am in love with her.
I love the Sleater Kinney cameo in the beginning.
(listen to the song) : this rocks
(read the lyrics carefully) : omfg a goddamn masterpiece
Well Done Miss Courtney... Love the song and Sleater-Kinney ladies are an amazing touch.
Well played!!
As if I couldn't love her any more she comes out with a sweet new vid with an SK cameo 😍😍😍
Never saw this before, It's amazing! I love it. Why isn't Courtney Barnett more famous? Good question. Can we change that?
I always think about "Jumpers" by Sleater-Kinney when I listen to this song so seeing them in the video was pretty weird but very cool.
Possibly the best song ever recorded.
I first saw her on SNL, and I kinda liked the music, but I couldn't quite figure out why. Then I click on this video and the first thing I see is Sleater-Kinney. Now I know what she reminds me of.
Courtney Barnett as an elevator operator clapping in the elevator with nuns is my spirit animal.
I just came across this old comment and I realize how this could possibly be offensive to some people. What I meant was that particular scene resonated with me on a deeper level. I used the term “spirit animal” without recognizing its nuanced implications, and I apologize. I could have phrased that better.
I tried to get on the roof of the Nicolas Building after seeing this but it's closed to the public? Damn.
Pure joy! Love it.
Yes! Been listening to the song forever, and now a great video for it!
Her videos are always fun to watch
You know you’re cool if you get Sleater-Kinney in your video. They also appear in Sonic Youth’s Nevermind (What was it Anyway)
One of my favorites!
Best organ ever
I loved seeing Sleater Kinney and Jeff and Spencer Tweedy! Adorable video.
Yes!
literally the nicholas building. nice video.
Just add this video to the long list of brilliance this fine album has achieved, CB3, your rockin it!!!!
So so awesome
GOD I LOVE THIS
I love this song!!
I will never stop loving this video
I love this song!
Got a vibe like Sheryl Crow's "All I wanna do", except in ocker Strine.
Awesome song.
Love the cameos by Magda, Paul Kelly and Michael Luenig. They all wanna get on Courtney's bandwagon.
I thought Sheryl Crow too,
ISn't that Tim Rogers on the beach too?
this song keeps me alive
so great!!
Such a great voice she has, no doubt!
00:11 sleater kinney!!
Screamed!
Rock Videos Jeff Tweedy of Wilco is in this as well.
Simply fantastic......!!! Well in
the drones!
Amo a Courtney .
Saludos desde Perú...
Breath of fresh air. x
LOVE it. Cameos galore.
All kinds of brilliant
Love this it's in my soul
Perfect song.
The video reminds me of the lift from the ABC show 'Lift-Off', where the doors would open at random spots like St. Kilda beach (sans Tim Rogers!) and people would just get in and out. Love the video and CB3, keep it up and visit LA soon!
A reference we would not get in the U. S. Thanks for getting us hip.
All Australians who grew up in the late 80s and 90s will get this reference - it's a good comparison.
I thought that was Tim!
Brilliant -Courtney is totally excellent
How have I only just clocked Sleater Kinney?...Courtney rules
and the wilco dude? Sweet
Humourous A++
Ahhhhh I'm in love
EPIC
I just saw Timmy Rogers there...bless.
great tune!!!!!!!! love this version
I thank God for You. Love, Light, Peace, Music and Joy
I love her music and vids they are so weird and funny
I'm quite sure she's the most talented of the Deschanel sisters
michyrock1 she is not one of the sister wtf are you talking about
LOL
So hurtful.
@@randyortonsdickbulge It's a joke, forensic. On how she resembles the Deschanel sisters. She definitely looks like she'd be Zooey's little rugged sister.
You got me to giggle. A rare event!
Outstanding.
"im just using bitcoin these days" -Carrie Brownstein
god bless you sleater-kinney
You can say that again
So cooool, can't stop smiling ^^
love you Courtney!
Courtney, man you rock. Love this video and the new song, Tell Me How You Really Feel, I came here to see. I saw you in DC, now I'm in ABQ. Please come to NM. You would sound great at the Santa Fe Opera House. See you soon, fingers crossed. Love!
Amazing! Love the song, the music video and everything else about it
