Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Dec. 8, 2017 | Bob Boilen -- Put your love of perfection outside the office door and come in for some office fun. This collaboration between Philadelphia's Kurt Vile and Melbourne's Courtney Barnett is more about newfound friends poking jabs, goofing around and having fun with words than reaching any new musical heights. It's a much welcome injection of humor in the world of rock music and if you've heard their collaborative album Lotta Sea Lice, you'll find this Tiny Desk performance musically even more casual. It's akin to hearing friends play after a few afternoon beers, which is kind of what happened. (We actually had to page folks in the building hoping for some brew and were quite surprised at what the NPR staff had stashed in the fridge.)
The two singers/songwriters/guitarists have been mutual admirers and kept bumping into one another at various festivals. They find mutual love for twang and so their songs lean country, though their respective countries are hemispheres apart.
Kurt and Courtney tend to bring out the adolescence in one another, inspiring Kurt to pick out a song he wrote when he was roughly fourteen called "Blue Cheese" about, well, I'm not sure. But lines like, "I didn't mean to cough on her/Forgot to add the fabric softener," just make me laugh; and in 2017, in a deeply serious political landscape, I find that quite refreshing.
Set List
"Over Everything"
"Continental Breakfast"
"Blue Cheese"
"Let It Go"

Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile

these two take themselves just the right amount of serious
I love how Courtney smiles and giggles at Kurt's guitar playing haha
This is probably my favorite tiny desk concert. I come back to it when I’m going through hard stuff and it brings me comfort. I just realized that Courtney and Kurt mirror each other when they play like Paul and John 🥰
Oh, wow. They do!
This is so human I love it, they're just playing music having a good time, and even if they make a little mistake they just laugh. I really think the human element is lacking in music today. This is a breath of fresh air.
Probably the most charming Tiny Desk concert I've seen.
goddamn these two idiots together are the cutest thing i've ever seen in my life
"idiots"... fuck you. lol
that's not very nice man.
Lol...
Part of me likes these two...a part of me hates'm ....and I hate that
Goofballs, maybe, but not idiots. I love that they’re genuinely having fun with this.
Complicated lyrics, complex guitars, how do they play and sing at the same time?!?! Amazing musicians ❤️
I think it was perfect. Makes me happy to see music can still be that fun and simple
I’ve lived in Indonesia for about a year or so. There wasn’t a day on which I wouldn’t put my headphones on, hop on my motorbike and just roam towards nowhere listening to Kurt. The scenic route together with Kurt’s voice and lyricism painted some of the most vivid memories I’m happy to have.
Ben Bauer, I love your post! 👍
Very unpredictable yet melodic like a punk spirit infected with nature.
Tristan Lynn good description
I like that
perfect description
YES!!
Good point,well made.
There's a really beautiful thing going on here
Yes, its called having fun with another person. Its a lost art.
I love the whole feel of their project together, and the album is great. Not trying to harmonize much or do too much, just two friends from across the globe, trading verses and having a good time.
As soon as I saw they were making an album together I was like, "YES!!!" Pre-ordered it right away and love every second of it. So glad these two came together to make an album together.
Agreed, it's not polished or anything but I can feel how much fun they're having.
Kevin Brosky Except these melodies are exquisite, it's so musical!
But it’s not good enough when there are real musicians out there who deserve to be k. A stage like this. This took no effort ladies and germs zero, and you still applaud? It’s time to start standing up and saying no, we deserve better on stages like this and it’s out there
@@MrNines-lh1fg like who, you? If that Aretha Franklin cover on your page is you then definitely not. Don't talk shit about talented people if you can't back it up. Basically, you fucking suck.
I love the feel of this. Friends just jamming out to their own tunes. Wait, Are you in tune? Yes. (tunes) OK? It'll have to do. They let us into their friendship for a few minutes.
So much better than over practiced perfection. Embrace the warts.
This comment captivated the feel of this music so well.
Yep. Reminiscent of days passed out in an old barnyard in Lacy, WA back in 1975.
I love these sessions, you can hear those little mistakes every now and then and see the artists smile because of that. It feels like a more intimate session after all.
This is a very important aspect that is very much overlooked. Starting musicians, especially kids, think that mistakes should be avoided - you need to stick to the sheet. The more you start discovering yourself as an artist, you realise that mistakes are beautiful... they take you to places you never thought existed. Mistakes must be embraced, they must be welcomed, forgiven, and accepted. I know there is a video of Yo yo ma (cellist) somewhere on youtube where he welcomes, acknowledges the first mistake he makes in a concert - and then continues playing. That's great philosophy for life right there!
Yesssssss!
Edgard Vasquez totally agree, i'm thinkinh how people enjoyed session there :-) thumbs up!!!
Srikanth S. Absolutely
Yes! Couldn't have said it better myself!!
The chemistry between these two is unbelievable
I don't know how many times I've revisited this video... It's my go-to when I need to work but am feeling anxious. I just put it on the side or in the background. These two are my favorites and can soothe like no other.
Try courtneys prior work .its aewsome
Courtney might as well be the coolest being in the planet
Luis Moldes good thing she's not. The world be a dull place lol
Both of them seem like the most pleasant people in the world
Joao RK definitely. But it doesn't make them the "coolest beings on the planet"
Garrett Carrico that's just what we call hyperbole I think
She's alright but spot of the coolest being on the planet is reserved by Mac DeMarco
Their music reminds me of the Juno soundtrack. I love it, music like this makes me happy. =D
Mandi Boo moldy peaches baby. Never forget ❤️
I'm not sure there is actually any other music like this.
they sound really balanced together, really cute, everything i like to see
this music its like a warm huge full of love
So true!
I'll give you my love
@@HooDRidEWhiteY still got the typo in there 😂
@@plutosgardener2631 the comment I replied to has since been deleted. It was more funny before, trust me. Thanks for the heads up; I'm deleting my comment since it no longer has the intended effect.
I saw "Kurt and Courtney" and got momentarily confused...
Nostra Fn Damus SAME
Don't worry, _this_ Kurt won't be murdered by this _Courtney._
Nostra Fn Damus they both suck about the same...
The same Lol
its funny because she plays a kurt cobain jag too aha
When songs from their collaborative album first started playing on the radio, I turned on my car and heard Kurt singing. My first thought was, "Holy cow! A male Courtney Barnett!" and then she started singing.... I thought it could not make more sense for them to do a duet/collaboration; it's like they were made for each other.
Absolutely
I have the impression this is what two musically talented kids growing up on a desert island would produce on their own music without the influence of classical/traditional musical training: chords, harmonies, rhythm patterns, you name it. There is not a single second of predictability in this and their talent still shines through every single beat. Love it!
Zs
Zsolto66 That's what you think? Really? Desert island music without western influence would sound pretty distant from diatonic chords and 4/4 time.
It's honest..while unexpected and different they are both musicians, u don't just accidentally play these chords in this timing.
this cured my depression for 20 minutes
Try to drinkand run to the sea :)
naama hirsh that sounds fun to be honest but i live in the midwest
@@SybilLusch how much is ticket to Israel?
This both tend to have that effect on all of us, I guess 😌

I think these are good kids.
I like the way they write. Very entertained by the lyrics.
brad h yep, me, too! Life Like This is a great song to listen to from Lotta Sea Lice, lyrics, tune & all
I love them they should make another album
I've only just found this vid, I love it! Nothing wrong with getting to the party late, so long as you get here.
"Kurt shall we rehearse for that Tiny Desk thing?"
"..Nah"
Thought the same
Tight guitar!
painfully slack.
I saw the dude live a few years back, and it was appalling. He was out of tune, sloppy, dull, totally unengaging.
Put me right off.
@@jimsmint and looks like a massive entitled loser
It's like... Grungy. These are the vibes. They aren't puppets. Are these comments ironic?
This was not rehersed at all. Courtney keeps waatching what Kurt is doing. Then, every once in a while she looks into space ang gets a great idea of her own and throws it in there. This is amazing!!!

They have recorded and toured together before.
Mesmerising. Like watching two people travelling on different starships trying to coordinate a joint landing. Love it.
You guys are on fire

And now Courtney & Kurt
Thanks a lot
Gerardo Villegas so good right?!
Wow, NPR. Great moves. Keep it up. Proud of you. - Michelle Obama
Was a dry spell for a while there.
That's what I'm saying
I'm unsubscribing. how? get out of here with that nonsense please
This really is one of my favorite Tiny Desks of all time. Somehow here in Covid 2020 it's an especially perfect attitude to everything.
I think Over Everything is the best song ever done on Tiny Desk.
that desk is actually quite large
Romancandle5929 😂
maybe it's the concert that's tiny, so instead of tiny-desk concert it's a tiny desk-concert
themadcaplaugh you got that the wrong way round, but I dig it
I would tell that desk "Sir, I've seen tiny desks and you are no tiny desk."
@@emmetLshavinski Followed with..." Good day, sir. I said GOOD DAY!!!"

Love both of your writing individually!! This made my day! You two kids are Magic!!
I love these two. So casual and relaxed. Just having a good time. Go away if you are looking for perfection. Stay for the fun.
This is BEAUTIFUL! So happy to have listened to this
this makes me so happy everytime i watch it .. just beautiful
One of my favourite albums from 2017. This is a fantastic collaboration between two very talented musicians who seem to be genuinely enjoying performing and working together. A pleasure to watch and hear.
I love the way you (both), play the guitar, the way you feel it!! And i love your voices!!
Thanks for your existence
This is so great. All of it.
Why this make me so happy, the smiles are so authentic this is beautiful
I keep coming back to this.I love the album but this performance is just so intimate and fun
Great collaboration these two, so easy to listen to, looped, or not
thanks for sharing amazing music with all of us here
NPR how are you able to keep blessing us with such amazing artists!
This album has been playing in my car since Christmas 2017. The hooks and lyrics keep coming into my brain and I like that.
You 2 have no idea how much you make me smile watching this. Thank you
Bought their album instantly after listening to this here. What great chemistry and guitar picking.
The musical styles of these two just flow so well together and it makes me so happy. I immediately fell in love with this project especially since I LOVE Courtney so much
I'm in tears. It has been a great week or so at the Tiny Desk
Tysm NPR
Way to good to be left u listened to. Treasure u both.. beyond joy.. John loved this song Kurt. Hope u know that.
One of the rougher tiny desks, but one I always come back to! Wholesome energy and good tunes.
I ALWAYS FIND THE BEST PERFORMANCES ON HERE. ALWAYS THE BEST SOUND. THANKYOU & GOD BLESS.
After discovering this only a week ago, I've become slightly obsessed with it! What an awesome performance. So much charm and personality. And talent. Shitloads of talent. I've bought Lotta Sea Lice as a result. Thank you Tiny Desk!
Melting a little over these two lovely artists... brings a feeling as if they barely realize they are in front of an audience, and instead feel like light heartedly jam seshing in a little room in a house with good acoustics.
These two together are magic. :) Thanks NPR...and Kurt and Courtney!! :)
i'm watching this everyday, this is so lovely
They are just adorable. Listen to their album Lotta Sea Lice if you haven’t already, great record
They compliment each other so well.
I love Kurts guitar playing, and how they were so in synch.Beautiful
I love how happy they are in this video. They just seem like they had a lot of fun on this album and I honestly love it so much.
Feeling good considering being Covided here in 2020. Thanks for this amazing music to get me through 💘
BEEN WAITING A WHILE FOR THIS ONE!
Three days of great music in a row you guys are killing it
This made me really happy to watch. They work so well together
That moment at 2:30 is so wholesome and tells you all you need to know about the friendship between these two. Love them both dearly! Can't wait to see you at End of The Road festival, Mr Vile!
Bob says this isn't about reaching new music heights, but I might disagree. This is Indie gold. The Barnett/Vile album is Iconic and will be a classic.
Ahh amazing! best collab ever
So nice to know that there's people today making just a simple thing: music. Just love this, and makes me travel. Beautiful!
Must say it: Josh Rogosin, you're a genious! It's unbelieavable this sound you take from this place!
Of course these awesome artists help. Lovely session.
Courtney's voice makes me feel all warm inside.
Like these two a lot separately. LOVE them together!!! An example of the result equaling more than the sum of the individual parts. One of my favorite duos, and altogether acts in modern music.
How much/often can one actually watch this ... its simplicity, awkwardness and stuttered swagger is so endearing!!!! :)
My love for this is endless. Thanks for everything you do, NPR.
YEAHHH
These guys have a similar chemistry to what I saw in a scene in an old rock film that had Janis Joplin and Rick Danko, jamming in a flirtatious manner.
It's sweet. And they sound good too.
I fell asleep watching CZcams one night. When I woke up, this was playing. What an amazing collaboration. Everything about it is just brilliant. So glad I stumbled across it.
What incredible natural, fun and musical chemistry... just remember this is a jam session not a produced performance!! WOW!!!
totally love how courtney laughs or smirks at Kurt's mistakes and Kurt just kindin hides or is embarrassed by them and moves on. Soo cute.
So good... friendly, casual and cool... i really really dig it... makes me happy :9 :)
Perfectly imperfect. This just make me grin. Finally worked out what it reminds me of - Pavement at their very best. I can't think of a higher compliment...
I just love watching Kurt Vile work!!…..What a personality!!….He makes me laugh!!..right out loud!!
i love how casual they are - the whole idea is lime that
"Sounds pretty, Kurt."
"... Yeh."
brilliant...love these guys together..some kinda casual genius
Love it! These two are a match made in heaven
I love how Courtney always looks over to Kurt. And her cute little giggle at 7:32 xD
This is ART at it's finest ❤
Just wonderfulness. To the joy of music and friends and not taking things too seriously.
Man, I love this! Unrefined, raw and freaking awesome.
