      john doe Of course there's good ones. You just hear about the bad ones. I will admit, my parents spend a lot on me at christmas but I don't let it affect me. I don't pester them throughout the year and if I want something I work for money and get it myself. And I'm sure there are a lot more children/teens like this, you just never hear about them because the media shows the bad things that kids do.

  • @PresidentPixel

    Here's my strategy for a good Christmas, get the gifts you asked for, but donate old things you don't use or play with to people who are less fortunate, and of course don't over due it with the presents. Say you get a game console and a few games to go with it that's good enough, no need to exceed to ridiculous amounts.

      oh every kid does this now a days - i'm 24 and know materialistic adults who do this still, even for random shit they buy. that's a huge issue when kids get older, they all post photos of what they got and it's the equivalent to going to school & bragging about it to your peers. parents shouldn't be worried about how another parent spoils their child at christmas, but rather if they tell them how to behave around other kids who may only get one small gift. I wish more adults did this though everyday. Social media has destroyed people's perception of what reality is. i see these "minimalist" looking photos that are supposed to be everyday snapshots, looking like an art director came in and set up a shot. room is extremely clean, nothing out of place, everything perfectly decorated, perfect white duvet and matching bedding, perfect soft but bright lighting, minimalist decor...

    My family usually gives us like either one big gift (like around $200) and smaller ones (like around $10-$15) or a bunch of medium ones ( around $50) and the rest of the year we dont get anything which is why we splurch on christmas.

    For Christmas I got a record player and a Paramore record to play on it. I also got a few other small things, but I was very very grateful and thanked my parents many times. :) My mom, dad, little sister, and I also went out and gave to this organization that gives toys to children and parents who can't really afford them. I know it's been 2 months already, but I hope everyone's holidays were lovely. :)

    i celebrate christmas, but i have thought about WHY we do this holiday every year. Why can't we have family dinners every night or get our kids a thoughtful gift whenever we want to? Why do we have to designate a certain day to spoil our kids? I have decided this year to get my kids just a few things that have a purpose, such as learning toys or crafts. I just cant help but think why we bring a tree into our homes every year and decorate everything and buy all these toys for ONE day. Dont get me wrong i celebrate christmas and do it all but i have been thinking about this alot lately.

    • @Feethehe
      @Feethehe Před 7 lety

      LemonComputer exactly and even if everyone did it for Jesus then why are we spoiling our kids with gifts? The three wise men brought jesus gifts and they had a purpose...but there was no christmas tree, infact the name christmas was originally Christian-ized by the catholics because it was a pagan holiday. The bible does not tell us to celebrate christmas or birthdays for that matter or even Easter.

    • @Feethehe
      @Feethehe Před 7 lety

      I'm sure I am contradicting myself here, but i have been thinking about this and seems silly in a way. If God was in this holiday, the entire world wouldn't be in on it, I assure you. This holiday is a mega money making deal so how could it be about Christ?

    When I was a kid and my family had a bit more money, we were given a limit of 100 dollars each. No more. My mother also heavily pushed us to ask for educational toys and clothes. It sucked a little bit but I at least understand her reasoning. My favorite Christmas toy was my Idog or my stuffed robo bear.

  • @perfectsplit5515
    @perfectsplit5515 Před 10 lety +4

    Parents love their children, so they want them to be happy. To make them happy, they spoil them with material things. Christmas is the perfect "excuse" for this. This tradition is probably more prevalent with parents who are professionally successful. What most parents fail to realize is that spoiling kids only makes them happy in the short-term. That new toy fire engine will only give your son a temporary high. This spoiling tradition also discourages children from building a strong work ethic, where people work to get the things that they want. To succeed in life, people need to build a strong work ethic based on self-discipline and continuous self-improvement. Spoiling goes against this. IMO, mild deprivation can have a positive effect in the long-run because it encourages kids to do what it takes to succeed in life.
    I was spoiled rotten as a kid, with a room full of Transformers and G.I. Joe toys. Now as an adult, I have $40000 in student loans and drive a 14-year old car. I have been laid off 3 times and I failed in 2 careers. I washed out of military officer training.
    My Vietnamese friend in school was dirt poor and exploited by his parents as cheap labor to work in a failing Chinese restaurant. Now as an adult, that Vietnamese immigrant is earning 6 figures in IT and driving a cool sports car.

    I think it depends. If you spoil your kid year round and they become bratty and expect everything handed to them, it's not good.
    But giving them an extravagant Christmas, and then keep it limited for the rest of the year, it's OK.
    Usually for Christmas my mom lets me ask for one or two big things (Last year it was a 3DS XL with an Animal Crossing game) and then a few smaller things like art supplies and clay.

I like to keep certain plans secret. he main thing is that I'm making sure all their toys are kept in order. I literally want to be that one mom that has all the pieces to a kids game and the box is actually in good condition. Because those items will be getting donated. I get that parents/grandparents want to make their kids happy and want to try to get them what they asked for. but there should be some lessons involved like donating toys to a toy drive like toys for tots so we can teach them that not everyone is fortunate enough to receive gifts. or take them to a homeless shelter to serve food to people so we teach them not everyone is fortunate enough to have food or a roof over their heads. of course you can splurge a little on gifts but there should be some boundaries too. Christmas these days is often commercialized and less focused on the true meaning of the holidays: to spend time with family and friends.

    I don't think there is a right or a wrong as long as children are taught all year long about giving back and that Christmas is more than just getting gifts. Our family has found that Christmas is a lot more fun and a lot less stressful when we spend the season on as much family time as possible and doing something to help those less fortunate than we are. I think it's also important to remember that while kids love getting toys most of those will be forgotten about quickly. Instead of spending so much on the toys maybe think about vacations and family outings that will make life lasting memories. I had it all growing up... When I was younger the HUGE Christmas mornings with more gifts than I could lay eyes on. While this was fun it created too much clutter and I probably had two toys out of dozens that I ended up really playing with. When I got a little older I picked out three smaller gifts I wanted (one from each of my family members) and one from Santa. This was nice too but it still created stress trying to get the presents for everyone in the family to the house and wrapped on time. Last year was my favorite Christmas. Our family had very little money to spend so we received one gift each and a stocking. We made crafts, decorated cookies, sang Christmas songs...it was magical. Make memories, give and love each other. No matter how you do gifts that is what Christmas is about

    Honestly when I have kids, if I do, I'm not getting them a whole bunch for holidays. Kids of all ages grow out of/lose interest in things SO fast. It's not worth spending that much money unless it's on a few things that your kids REALLY need or want and you KNOW they will use! I didn't get much for holidays when I was younger and I truly believe that's part of the reason why I'm so grateful for things I do get to this day.

      Not to mention memories are so much better than material items. I'd take a family trip over a bunch of things I'll forget about in an hour.

    My kids are getting electric tooth brushes for Christmas.
    My usually Christmas items are essential stuff they need. Others will buy them frivolous things.
    I wouldn’t mind someone buying them an iPad, but no one in my family is wealthy enough to spend money like that. They usually get really cheap stuff from their grandma, I have to filter through them to make sure it’s not going to cause them harm.

    I don't get birthday presents, a birthday cake or party, not even birthday wishes, no Christmas presents and not even a stocking yet my two younger brothers get everything. I'm currently 17 and to date have gotten nothing all year. They get IPads and Beats by dre and I'd be grateful to get a sock. I think we can see who their favorite is. I look under the tree with tons of gifts and every year none of them have my name on it. I don't get gifts year round either so basically I pay for myself.

      I think Jesus was a real person yes. Is there something that makes you think he wasn't an actual person? Correct me if I'm wrong but Jesus is not God.

      But....it started as a pagan holiday to combat winter depression. The original holiday was to gather around and fuck each other. It was called the great orgy for a reason.....

    • @DravenUrei
      @DravenUrei Před 7 lety +3

      Actually, Jesus wasn't born in December! The winter's in Jerusalem would have been too cold for poor baby Jesus (or Mary for that matter) to even survive. Most things point to Jesus being born in either the summer or spring times.
