Those compactors aren't made for compacting rip-rap. It works against itself on the big rock. Tracking it in with the excavator is good enough unless you have a big crowfoot roller machine. Live and learn but entertaining for some of us.

Al Buddy, When you gravel a driveway, Start at the street and tailgate it off as you go in. Do not start at the end, you just make a mess and get your trucks stuck in the mud. Also some three inch between the 5-7's and the road mix would have been a better idea. But still you got it in. Good job.

I could go endlessly about how to never buy equipment from Harbor Freight, then to never misuse it by trying to compact 5" rock and then blame quality control when it breaks, but let's focus on the level of construction you are, and will be doing. It is HEAVY DUTY and it is on UNIMPROVED land. You can either consult a knowledgeable, experienced person beforehand, or you can continue to struggle through it, learning expensive things over and over again, which all cost more $$$. The minute you know you're going to need trucks, concrete, materials, etc.... the road is the FIRST thing you put in, not the building pad. Then, you put it in from the main road to the pad, not the pad to the main road. You should grade the road FIRST to even it up and get it down to solid ground, then cover it with geotech fabric so your rock doesn't keep pushing into the mud when it gets wet, and the mud come up through it. Then put down the base rock and grade it, then put down the finer rock, THEN compact it with a proper compactor. Any compactor that can be operated by hand and walking around with it is WAY undersized and totally inadequate. That road is going to be a soft mess during wet seasons that you will have to keep fixing. At this point, don't compound your problems any further, re-think your plans and consult with somebody who has a lot of experience at it, and adjust your plans to make sure you execute them correctly, in the correct order, and only have to do it ONCE, and it's done right the first time. Save yourself a lot of future pain, disappointment, and failures while you still can. You won't regret it. Hate to be so brutally honest, but this is a huge undertaking you're just starting, and it will take it's toll on you if things keep going sideways. And you can count on the fact the weather is NOT going to be your friend, especially when you need it the most.

Thanks for posting this. I was thinking that he is going to loose all that rock into the mud too. I live on a gravel road and our neighbors have a long gravel driveway and every Spring they both have to have more gravel added because the gravel sinks and the heave of winter breaks up the road. I've heard it is much better to put down that fabric to keep it all from sinking. I hope Al reads your comment.

An alternative for vibratory compaction is compression compaction. Breakdowns happen. What I found works well is loading the bucket up on my tractor and then using the front tires to press the ground. You have to get down to reasonable base before building up your road top. The rock you are laying down is fine but in the northern “mud season “ it’s going to squish out and you will find yourself putting down more & more rock which is also fine but tiresome and expensive.

I never want to be harsh on a layman but even those truck drivers who had probably laid more stone on construction sites than Al should had suggested to drag drop the stone to the site in reverse. That would had accomplished several things. Kept footprint small while spreading stone. Keeping heavy truck on rocks and easy exit out. And the heavy trucks that followed with their loads would compact the previous drops saving Al time and gas with less area to plate compact. :)

@@LumnahAcres From what I have been seeing on the forecasts it looks like it Henri is expected to strengthen to a hurricane and head up your way, but then move quickly to the East out to Sea. You will probably get some high winds and lots of rain as it quickly weakens back to a tropical storm and then to a depression and then a Low.
As of Right Now 1:23 PM Saturday August 21, 2021 Tropical Storm Henri looks like it is going to Strengthen to a CAT 1 Hurricane and then make landfall somewhere on Long Island NY sometime on Sunday August 22, 2021 or Early Monday August 23, 2021.
Where I live in Eastern, PA the forecast is for us to get about 1 1/2 to 2" of rain, some areas may see a little more or a little less.
Hope you are prepared for all the rain and wind that is expected. I know the one year we were expecting high winds and heavy rains from remnants from a hurricane, but received very little rain and just got light winds. Go figure. lol
