- In this episode, Noel Salas and friends put the JS "Flame Fish" Groveler surfboard through the paces. He starts out riding his stock 5'2 in some SoCal waves with the Surf n' Show Pivot Twin + Trailer. He thought the speed was legit even with the super flat low rocker and wide tail. Noel also rides the "Flame Fish" at Waco, however, his Surf n' Show Quad set up was actually his favorite. This board goes well in small waves where speed, drive and high-performance turns were no problem. Ian Wooly of Wooly TV rides it as a Thruster and Quad in some head-high and smaller waves in Australia where he thought the "Flame Fish" was awesome. While Asa Cascavilla wasn't convinced this board would go well, watch to see how it changed his mind. "Easy to catch waves, good rail to rail drive with lots of speed. Also, 360s and tail slides were no problem," he said. Find out how this board would work for you with some tips from Noel. Enjoy!

Thanks for having me! 🙏🤙
It was great to see Woolly testing the board in half foot waves. Great review!
that board looks sick. Especially Ian at his size ripping 6" waves, oh sorry, 15cm waves. Ian is legend. Thanks guys for putting this together. I am definitely going to put this board on my list. Cheers
😂cm
That board looked sick everywhere you rode it!
Looks like a super fun board!!!
Super fun little board
Holy moly, what a combo!
Thank you guys, but especially Noel for keeping the quality bar so high with his content.
I’ve a question: can you tell me how this board compares to the FW Sweet Potato? Maybe Ian is better suited to answer this as I know he rode them both, but I’ll gladly take any insight,
Best 🤙🏻
I have the same question ^
Looks like a JS version of the Sweet Potato bro. Would grab it off the rack at a wave pool for sure.
hi Noel, excellent review like usual!! Can i ask you a difficult question? JS Flame fish or Lost PJ? They look pretty similar. Thanks
The PJ is more versatile in the pocket and the FF is faster down the line.
cool review Noel ! are you planning to review JS Xero Fusion as well ?
Not sure yet
Thank god for wave pools.
Do you prefer the flame fish, the gremlin or the white tiger as a groveler? Or would you even think that the rnf 96 grovels as well as the others?
For 1-2’ mushy surf I prefer the White Tiger. One board quiver 96. The Flame Fish and White Tiger offer the most down the line speed due to less overall rocker. The Flame Fish is probably the fastest but the White Tiger draws sharper lines in the pocket.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 I loved the video you did on comparing all the hybrid boards. Would be awesome if you did one on grovelers!
@@alanhart6407 Absolutely
Hi Salas,
thank you for the review. Boards looks great. The outline (but the tail) seems very similar to the MF Little Marley. Have you tried it?
No sorry
@@surfnshowreviews7777 how does the js compare to the puddle jumper?
Hey. Great review. Question is this flame fish or bobby quad and what would your reason be. Cheers for another great review
The BQ has a better wave range… 2-6’ and it offers tighter turns in the pocket due to it having more overall rocker. The BQ makes for a great 1-Board quiver. The FF is better on the smaller mushy wave scale and best in 1-3’ surf. It has more glide and faster get up in go speed down the line. The FF sits in your quiver as a pure Groveler… what it offers in speed and glide in lacks a little in performance because it’s so flat.
Flame Fish vs T Patterson Flying Saucer. Thoughts?
@@MellowMaterials No thoughts… I have never tried a board by Timmy. I did reach out to them and they were not interested in sending boards in for review. Sorry I tried
Appears to be Potato emulated template. Giving a board a name "Fish" without a swallow let alone a twin should be sacrilegious.
I agree with the swallow/fish tail part. Yeah this is kind of a biscuit style groveler. But happy new fish / grovelers can be run with diff fin configurations.
Looks fun, but the firewire mashup looked faster and higher performance in similar waves, in Wooly's mashup vid anyways
I think the FF did surf down to really small waves better than the Mash Up!
@@WoolyTVNice! It does look super fun...as does the sweet potato... I want them all, lol
Hey all, hoping for some advice from the community and others who know more than I do. Thanks in advance!
I’m consider myself a beginner. I’m still progressing my turns but can carve up the face of waves on my 7’2 (54 liter) flatter rocker mid length (shaped like a CI Mid). I’m 5’9”, 170lbs, and 25yrs old. I’m reasonably fit (was on a club swim team and still in the gym). I get to surf about 4-6 times a month in SoCal (from Ventura to Oceanside). Comfortable in head high waves and below.
There’s a lot of good deals near me and someone is selling a 5’10 flame fish at 39.1 liters. Could a competent beginner start learning how to do more critical maneuvers with this? Was told to look at the Lost LazyToy 2 as well. Any other suggestions are appreciated!
PS. I don’t plan on selling my mid, just want to know if it’s time to finally get something smaller or more maneuverable.
I suggest the 6’0” Flame Fish. Keep the volume up and it will surf smaller compared to your Mid. It will feel a bit loose and responsive at first but stick with it and you will start doing sharper turns compared to your Mid.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks so much! I appreciate the help. I’ve gone into some shops and they usually just recommend a bigger hybrid shortboard. Now I’m gonna research what board designs (ie rocker, rail shape, tail shape, and bottom contours) are suited for me atm.
JS flame fish vs. Bobby quad?
Flame Fish is faster and grovels better in 1-2’ mushy surf. BQ offers more performance in the pocket with a better wave range.
Looks the same as the Flaming Pony….anyone know the difference?
Yep they change the last word to keep sales moving along 🤔
With next to no rocker and such wide tail, the FF is giving me the "Chumlee" vibe. There's a guy at my local grovel spot that absolutely rips a chumlee (as a quad), so it can be done. Just make sure the FF isnt your only board.
I surfed the Chumlee in perfect little 1-3’ point break surf and it was super fast. However it would not do a legitimate turn in the pocket without bogging on me.
Funny story… I sold that board on Craig’s List and the guy that bought the board from me asked if I liked it? I said no…. It’s fast but it does NOT like to turn quickly. He laughed and said “are you trying to talk me out of buying this board off you?” I said no…. just being honest. He said “is this board fast down the line and possibly good for boosting airs in little waves?” I said sure… just not good for wraps or tight turns in the pocket. Long story short… he bought the board. I saw the same guy in the water a month or two later and he said “aren’t you the guy that sold me the Chumlee?” I said yes…. He said “that board was horrible” then we laughed and he said “ I should have listened to you.”
@@surfnshowreviews7777 yeah, the guy only takes it out when the waves are very small and slopey...conditions most people wouldn't even bother with. There is no pocket. He does "flat" roundhouse cutties and what looks like "lippers", even when there's no lip (just a bunch of whitewater)...but does it all with style and actually throws buckets. 🤷🏻♂️
