Gravel will rip socks it's why yours ripped. I bought a pair of autosocks just over a year ago. I used them when we vacationed in Colorado in January and they worked great. 6 inches of snow, I could not get out of an inclined driveway without them. I put them on, took less than 5 minutes and I was easily out. Drove through the neighborhood and was easily polwing through 6 inches of snow. I used them in Texas too with the recent snowstorm and again were great. A year later and I still have the same pair and using them almost daily this winter now that I've moved to Colorado. These are not for long trips or to use in direct contact with the road or gravel. I 100% recommend autosocks from my experience using them in snow with some ice.
yea people don't understand that Snow Ropes and Snow Socks are only for those tough spots then take them off right after. Snow chains take to long to take on and off all the time and they can't be used everywhere. Snow ropes/Socks are meant to be coupled with Winter tires and only used as an emergency option for like a few km stretch. For example: when living in vancouver/france where theres no snow. But when driving up a mountain to a ski resort you might have to put them on for the last few km taking like 2min per tire. I've had michelin easy grips for like 3 years but only used them like 8 times when needed. Still in mint condition. Not sure why they're so hard to buy in NA though.
The video explanation is very good. I bought this renhotecic brand Tire chain not long ago. It is easy to install and has a good anti-skid effect. If you have troubles with your car, you can try it.

The snow socks had a much more difficult ice test, on a slope, and I thought you would test the chains on the same icy road, but they chains got a nice flat surface, so I can't really do a proper comparison. Of course my gut feeling is the chains will be far and away better, but this test is not an apples to apples test that used the same icy road for both, this would have made your video more helpful. Still, it was a good video, thank you for your efforts and information!

I've ran the v-bars on a quad and they almost had the traction of my ice racing tires (VERY GOOD) Only problem was I was repairing the front CV shaft (no 4x4) for him and used it to plow. With just me on it the rear spun like crazy, but with weight they hooked up perfect. Scratched the hell out of my sidewalk from spinning though!!
Snow socks are good enough for the average driver trying to get home and the weather turns really bad. Good emergency tool if you don’t have fresh winter tires as most don’t. The chains are best for folks living off gravel roads.
Fabric certainly can't match the performance of metal in this scenario. I've seen rope wrapped around spoked rims with some success but chains still take the win.

I know chains will be superior, but I bought the socks for my Mustang so it won't scratch my wheels. I've been driving in Utah winters most of my life and never been stuck, even in my last mustang. But did get stuck recently when it heavily rained before turning that layer to ice and then snowed on top of it, so I bought the socks. I wouldn't have been in the Mustang that day cause I knew a snow was coming in, but my hoopty winter vehicle broke on me on the way to work that day. Did u try all weather/winter tires before buying the snow socks? My all weather + FWD did pretty well this winter, 9-inches+ snowfall and going up the ski resorts/mountains seemed effortless and safe.

I'm a bit annoyed by this comparison. Apples to oranges in more than one way. You tested the socks on a slope, you tested the chains on a frozen, level pond. You did not compare relative ease of use. Chains will surely have better traction, but when it's early in the morning, cold, snowy, and dark, they're a major pain to install. Maybe convenience and ease of use might make socks worth while. You did not test this. You also did not test either chains or socks in deep, fresh snow. I could go on, but it's pretty clear that your comparison was incomplete. I know chains have superior traction performance, but I want to know in which niche socks may fit. If I have to take my traction device off and put it back on several times in the course of a scheduled route, and that device has serious limits in regards to operational speed, I will look to an easier alternative such as socks. Your video does not address my questions. I don't know how much longer winter lasts where you are, maybe it's a question for next year. I have at least a couple more months. It's snowing now, in fact. Maybe you have some influence: Get me some socks and chains, and I'll test them! No? Worth a shot.

You don't realize it yet but you actually were abusing them. They were not designed to be spun with a heavy foot. It says right on the packaging do not spin the tires or damage may occur.
it is also common sense, if you purposefully spin your tires on ice, you are purposefully breaking your traction and letting gravity decide which way you will start to slide. this guy was either trying to set the socks up for failure as much as possible or he is a damned fool who has zero clue how to drive on ice.

I don't think I would consider socks unless you have low-profile tires, where the chains will damage your wheels. I don't really find cable chains difficult to install. I take along a 12" piece of 2x8 board -- drive up on that to lift the tire out of the slush and make it easier to fit the chain. I do have low profile tires on my AWD sedan, so I am considering a set of socks. I don't expect to actually have to use them, but Caltrans requires you to carry traction devices with you even in R2 conditions (where 4WD and AWD with M/S tires are allowed).

The only thing I was able to find in our tire size that could be delivered in time are the AutoSocks from Amazon. I did cancel my order originally, but couldn't find anything else, so I reordered and they were delivered today. Worst case, I can just return them if I don't open them. If you're curious, our tires are 235/50-18. And it's on an AWD crossover, so I bought 2 pairs of socks.

Not as long as you put the chains on the rear. My Jeep Rubicon has Dana 44's, front and rear, so it doesn't matter where you put the chains. Just know tour vehicle.
You won't break anything because the forces are lower (like, no chain on a wheel). However, you won't be taking advantage of your four wheel drive. Simply put, more traction on every corner means.. well, more traction. Well, that's not quite right. If you have limited slip differentials, and regularly spin one side more than the other, they will wear faster than normal. But who puts their two chains both on the left hand side?
The 'auto socks' I've seen are pure crap. I can imagine a similar design being engineered with appropriate materials might actually be useful in pure snow. The truth is, too many winter drivers will drive over bare asphalt at some point, destroying the fabric,
@Night Hawk Steel chains can most certainly be destroyed in five minutes on dry asphalt. Well, if not destroyed, severely damaged (breaking cross-links). Of course a conscientious driver can make them last. So can an ignorant or uncaring driver break them. I think the same might be said of socks. Know the limitations of your technology and use it appropriately. Of course if you want the new technology to fail, you'll find a way to break it. For what I drive, and where I drive, I think socks could be useful. Obviously chains will perform better overall. That's not necessarily practical. If it were, auto-chains/on-spots would never have been invented. The way I see it, socks bridge the space between on-spots and chains, especially if you need a bit more on the front axle, but not enough to warrant the time lost by installing a steering chain.
Autosocks are only for an icy hill, not to drive a long distance and snow chains destroy the roads and are not comfortable. Nothing like proper winter tires.
I used the socks on my Semi-truck and they do tear if you go too fast. I think they slip more than chains as well. The convenience of less work to apply them is based on the vehicle. 👎
Flawed test, should have tested at same location same grades. but chains will always provide more traction in my opinion. Auto sock is great to keep in my trunk of my car should I get stuck though easier to put on no cold metal.

Put chains on studded tires. Studded tires have less traction than v bar chains. Some say a tenth of traction. But they work fine on the icy hiways.

I put 300# of sand bags in the bed of my pickup during the winter months for traction on my 4X4 pickup
Those socks certainly seem like a "one time" use item. Are they expensive? Did you grt them local at Canadian Tire or Princess Auto?

The 'auto socks' I've seen are pure crap. I can imagine a similar design being engineered with appropriate materials might actually be useful in pure snow. The truth is, too many winter drivers will drive over bare asphalt at some point, destroying the fabric,
Bare asphalt also destroys steel chains.
@Night Hawk Steel chains can most certainly be destroyed in five minutes on dry asphalt. Well, if not destroyed, severely damaged (breaking cross-links).
Of course a conscientious driver can make them last. So can an ignorant or uncaring driver break them.
I think the same might be said of socks. Know the limitations of your technology and use it appropriately.
Of course if you want the new technology to fail, you'll find a way to break it.
For what I drive, and where I drive, I think socks could be useful. Obviously chains will perform better overall. That's not necessarily practical. If it were, auto-chains/on-spots would never have been invented.
The way I see it, socks bridge the space between on-spots and chains, especially if you need a bit more on the front axle, but not enough to warrant the time lost by installing a steering chain.
Autosocks are only for an icy hill, not to drive a long distance and snow chains destroy the roads and are not comfortable. Nothing like proper winter tires.

Autosocks are made for SNOWY ROADS and not for ICY ROADS. Keep that in mind.
AutoSocks need a stud application for ice. To much effort to put chains on.
I used the socks on my Semi-truck and they do tear if you go too fast. I think they slip more than chains as well. The convenience of less work to apply them is based on the vehicle. 👎
Jesus is the only way. There are better options than hell to avoid ice.

Flawed test, should have tested at same location same grades. but chains will always provide more traction in my opinion. Auto sock is great to keep in my trunk of my car should I get stuck though easier to put on no cold metal.
Chains way better. The socks are a gimmick to me.
