I had a good laugh.
For many years at Christmas, I gave my children a shoe box sized gift of hotel soaps etc ( unused of course ) nicely wrapped I gather in extensive travel for work.
When the travel stopped the traditional joke gift was notably absent...to the dismay of my children.

When you said Catalan Christmas tradition I thought you were going to get him a Tio de Nadal, which is a log with a face on it and legs that you give to children leading up to Christmas. Every day they feed it sweets and stuff and then on Christmas day, the parents put sweets and presents around the back end of the log and put a blanket over it. Then the kids sing a song whilst hitting it with sticks. When they finish singing the song they take of the blanket to find out that the log has crapped out Christmas presents for them! Maybe this could be your gift to your father in 2020...?
